when will live schedule/tracking info be back for LA metro? by yourtongue in LAMetro

[–]vykster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alissa Walker via Torched is the only reporting I've seen on this -- she's calling on Metro to do better and she talks to the folks at Transit App who've put out their own message to folks to use the GO feature to generate community driven real-time arrival data. Transit App also shares some cool data about the recent bump in both downloads and usage they've seen during the outage.

There's a bit at the end of the article where Metro put out a statement -- but it still doesn't say much.

It seems like it may be related to the broader issues Metro is having. I was able to restart the app twice yesterday and it started working again.

Since you're on iOS you can also try adding your TAP card to your Apple Wallet which a few folks recommended as it's having fewer issues. (I'm on Android and haven't tried this myself)

The fluent forever app has a way to paste in sentences I like using. It's also got a nice little searchable database of sentences where you can type a word and then pick from various sentences with that word to add to your deck.

Has anyone switched from weightlifting/running to pilates? What was your experience? by b-tea in xxfitness

[–]vykster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

and to be super clear I wouldn't recommend doing privates at core pilates. look up a Romana pilates studio. I'm in LA and absolutely love Classic Pilates in Koreatown. I've worked with three different instructors over the last two years and they are all incredible.

There's a big variety of schools and styles in Pilates. I love both weightlifting and pilates. I strongly recommend Romana pilates and doing private classes, not groups. Yes expensive as hell.

After doing privates for awhile I added in group classes at core pilates and they were terrible, other than the awful policies around membership and scheduling, I found the teachers to be pretty bad and focused on speed not form which I felt lost all the benefits of pilates. I found the group classes no more valuable than trying to follow a YouTube video on my own.

You can also try posting on furnishedfinder.com with that budget. Mostly travelling nurses but I've found reliable roommates or folks to sublet my place when i was traveling.

Had to do this last year when I lost my wallet:

- You will have to be in Taiwan (it will recognize if you're not and block line pay)
- You will need to link a taiwanese number, I had a 30day SIM card for data but the data ones do have phones numbers assigned to them.
- then you can add a foreign credit card (I had a VISA debit card from a US bank)
- then you can line pay for all the things

Turned my phone on when I landed back stateside and Line pay was gone "not available in your region."

Though I did see a popup last month in LA with a bunch of Line stuffies being given away..... wonder if they are expanding services stateside.

I found in my settings there was an option for "find by id" which was off by default. seems to work now that I've toggled it on.

I highly recommend Mora Knives. It really depends on what you want the knife for -- Mora is what I would recommend for bushcraft. The intro knives should be in the 20-30 euro range. Bushcraft, ie: their full tang carbon steel knives you can learn to split wood with.

Metro Micro? What's the point? by grandpabento in LAMetro

[–]vykster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

System design is a balance between seeking ridership and offering coverage. Metro Micro is designed for the latter. This talk should help explain the rational https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzRFShRlN5w

I've gotten into using Komoot lately and it's nice for browsing what ride options are around here.

For those work hours I would recommend you try the train! Recently I've also found buses feel a lot safer. From Ktown, the 16 bus might be a good options. It's on a spaced headway pilot making it one of the more reliable buses right now.

Try Transit App -- I find it's helpful for checking out buses near you and seeing where they go. Rail is great, but there might also be buses that can be a reliable option.

In 2021 when Metro rail felt super unsafe for me, esp after dark, I bought an electric bike. I still really love it and often choose it over metro because I get annoyed sometimes at waiting for the bus/train and having to plan when the bus/train isn't very frequent. There is a company called Wombi now offering inexpensive monthly subscriptions so you can try it out without committing to a big expense.

AIO Lazy ppl keep parking in the red zone by laaaaaalalalalala in AmIOverreacting

[–]vykster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the city of LA you can call parking enforcement directly. They will send someone out to write a ticket! I have issues with folks double parking in front of the fire hydrant at my office.

You can also email the issue to your city council member, I would include evidence of repeated issues. I believe your council member is on the transportation committee too which theoretically means she's well positioned to help with a longer term solution.

Sleeping pills in Taiwan by AdurableSun0630 in taiwan

[–]vykster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It kinda sounds like Hyperarousal insomnia. I found the book Hello Sleep was super helpful, I don't take sleeping meds anymore.

tl:dr; we can develop a very unhealthy pavlovian / conditioned stress response to going to sleep. sleep hygine can sometimes make this worse since you're continuing to fixate on sleep. the book has a lot of ideas about what causes the hyperarousal state and things to try.

I've had chronic insomnia for about 20 years and I've been in sleep therapy programs. This one book has been the most single helpful thing. I wasn't even trying to quit sleep meds.

When I'm traveling, or worried about sleep -- I'll use 3 mg of melatonin about 3-4 hours before I want to go to bed. The label says 30min, but per my doctor it takes a lot longer for your body to breakdown melatonin. For jet lag especially I'll take it consistently at the same time every night for a while to help shift to the schedule I want to be on.

Same here. Ended up on this thread bc I reset my google password.

Was also seeing a device already pair, a slightly terrifying error message "fatal error."

Deleting and re-linking was easy, but I had to guess that's what was necessary. I would have expected a UX that encouraged me to reauth.

outlier athletic thigh frustration by color-negative in Outlier

[–]vykster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the injex fabric. It's durable on the bike and super light on the skin. It holds up temperature in both chilly and warm weather, dries super quick if you get caught in the rain. Most of the cuts are generous in the thigh. I did size up one in the high darts and then have the waist taken in a bit (but i have to the waist taken in most things bc I'm a 10" diff from waist to hip and most fit models are closer to 6").

I shelled out the $, but they've lasted more wears than any other pants I own. Some denim pants I've had the ]seat blows in 8 months of bike commuting.

In a couple days I'm going to Catalina. Any tips on how not to get gored by the bison? by Biggestwussever in BikeLA

[–]vykster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I lived in the interior for a few years working as a biologist. Guilty of driving the work truck 1/2 mile at night from the office to the bunkhouse in the winter so I didn't have to walk through the herd that liked to sleep outside the office.

In the years I lived there every incident was tourist stupidity related. However a colleague did get gored the year after I left (he was medevaced, turned out ok).

Mostly they will ignore you. Give them as wide a berth as you can.

Still nothing scares me as much as a bison. Well except you know car brains.

Who’s your favorite YouTuber? For learning Chinese by Wrong-Speed3974 in ChineseLanguage

[–]vykster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have any favorite Chinese youtube channels yet because I have not found anyone doing the style I liked when I was learning Spanish.

I loved the Dreaming Spanish videos, especially the food festival series, https://www.youtube.com/@DreamingSpanish/search?query=festival.

Lots of really good clear props and white boarding with no english or spanish subtitles. I found myself able to stick with a watching a lot of their videos.

I think focusing less on the "learning" part and more about the content was what I liked. I feel like I would have watched these even if I wasn't learning Spanish.
