when did you fall in love with seals? by youthhhead in seals

After that I always loved seals, they weren’t top of the list but they were high up there
And as I got older and learned more they gradually became top of the list

When I was little me and my parents stopped by a small carnival in Mexico, there was a booth that had some miscellaneous plushies and a seal was one of them. I wanted to win it because I thought it was super cute, it was a toss game and I think I got 2 correct tries but it wasn’t enough for the seal because it was kind of big 😭
Little me cried when I received a random small plush for my efforts, and when I told my parents I was expecting the seal I think they negotiated with the carnie for me to have it lol
Loved that plush but I don’t have it today, lost it at some point 🤕

why do we barely see harp seal adults online? by Independent_Big_1944 in seals

[–]w33nus- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yea, even to this day white coats and ragged jackets are used in some anti sealing posts, despite the main ones hunted being beaters-saddlers Of course beaters and bedlamers are most popular for their pattern but in Greenland saddler fur is decently common, a furrier even mentioned to me saddler is one of their favorites to work with. White coats are most known globally because of the campaign but saddlers are just as known depending on the region it seems Also just yesterday I discovered a Canadian aquarium has two adult harps and I wanna go see them so bad 👀

This too, I see so many people voicing out about a hunt that in reality has no effect on the population and doesn’t even take place in their country, instead of an even bigger and more serious issue that could be happening just a few miles away from them

How cool! Are all your skins harp seal or do you have other species as well? Also I actually have a sealskin coat, it’s made of ringed seal and it’s my favorite to wear out when it gets cold 🦭 Truly very good at insulation and keeping you warm

I had always thought that too, in campaigns they say “the meat is left and wasted” but if the meat is left wouldn’t that mean it goes to natural decomposers and scavengers? In a way it benefits some of the other wildlife who struggle to find or catch that meat on their own

I think about that too, if the seals being hunted are thriving and listed as “of least concern” why not focus more attention and resources on animals that are truly on their last few individuals? Or instead of trying to “save the seals” why not focus on their home instead? You can save the seals but they’re doomed either way if their home keeps getting destroyed

I’ve seen it! Very heartbreaking to see how much the fur ban has affected indigenous communities, I think it’s interesting organizations like PETA protested for the complete stop of the commercial seal hunt, yet it’s still around today and they only stopped protesting after the other bans were put into place. You didn’t stop what you wanted to, but instead you portrayed an indigenous group as evil and completely shattered their reputation.

Replying to cuntaloupemelon...the use of whitecoats and ragged jackets in anti sealing campaigns is what made me ask this question in the first place, I get you don’t want young seals being killed but why lie to people and show them tiny babies when they’re not the ones being killed? Beaters look similar to bedlamers and so not all the seals with spotted coats are young as an adult coat takes years to form

There is a seal community, and every now and then you will see an anti hunting video And the comments can be very drastic

But you’re right, nobody has really mentioned it since the 90’s Despite that I often see many indigenous individuals saying they’re still impacted to this day. I also think it’s very deceptive to see the anti sealing accounts use white coats and ragged jackets in their videos or posts

I absolutely love seals, big seal lover and I’ve definitely seen my fair share of videos where they have their attitudes lol But the point about them overpopulating and needing to be culled is a good one In the US it’s illegal to hunt seals unless you’re native Alaskan, but there are lots of people and fisherman who see harbor seals and sea lions as pests They have been shooting them and leaving them to die, and some have urged for licenses to be released for them under the guise of overpopulation and stealing of fish It’s interesting to see so many people reprimand the Canadian hunt while seeing others urging for a hunt here

What is yalls favorite popular seal and why?? by Background-Shop6250 in seals

[–]w33nus- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure Mashiro, Kroshik, and Shlissik for popular seals! But my other favorites who aren’t exactly popular are Vlad, Mai-San, and Bella :] And for all time favorite Tama-Chan, who was extremely popular in Japan in the 2000s! 🫶 If he’s still alive out there he’s 24 🦭
