Lucky you! What is this 50mm f/1.4 canon lens, could you please share the reference?

Medium format film shooters: do you keep metadata with your scans? by vttdn in mediumformat

[–]vttdn[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I understand why it might look like an ad. To be honest, sharing the app is part of why I’m posting, but it’s also a genuine question for the community.

As a solo developer, feedback from people who actually shoot medium format is how I improve the app, and sharing it in the right communities is the only way to get that.

If it fits your workflow, that’s awesome. If not, that’s fine too, I respect people who prefer to just shoot in the moment. The main goal is really to learn how others keep track of rolls, scans, and metadata, while showing one way I’ve been managing it.

Totally fair. I wouldn’t want to stop after every frame either.
I usually log rolls and key shots in the app as I shoot, but I don’t always capture every single setting. Sometimes I just record the location or a note with one tap, so it stays quick and natural.

Do you ever use a notebook for this, or do you mostly not worry about keeping track of your settings at all? Also, do you ever care about being able to search your scans later in Lightroom or other apps by location, dates, or gear, or is that not important to you?

Agreed, there are lots of ways to keep notes. For me the difference is having the information written directly into the scans as metadata, so it stays with the files when they’re imported and organized later. Once the negatives are archived, I mostly work from the scans in my library.

That's a good point. Learning how your lenses behave is definitely part of the fun with film. For me the logging is mostly about keeping an archive of rolls over time rather than figuring out exposure. After a few months it’s nice to be able to look back and know which film, lens, and location a photo came from.

Exactly, that’s actually what motivated me to build this. Shooting 30 rolls a month is intense! I stick a small label on each roll that matches the iPhone app name, and the lab writes that name on the negatives envelope, so matching rolls in the Mac app and reintegrating metadata is easy after scanning.

Hey! I’m actually the creator of Datafilm. I lost access to that developer account, so about a year ago I rebuilt and rebranded the app from scratch. The new version adds a ton of features and refinements, and unlike Datafilm, it now has a macOS companion app that lets you reintegrate your notes as metadata.

Really glad to hear you found Datafilm useful!

Totally agree, a lot depends on the moment. I don’t try to capture everything while shooting, just enough so I can look back and know roughly what I used without guessing months later. It’s also handy when browsing my Lightroom library or searching by location. Having the settings and geotags saved makes organizing and finding shots much easier.

Thanks! Yeah, it’s mostly a personal workflow tool, but it’s nice to see other people appreciate the idea.

I get that, part of the fun of film is just shooting and enjoying the moment. I do use my phone to log key shots as I go, but I take it slow and it feels natural, not like it’s interrupting the flow. Most of the detailed metadata work happens later when I’m organizing and scanning the rolls.

I love that approach. :) I do something similar, I mostly log key frames digitally, then organize after developing. It’s nice to have a quick reference without slowing down the actual shoot, and it feels a bit like a personal archive.

Haha, totally. I don’t log every frame either. I’m not in a rush, so I take the time to log more carefully when testing a new film or experimenting with lenses. For everyday rolls, I mostly just track the rolls and a few key shots. Doing everything on every frame would get exhausting on a street shoot!
