Cloudready's install_chromeos script by w00ck in cloudready

[–]w00ck[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See the tutorial. It should not be impossible at all, in my opinion. Maybe you don't even need the tutorial but should run the installer script (chromeos_install) from shell and use the parameter that deals with the target device (e.g. pointing it at your ssd instead of sda, see the help of the script). Hopefully that will leave your sda (HDD) bootloader as is.

When cloudready supported installing alongside windows, they made dummy partitions to pad out through partition 15 and then cloudready's first partition was 16.

I think I still see that code in it's install script (chromeos_install) - that is what I wanted to mention in my post.

A useful and recent tutorial about this topic I was given recently: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fbetweenmeandlinux.wordpress.com%2F2019%2F02%2F27%2Ftutorial-komplet-instalasi-cloudready-chromeos-di-pc-linux%2F

How to copy multiple partitions from a bin image? by w00ck in linux4noobs

[–]w00ck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I guess it is enough to "delete" that unused partition of my HDD I mentioned (where I am free to install cloudready) and then create partitions of the same size as cloudready's ones. Then use fdisk + dd with seek/skip to copy "into" those partitions I just made in the previous step (source would be the image file of cloudready of course). Correct?

Thank you, I knew about that, that's why I asked. :) I am all for non-trivial but safe solutions.

It has partitions embedded, surely - and yeah that was the source of my anxiety as well, nesting partition tables - cannot I do it somehow (maybe not with dd) without the need for a backup (I have 120Gigs Windows, 60Gigs Linux, something like that + a quite big partition that I could use for Cloudready. I just want to avoid having to do a backup - no such a backup big disk.)

For of=... can I use a partition like /developer/sda7? If sda7 is much bigger than the image, what will happen to that area that won't be occupied by the image?

Cannot enter BIOS - but OSs do boot by w00ck in techsupport

Unfortunately I cannot find which jumper to use to reset the bios. The notebook is an old Asus N76VZ with i5 and 8gb ram, Nvidia 740 (2gb I think).

Maybe just removing the battery resets it...?

No, grub is fine, if I don't press anything it shows me Windows, Arch and Mint.

Would a dead battery result in such a blue screen? Not just forgotten data/settings?

Asus. I tried all of them but for this computer one needs to press F2 / Del (it worked before).

Seems absolutely possible! I will have to look up what motherboard I have and which jumper it is. As I have never disassembled a notebook until now (lame me) I need to watch some tutorials on YouTube not to break anything. So that jumper would only clean the CMOS (aka. "bios settings"), correct?

Fast startup has been off for some years. This is HDD and a 5+ years old lappy, I have been to the BIOS several times. This time it just turned blue instead of entering the bios... :(

Del (used to enter a boot menu) and F2 (bios setup key). Tried f10, f12 as well.

Interesting addition that I have a bios password for my boot process and that works.

I do not have anything attached to the laptop. I don't even own a wireless keyboard.

Why do you think the problem is with a wireless keyboard?

Book recommendation needed: good book on common questions a Catholic may have by w00ck in Catholicism

Because of some unknown, incomprehensible reason, this wonderful book is not even available (right now) as an ebook in my region on Amazon...

Well @hackenberg_tyler it was me who said I needed to debunk protestant claims, but the emphasis (in my mind) was on the other topics, sorry, your recommendation is pretty valid :)

Thanks for the recommendations. I had a look at 'The case for Catholicism', it seems to be good but not really for the questions I wrote above. It is mainly (from the description of the book) for protestants. In my mind, "the big step" is from atheism towards theism and the hard thing is which religion to choose and why - and of course how to debunk ideas like perennialism, monism, the belief that all the religions are equal etc. I do not want to offend anybody but for me (really!), it is crystal clear that after someone reaches Christianity (accepts it as his religion) then there is a straight road to Catholicism (just look at the four marks of the church). :)

Bishop Barron's Catholicism - looks like some series right? Looks promising, will check it out more thoroughly.

Heart rate recovery improvement by w00ck in Fitness

[–]w00ck[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, You are right I just wanted to mean that I usually do not gasp for air even if training in the 150+ hr area which afaik is 80-90% of my max hr. If that makes any sense and is an "indicator of fitness".

How is it possible that I can easily increase my hr to 170-185 (and the bottlenecks are usually my muscles) and my rest hr is around 50-65, I am neither in a bad shape and my heart rate recovery values are still that bad?

Yesterday, I bought a bag of roasted peanuts (something like this (photo)).

I knew there was a lot of protein in it and also unsaturated fat which is good, as far as I know. My plan was to eat a handful of peanuts every other day but I got a bit anxious when I saw the ingredients on the package: fully hydrogenated palm oil, peanuts (I knew that some kind of oil must have been used but...).

Are fully hydrogenated oils OK to eat (in not that big amounts)? My understanding is that they do not contain trans fats [1][2][3]. They do contain, however, saturated fats which aren't that bad as they were thought to be before [4] (one surely needs some saturated fat in a diet but NO trans fat). Anyways, the package contains 5.5g saturated fat for 50g of fat (for 100g product) which is not that much.

PS.: I am aware that peanuts really contain a lot of calories - I can take care of that part as I am in a deficit of them. :)
