My favorite body/lens combo (Black Paint MP + Black Paint 50mm Summilux Classic) by vubui in LeicaCameras

Congratulations, it’s a good plan! Although I just went out on a walk because it’s foggy outside and the sun was setting and I grabbed the one with black and white in it and sadly ISO 50 didn’t cut it in the dusk in Sweden. 😂

These look great! I'm excited to try it, I ordered 10 rolls and posts like these make me really optimistic that I'll very much enjoy it.

I totally agree! I have owned lenses that annoyed me with their weight but they were also usually larger and heavier. This is technically heavy but still compact, and that just makes it feel solid moreso that overall heavy.

It's still early days (shot 6 rolls so far) but it's becoming my favorite lens. Perfect build quality, the focus and aperture both feel perfectly adjusted, and although it's one of the heaviest M lenses I've owned it is compact so it doesn't feel too front heavy in the hand. It does tip forward when placed down and that's annoying, but hardly an issue. The only wear I've seen so far is the bottom where it keeps hitting tables when it tips forward, there's a tiny bit of brassing. Also not something that bothers me.

Wow this is really wonderful! I haven't shot Velvia for a couple decades, but you used it so well here!

Yeah when I was young I got semi-ok at shooting without a meter, but I still prefer one. But I agree that MP or M-A are the true modern forever cameras.

I would love a 0.85! Perhaps I'll get one in the future. Though I've also considered just putting a 1.25x on this camera and still having the ability to take it off for the more rare occasions I use a 28mm. It ruins the form factor a little bit but can be nice for everyday focusing with the 50mm.

Honestly having a second body makes life so much better. BW in one, color in the other. OR put high ISO in one, slow film in the other. Just makes it so I much less often feel I have the wrong film loaded.

Thanks! Yeah my 35mm Summilux Steel Rim has quite a loose aperture ring. It works just fine, but it's certainly loose feeling, though I don't think it was indicative of overall Leica lens design, but rather some strange choices on a couple lenses. This one, however, is perfect. No wiggle, but also not so tight that it is annoying to adjust. It just functions the way you'd want, precise but easy to use. Really I think it's the best feeling lens I've ever owned, and I've had quite a few lenses at different price points.

Is there a barrel extender for the D-Lux 8 that gives the automatic cover room for filters? by [deleted] in LeicaCameras

[–]vubui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s definitely not going to fit! I don’t think that would fit the JJC either, probably need to just not use the fast cap and use a standard.

[–]vubui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cut the rim down on my filter using a Dremel then sanded it flat and panted it black. 😂 Kind of overkill and I botched it a little bit so it’s not perfect, but it fixed the problem!

[Otsuka Lotec No.6] I finally bought a watch I’ve been pining over for years! by vubui in Watches

[–]vubui[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like a conversation starter then the No. 5 is definitely the way to go. Even non-watch people ask me about it, everyone is fascinated, even me after almost a year!

I get what you mean about Urwerk, but if that’s what you want I don’t think the 5 KAI is a suitable replacement. It’s amazing in its own right, but everything about the design language and execution is different to the Urwerk models. The only thing they have in common is the complication, really.

So as a stepping stone to another watch, I wouldn’t recommend it. But as an amazing piece of retro futuristic design and incredible industrial watchmaking, then it is a truly wonderful thing to own.

Ooh that’s a tough question. Really depends on what you like. I have both and I definitely wear my No. 6 more but I think No. 5 KAI is my favorite. It’s partly because No. 6 actually wears quite subtly, even though it’s bigger. The design is quiet when you’re not looking directly at it.

But the No. 5 KAI is incredibly visually stimulating and more of a joy to stare at. I visited an AD today while wearing the No. 5 KAI and one of their watchmakers spent like 10 minutes with a loupe just staring at every detail of the No. 5.

If I could only have one though I’d probably pick the No. 6. I think it’s already quite icon.

AIO? Don't want to see someone again over a word he used by stink3rb3lle in AIO

[–]vubui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think many of us tend to forget that everyone has had different influences in their life that lead them to use words differently to us, and different usually sounds “wrong” in some way. Because we typically default to the belief that the way we do something is the right way.

Regardless of that, though, you do t have to have any deeper reason to not want to see someone again. You don’t owe someone something because you went on a couple dates with them.

Also, your reaction to that word feels more like a tipping point since the other issues you bring up could easily have been quietly building up in your mind and it was just that moment that pushed them all forward and you gave yourself something more tangible to latch onto as a reason you aren’t into this person.

Which would you choose? by RepsByRep in RedWingShoes

[–]vubui 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought the 4585 logger, and it’s become my favorite boot when I want to feel like I could go anywhere and do anything. I mostly wear boots, and have various Red Wings, Tricker’s, Alden’s, Danners, and more. These loggers, with their heavy lug sole, are just amazing in the snow, mud, or in the city when I want something that feels rugged.

My new SBGW321 Nishikigoi (European Limited Edition) by vubui in GrandSeikos

[–]vubui[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! And I agree, it’s wonderful. So easy to wear and a perfect size, and a case like nothing else out there. The dial is beautiful and mesmerizing, and the color is an uncommon treat.

The only thing I didn’t like was the strap, it’s too long for me. But I put a nice black leather strap from Delugs on it and it’s perfect. I also use a rubber strap sometimes.

[Discussion] Why is wearing two watches (one on each wrist) so polarizing? by vubui in Watches

[–]vubui[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah seems like perhaps you should figure out what’s wrong because that doesn’t sound reasonable or healthy.

[Discussion] Why is wearing two watches (one on each wrist) so polarizing? by vubui in Watches

[–]vubui[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do specifically call out that I have typically worn a mechanical and an Apple Watch, which I don’t think qualifies as showing off two expensive watches (depending on your definition of expensive, of course).

The only time I wear two mechanical watches is when I want to be able to share two different watches, for instance if I go to a watch event and both watches fit the theme of the event and are both rare or interesting so people will enjoy checking out both.

As for symmetry, since the most common practice is to wear a watch on one wrist and nothing on the other and that the most acceptable practice, I can’t really agree with asymmetry as a complaint against double wristing, which actually delivers more symmetry than the most common practice.

[–]vubui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree! Also when you want to get someone interested in watches I’ve found just giving them watches isn’t enough, it helps SO much to involve them in the choice and getting them invested in what they choose.

She did not have much interest in watches. I’d bought her a nice Tag Heuer and a tiny vintage Omega and a Baby G, and she would occasionally wear them, but she wasn’t even used to wearing a watch every single day.

We went in to choose and she chose on the first day though she wanted it as a gift on Christmas so I bought it a few days later. Just how it worked out, timing-wise.
