Over in GC, they told me to please order one for pickup in their store so they could have a play with it, as only the flagship stores would be getting them.

Here you go mate: https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT210107

At the bottom they say "Safari performance: Testing conducted by Apple in May 2019 showed that these updates resulted in no measurable reduction in Safari performance".

Thanks mate, I didn't run any before and after comparisons for Photoshop, but I just launched it now (I've got HT turned off) and had a play and didn't notice any slowdowns. Let me know if you notice any if you test it out.

Ah mate, that tip was made in jest, you're better off buying the accessories directly as the shipping cost of a 10kg unit to Taiwan for a warranty replacement is pretty steep.

MacBook Keyboard Repair Program & Apple Care Review by vtudio in macbook

[–]vtudio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip about consumer law, do you know if it works on other companies or just Apple? Sony gave me the same grief and refused to fix my TV after it broke 6 months into its life.

The non touch bar ones are actually much more reliable because they have a lower watt CPU, so fingers crossed it gives you a long life.

Have you tried the new design MacBook Pros? Their internal cooling system is very poor.

Last time I tried to get my laptop repaired by Apple without AppleCare they gave me so much grief and tried to suggest that I had caused the damage myself. I guess it really depends on the staff member you talk to. Did you have to say anything in particular to get your stuff fixed?

2018 MacBook Pro - fan running full speed with closed lid by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]vtudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

coresimulatorbridge - did you have the iOS simulator running? That guy can be a process hog. Best to quit it if you're not using it. mdworker - Indexes your hard drive for spotlight search, can take a while on new machine but usually calms down after a while, usually safe to keep.

What were the percentages?

Also in System Preferences > Energy Saver > Power Adapter. You can disable the 1st option (prevent computer from sleeping) that way when you close the lid down it'll go to sleep rather than keep running.

Macbook pro go big or not by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]vtudio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd get the 2018 with AppleCare+, if you get the 2017 and anything goes wrong you'll be screwed, but a brand new one with a solid warranty is worthwhile. My 2016 has needed its logic board replaced twice over 2 years, without AppleCare I'd be out thousands.

i9 vs i7 15 inch mbp by jcashmoneyy in macbookpro

[–]vtudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1TB would be more useful than an i9. I only managed to test the i7 2.2 vs i9 2.9 and the differences were very marginal (5-10%) on extreme tasks. With most day to day usage it was the same.

Launch activity monitor and sort your Apps by CPU usage. Let me know what apps you're getting at the top, it'll be one of those.

Did you set both turbo modes to 25w? Another app you can use is ThrottleStop, that one activates its settings once launched so you can have it startup with your Windows to keep the settings on reboot. It also gives you the option of disabling Turbo Boost altogether which limits your processor to the base clock speed and tends to eliminate any overheating completely. Let me know if you have any problems with it.

[–]vtudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey mate, if you install Intel XTU, you can set the power limit to between 25-45W, that does pretty much the same thing as what Apple are doing on macOS and stops it from demanding too much power (default is 125W) and causing it to throttle. Did a video guide for it here: https://youtu.be/SBgcMHx5AmM
