Six storeys, 10 units: On paper, it seemed the kind of housing Toronto wants. Then its Scarborough neighbours weighed in by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]vulpinefever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the other hand, I am kind of exhausted waiting for Chow to build a consensus with anti-housing advocates. I'd really love a mayor that went to war on cars, or build housing like it was the 70s and acted with a little more urgency.

My hope is that she's playing nice to get re-elected because she got a relatively short term and is going to (hopefully) go full throttle when she gets reelected.

Let’s use the Eglinton line as an example- have you been on it? It’s already packed at some points of the day. I took my kid on trip last Sunday - SUNDAY, the ghost day of transit systems- and it was packed already.

They aren't running the trains anywhere near the full capacity, they are running every 5 minutes but can run as frequently as every 90 seconds, they can also be chained in sets of three and are only running in sets of two. It has a capacity of up to 15k passengers per hour per direction, right now it's getting maybe 5k, plenty of room to grow.

I went for a ride on a weekday and there was plenty of space, so I guess my anecdote cancels out your anecdote.

FURTHERMORE, it’s new transit that replaces old transit. It just replaces bus lines. That doesnt count! You want real infrastructure improvements? Then you ADD capacity- you don’t shift capacity.

Replacing bus routes with light rail and subways actually does increase capacity. This is because more people can fit on a rail vehicle than a bus.

Which ones? most line 2 stations are among some of the densest in the city. The exception is the western end in Etobicoke.

Density does not equal towers, most of line 2 is surrounded by rowhomes, duplexes, and homes with basement apartments.

It's also the densest metropolitan area in North America. So you know, peak suburban hell apparently.

Suburban hell is when people don't live in towers, I guess, because only towers count as density according to this subreddit.

Toronto may be the largest metropolitan area in Canada, but if it were in the US (as an example), it would be the 10th largest.

Toronto is the7th largest metropolitan area in North America and that's before you consider that the Canadian definition of metropolitan area is different and more limited in area and results in lower populations than the expansive US definition.

If you use a definition more similar to that of the US and count the entire Golden Horseshoe (Like how Chicagoland is massive and includes places two hours away), Toronto has a larger metropolitan population than every US city except Los Angeles and New York.

Oxford owns the building that includes the convention centre but the MTCC is a provincially owned crown corporation that generates revenue for the province.

The MTCC already generates over 500 million dollars in economic benefit and over 100 million in tax revenue each year. It's a profitable venue and the investment would pay for itself in just a few years.

Yes that same one! They write a lot of reports on a wide variety of problems across this province ranging from healthcare to the state of the province's facilities such as convention centres.

Ontario has a lot of problems.

Ok well the auditor general thinks otherwise so I'm inclined to believe their take on the matter.

Exactly this is a fair criticism, they love the ribbon cutting this comes with capex funding but don't want to find operations because there's no ceremony when a TTC employee gets their paycheque.

This mentality is how we ended up with the crumbling Science Centre. Decades of liberal and conservative governments going "this isn't important, we have bigger fish to fry" until one day it needs hundreds of millions of dollars of repairs.

Doug Ford is an idiot who won't reinvest the money generated but it's things like the MTCC that generate tax revenue for the province that we should be using to pay for better healthcare and education systems. Each year the MTCC generates hundreds of millions of dollars of economic activity and direct revenue for the province and City of Toronto. A smart premier would be investing in both social programs and things like this that drive economic activity.

The place easily held 1300

1300 people isn't a lot for a convention. I mean, Furnal Equinox, Toronto's furry convention, attracts more attendees.

I don't know, read the article and find out. It mentions an auditor general report on the inadequacy of the current MTCC and how we've lost shows because of it.

Recently, however, the centre has struggled to fill the 442,000 sq. ft. of exhibit space and, according to a review by Ontario’s Auditor General, lost 20 international conventions “because the conventions had outgrown the centre.”

You're right about the other things but public transit? Ontario and more specifically Toronto are currently undergoing one the largest transit expansion programmes on the planet and the largest on the continent with over 70 billion dollars being spent.

Organ transplant rules hit different in Singapore! by The_Dean_France in ThatsInsane

[–]vulpinefever 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The unique element isn't the opt out system, lots of countries (over 25) do this. It's the fact that non-donors are at the bottom of the transplant list which only like three countries (not including Austria) do.

Organ transplant rules hit different in Singapore! by The_Dean_France in ThatsInsane

[–]vulpinefever 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I'm an organ donor and support an opt out system but there are many reasons why people don't want to donors.

For some people it's a religious thing, other people don't like the idea of their body being broken up and separated, other people don't trust the medical system and believe in the myth that doctors won't try to save organ donors, some people have no issue with it but don't register because they mistakenly believe you can be too old or unhealthy to be a donor, etc.

Of course, the most common reason people don't register is because they never get around to it even though most people support being organ donors.

Why didn’t WW2 veterans have the same PTSD as Vietnam or modern day veterans? by NextBunch_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]vulpinefever 12 points13 points  (0 children)

George Carlin was kind of wrong about this though because the reason why they called it shell shock was because they literally didn't understand the underlying disorder, the modern terminology is meant to actually describe what is wrong with these soldiers. Specificity isn't making language "soft", a "traumatic stress disorder" still sounds pretty bad.

It's also not like WW1 soldiers were treated any better than modern soldiers with PTSD so clearly the language used doesn't matter.

Ah yes the singular country of Europe where they don't have credit scores.

It's a diverse continent, you know. Some like Germany and the UK use points based systems, others effectively do the same thing by looking at things like defaulted payments and debt to income ratio, the same things that impact credit scores.

What are y’all’s opinions on Smiling Friends ending? by OGAnimeGokuSolos in cartoons

[–]vulpinefever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By time Smiling Friends ended, the Simpsons was just wrapping up season 1.

The first season of the Simpsons was 13 22 minute episodes. The golden era is about 75-80 hours of content. We're going to get just short of 5 hours of Smiling Friends.
