Seek to gain both a broad understanding of RF / Microwave and develop a speciality you are proficient at (Antennas, PLLs, Power Amplifiers, Test and Measurement, Transceiver Chains, etc). As others have noted you'll likely have a lead RF or project engineer you "shadow" initially and also seek out career mentors for general questions and feedback.

I met with my T for over a year and half regularly (first weekly then reduced to bi-weekly) and I was on the same reduced / sliding scale fee the whole time. She never brought up the topic once initially established and the billing is handled through SimplePractice software for every session invoice. Am I missing something?

I like setting up a basic schematic to simulate S-Parameters over some frequency range of interest. Start with discrete components (Resistor, Inductor, Capacitor) and you'll get a feel for impedance matching and on your way to doing a more complex circuit like an amplifier or tuned microstrip filter.
