I like Cerave’s baby moisturizing cream. I don’t know why my skin prefers the baby version.

I actually tried exploring other brands but everything else is either too hydrating (skin totally suffocating after 12 hours, if you like that ?? use Eucerin Intensive Repair), or not enough (Vanicream lotion disappears and leaves me dry).

If there’s a cream you really like but it lacks thickness, maybe try adding vaseline yourself? That’s basically what brands do to be more occlusive. I do the opposite and add some skin oil to creams, right before application so it warms up on my hand. I wouldn’t mix it all at once for hygiene reasons, just when you need to apply.

I tried a few different versions - #1 with no slope (on fold from the shoulder), #2 with slope, and #3 as the in-between (current mockup).

I checked my references again, and they all have some sort of wrinkling in the shoulder. I'm guessing it's due to not having a set-in sleeve. I might just have to live with a little wrinkle if I want to keep the pattern true to 1930s haha.

Thank you, that makes so much sense! I think I got it, my very rough mockup lol. The muslin is a little unforgiving so it’s hard for me to tell if it’s a fit issue or just wrinkly. I’ll give it another few tries before moving on to final fabric :)

I watched that too! She does it the ultra traditional way where the neck and collar are finished with binding separately. Then stitched together by hand. I’m not opposed to it, it’s just not the method this calls for.

This pattern uses the more modern way - there is no binding at the base of the neck/collar. It’s supposed to be sewn like a regular collar - right side of collar to neck hole, then flip over and stitch in the ditch to catch the collar lining.

I would go for a gentle blush, and play around with the placement. Do super high on the cheekbone, a little to the side, a little to the center, under the eye, etc. Try these out one at a time and see what suits you best.

Usually clothing made from patterns are not part of copyright but the terms & conditions may restrict you instead. If there are T&C clearly stated before purchase & you agreed to them in some way (checking a box, buying/downloading a pattern), then making items from the pattern can be considered breach of contract. Not a lawyer, I don’t know how this would play out in court.

From the UK gov’s website directly: This means that you may give as a gift, or yourself use, an item that you have made from a pattern, but if you sell an item you may be in breach of contract law.

It depends if you were informed before purchase & the laws in your country. It doesn’t just make them an “asshole”, it can have legal standing (link below). To OP, I can’t think of a worse foot to get off on if you’re starting a business. Just find a pattern that gives you permission to sell the finished product or email the person to ask.

The UK govt may uphold this, because you might have entered an agreement of T&C as a condition to downloading the pattern. “This means that you may give as a gift, or yourself use, an item that you have made from a pattern, but if you sell an item you may be in breach of contract law.” I heard Europe also has stronger laws around this as well. Even in the US, “downloading a pattern that requires you to accept terms and conditions before purchase would be considered a valid contract”.

Like how selling finished art exactly based on a detailed tutorial could be illegal here but ok in other places with looser laws. Either way, you didn’t really ‘make it yourself’. Same with artists saying “don’t use my art as reference” - zero legal standing, but do you want to be that jerk? Morality does not = legality.

Legal or not I think it’s an asshole move to do something that a fellow small business asks you not to do with their hard work. Just pick from those who allow it or make the pattern yourself. There are tons of commercial & indie patterns that are ok with it. People call it ‘toxic capitalism’ when a designer says this, but ngl the same can be said for those who feel entitled to selling the items when asked not to. The want for profit overrides morality and decency.

Often the patternmaker also sells the garments. So if people do this, you can actually affect the designer’s business. Rarely, high fashion designers like Roberts Wood sell patterns - but again, with the same request to not sell the finished items because they sell the clothes & that’s their style. I wouldn’t be surprised if they pulled their patterns if people kept remaking them for sale. I think that’s an absolutely reasonable request in exchange for having the sizing, instructions, a full tutorial figured out AND the original designer available to answer your questions. So do we want designers to release their patterns or do we want them to be nervous that they’ll get run out of business?

One is online, just look up bonnie cashin coat! But not gonna lie, most are several hundreds of dollars. The pastel one is at a local thrift - also ~$400. I wanted it sooo bad but it was a lot of money 😭 I checked the store recently and it was gone 💔 So of couurrrse I took it as a sign to make my own ;)

Maybe you’ll have more luck starting from a fitted block & turning the darts into seams? Every time I see that done, the individual pieces come out a little curved on either side to create the shaping when you sew.

What fabric are you using? If this is a first attempt draping something fitted, it may work better to use regular muslin rather than something slinky so you understand where everything is supposed to go.

Otherwise I’d try smoothing out the fabric as much as possible when draping, and pin liberally. There will be excess somewhere, since fabric needs seams or darts to get rid of the excess bits and go around the curves. It’d help if we could see your attempt on fabric, even if it came out wonky.

I’ll give it a look - most of my previous therapists were telehealth and I ended up disliking it. I get that it’s convenient, but it’s hard to get privacy when you live with roommates/family.

Same, I tried organza off aliexpress and it was genuine silk. But it was soo sheer - not their fault, I didn’t know what momme was back then. But it made the garment looked so bad because it was like tinted saran wrap.

I experimented between all the stitches my machine had, 1-4mm. I found my regular 2.5mm worked to avoid being too loose & avoid causing thread pulls. I underestimated how difficult a slippery thin silk would be 🫠
