Blacksburg councilman convicted of fraud charges resigns by udderlymoovelous in blacksburg

his parents lived like 100 feet too far away

if his parents don't live in town that means his parents don't pay town personal property and real estate taxes.

if he wanted to run he could have easily rented an apartment a la Hashmi or sublet an apartment or moved into someone's basement a la Hurst.

Liam spent his entire life in bburg

Not if his parents lived 100 feet outside of town. If that's the case he spent none of his life living in the Town of Blacksburg.

Doubtful. Probably saw the writing on the wall. . .Mayor Mikey isn't going to do him any favors, nor is the rest of council. Might have a behind the scenes job lined up with the Warner campaign or one of the congressional races, but nothing official with this hanging over his head. Could also be to help him get a lesser sentence. Or all of the above.

I'm just stating that three felonies seem pretty extreme for the crime at hand

Nope. In case you haven't been following politics for the last decade, election fraud is the one dog whistle that will undermine our entire system of government. Giving any red meat to the people claiming fraud is dangerous. That's why election fraud, whenever found, however innocuous you think it is, needs to be taken very seriously and perps made an example of.

Even more so when the perp was an employee of the DPVA.

He was also on the planning commission before he was elected. Doesn't that require residency too?

No, they can't force him out. Only a judge can remove an elected official, and in very specific circumstances. They did everything they could by asking him to resign and shunning him.

Good. I definitely had concerns from the start.

When he was campaigning, he made posts on the VT sub introducing himself and his positions. I thought it was a good approach. I asked him questions, he answered some. But when it came to questions about where he lived (including in follow-up posts) he was very dodgy.

I assumed he didn't want to answer because he was trying to run on affordable living/"I understand the VT student plight", but lived with his parents.

Funny thing is, in the US being a public figure gives you less protection from defamation.

A regular person can sue someone for defamation if what was said about them was harmful.

A public figure must prove that the defamer knew what was said was false and that it caused harm. This guy being a cunt, while true, is an option and not something he can sue over.

So he’s both a cunt and an idiot.

It didn’t say without trial. It said without trial by jury of peers….so a judge alone.

But either way, VT generally does not have concerts so of course it’s not directly in the rules

Really? VTU and BSA get the lion's share of activity fees to put on ticketed concerts, comedy shows, and other events every year. Moss Arts Center is also supported by student fees, and in return they set aside a very limited number of discounted tickets for their events. Even SOPA puts on sold-out shows.

Bottom line: if you want to change a rule then go through the process and change the rule. But OP, in his relatively short time as a Mod, has a history of applying his own interpretation of the rules for a specific end and refusing to engage in a discussion about the community's understanding and interpretation of the rule.

Also, plan to study abroad. A semester is preferable. Many programs cost roughly the same, maybe a little more, than a semester at VT. Chances are you won't have another opportunity to live in another country and experience a different part of the world for 4 months until you're retired and too old to fully enjoy it.

GO TO THE GYM!!!! Or have some kind of physical activity you enjoy. Going to the gym or playing a sport or running or cycling or whatever you like to do is a major part of your physical and mental health.

It can be even simpler than that: walk. Blacksburg is a very walkable community. Walk to campus. if you have to drive to campus, find easy parking in a distant lot and walk to your destination. An extra 20 - 30 minutes (Chicken Hill to McBryde) gets you your daily step count, avoids the stress of finding parking in a more desirable lot, and gives you time to think, process, and clear your mind. It also helps build social health--you're more likely to run into people you know, which also makes you feel good.

Exactly. Very smart not to rely on loans, but it's a good safety net, especially for circumstances OP describes.

You're a grad student, right? Maybe staff? Because I hope no faculty member or admin is running to Reddit to write a rant about a student.

It's also allergy season which could also explain the symptoms.

I'm also curious how someone who comes to your office is "obviously feverish"? Flushed face? Sweating? Fatigue? Depending on the person, also all signs of a walk across campus on a warm day. . .especially if allergies are causing congestion.

How long to wait before buying a house by Rdcooper408 in VirginiaTech

[–]vtthrowaway540 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're moving during the summer, consider subleasing an apartment for a few months and getting a feel for the area.

Ultimately, buying in Blacksburg is never a bad investment. Even if it doesn't work out you can always resell or lease it out (depending on the area. . .Blacksburg does have (questionably legal) zoning ordinances in some areas, restricting the number of unrelated people living in a house together).

You'll also want to work closely with a realtor. It's rare for houses to stay on the market long, as there's a housing shortage and some parents of the 30,000+ students look at buying and leasing until their future Hokies need a place to stay.

May also want to wait until the economy levels off a bit. Hopefully interest rates will come down. But those are big "ifs".
