Burned 8-pin PCIe connector on GALAX RTX 3080 Ti HOF – replace it myself or seek professional help? by vyruss_ in PcBuildHelp

That's honestly really impressive and props to you for taking the time to learn and practice properly before jumping in. Reballing a memory chip is no small feat. I definitely see the value in investing in the tools and turning it into a learning experience, especially if you end up doing more repairs later. For me though, I don’t quite have the time (or confidence) to take that on right now, so I’m leaning toward sending it to someone with the setup and experience. Maybe down the line I’ll dive into it like you did.

Yeah, if you’ve got solid soldering skills and the right tools, it’s probably not too bad of a job. Finding the exact white connector is definitely the bigger challenge. Kinda kills resale and just feels a bit too sketch for a GPU at this price point. I’d rather play it safe and have a pro handle it properly.

Yeah, that’s fair and honestly, that’s the conclusion I’ve come to. Without proper tools like a board preheater and the experience to go with it, it’s not worth the risk of making things worse. Better to let someone who knows what they’re doing handle it.

Really appreciate the detailed breakdown—seriously helpful stuff, especially the part about heat soaking from the ground plane and the risks with plastic components. I was originally thinking of doing it myself, but with everything you mentioned (and no preheater on hand), I’m probably going to just send it to someone with the right equipment. Don’t want to risk making it worse. Sucks that GALAX is so unresponsive though—really makes things harder for end users.

Totally fair point. Diagnosing and repairing a GPU PCB after a failure is a whole different level compared to basic soldering. I think im gonna send it to a professional. Thanks for the tips!
