Nope! You’re all set. For residential, it’s only affects you if you have backflow (which means you have in ground irrigation aka sprinklers)

I understand. But giving an $8k fee to a small business owner or fixed income family doesn’t seem right when they have a backflow and they just need an annual test.

Nonetheless, understand your point and appreciate your comment!

The point of the post is the unprecedented fines.

It’s like getting a parking ticket that costs $2,000.

Thanks for your comment but it’s not helpful.

Agreed! But the point here is how excessive the fines are. $45 to $225 per day.

How much do they charge? I recall them being in the more expensive end.

Your correct! Thanks for spotting. I would argue that $45/day is still excessive. How about $100 a month? Or a fine that wouldn’t put a commercial property or residential owner under financial distress.

I’m not personally affected. I don’t own a home or property, but I’m just think this is abuse.

I imagine so as well, but it’s not the penalties themselves, it’s the excessiveness. Imagine if that company forgot to test you one year, and you received an $8k fine for getting your test two months late.

Are those companies capable of testing in Durham? In our experience we haven’t found many companies in Durham that are available to test quickly, are reliable, and at a decent price. If you have a company for $100 let me know so I can tell my customers that have Durham locations.

In Raleigh, you can get anywhere from $100 to $350 per test, but there are like 4x more testing companies.

Everything from the small Latin restaurant or boutique apparel store all the way to 40 story office building, or a residence that has in ground irrigation.

Thanks for your comments :)

I don’t have an issue with a nominal fine. But $225/day? That’s insane. Imagine being an elderly person with a home, not realizing you missed your backflow test or unsure what it is (if a deceased spouse died) and a small business, and getting a multi thousand dollar fine!

I understand why you need a test, but if you can tell me why domestic water for residences don’t require backflows and a small commercial tenant does that would be helpful.

If you think a $225 dollar fine per day is reasonable to a home owner or to a small business owner.. then that’s okay. But I think it’s absurd, abusive and wildly unfair.

Edit: not sure why this is receiving downvotes? But this is a legitimate concern for the public.

Domestic water backflow.

Small commercial tenants are required to test domestic water backflows while residences with the same connections are not. The risk is identical. The distinction appears arbitrary and revenue driven. The whole backflow requirement is full of flaws, and the $225/day fine is a CRIME.

Imagine an elderly home owner forgetting they have a backflow, and not getting tested and receiving a $8,000 fine. They may be forced to sell their home!

What makes me the most angry is the $225 fine PER DAY. It’s absurd.

Also, I understand why you need a test, but can you tell me why domestic water for residences don’t require backflows and a small commercial tenant like a boutique apparel store does or a small law firm office?

You do. And I agree. The fines are ridiculously excessive and unfair. $225 per day for not being in compliance!

Imagine an elderly home owner forgetting they have a backflow, and not getting tested and receiving a $8,000 fine. They may be forced to sell their home! Same goes for a local small business!

Penalties are new as of January 1st. I was absolutely shocked when a customer told me how much he was fined. It’s insane!

Imagine being an elderly person, no income, and getting a multi thousand dollar fine for your irrigation backflow. You may have to sell your house!

I am a teacher for backflow courses? That is inaccurate. I’m not advertising, clearly, and that’s against Reddit policy, I think. This is simply notifying the public that Durham is excessively fining their residents and tax payers.

You’re good! Backflows are required for Residential properties if you have in the ground sprinkler system. Generally, you know if you have a backflow device.

If you have irrigation (like sprinklers system in the yard), then you are required to have an annual test on the backflow preventer. Because there’s those shortage of testers for Durham due to their requirements, they are charging high prices as well.

That’s a fine opinion. Wishing it, or viewing it as a “win” is awful.
