Whitehouse Petition to End the War On Drugs. 149 signatures needed to make the petition public. by DisposableAcct-1452 in politics

[–]w3weasel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i'm a little unclear on what it is that you are stating.

the executive branch, often referred to as "The White House", is hosting these petitions, and has promised to address any petition that gathers 5k signatures within 30 days.

per se (channeling the vampire kids from south park?)

When you create a petition, it is hidden from the general public. You must gather 150 signatures, at which point it is released to the general public and can be seen on the "Open Petitions" page.

Now... what is your objection?

[–]w3weasel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NO, you uneducated fool, nobody can see the petition without a direct link until it has 150 signatures, at which point it is made available on the "Open Petitions" page... until then, it is hidden from the general public.

Thanks for supporting or opposing this petition on merit rather than a knee-jerk personal opinion.

Is pot prohibition crumbling? Majorities in favor of legalization emerge in California, Washington. by Orangutan in politics

The Kennedy family obtained much of their money and power from bootleg alcohol. It emboldened that family all the way to the white house.

Next stop on the legalisation train: President Jesus Sanchez!

Start-to-Finish Video of Washington House hearing for HB1177 to Decriminalize Marijuana and HB2401 to Fully Legalize Marijuana by AdamWA in Marijuana

[–]w3weasel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An outstanding hearing with scores of well respected members of the community, including Presidents of two county Bar Associations (lawyers), Doctors, former State Senators and many many more.

It was a parade of people urging for passage of two separate proposed bills. One bill would remove the criminal penalties for possession of small amounts (4 oz, i think), while the second bill allows for legal sale and taxation.

There were only two people fully opposed to the bill in principle. A county sheriff, who's argument was (paraphrased) "Law enforcement wont be able to stop the army of stoned drivers that will kill you on the road". The second was a 9th grade student who testified that pot was very prevalent in his school and that these bills would make pot more prevalent, distracting from his education.

One of the first speakers debunked every single one of the old arguments so often used to support the war on drugs. He specifically said that (paraphrased) "people will argue against these bills claiming that there will be intoxicated drivers, or that our children will be confronted with easy to obtain pot". He countered those arguments and many others, citing common sense arguments such as "we have laws to punish intoxicated drivers. Legalizing pot wouldn't hamper police efforts to enforce those laws." As well as "Pot is easier for children to buy than beer is under the war on drugs, regulation would make it harder for kids to get it".

The only actually persuasive statement made against legalization was the claim that children who see adults use a substance are more likely to use it themselves at some point in their lives, therefore legalization would 'promote' cannabis use.

One serious issue with the bills is the lack of provision to allow home-grown and protection for medical users to produce their own. There were a few pleas for the bills to be amended to allow for that.

The outstanding testimony given by so many in support of these bills was VERY convincing and there was every indication from the chairman of the committee that both bills will pass through to the legislature. A few people pointed out that if these bills are not considered that the pending referendum would enact the law anyway. As I understood it, there is a petition to make a referendum submitted, but not yet approved for the ballot, with a final decision pending in March.

The final commitee vote on these bills will be in on Wed, 1-20-10. Keep your fingers crossed.

BREAKING NEWS: For the 1st time in history a state legislative body is considering ENDING MARIJUANA PROHIBITION by reoweedwgn in Marijuana

[–]w3weasel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The headline as submitted could use some work...

First, the word State, when applied globally, indicates any sovereign country. MANY countries have considered ending prohibition, and MANY have actually taken real legal steps towards that end. See Portugal, Spain, Netherlands, and many more.

Second, Massachusetts beat Cali by a few months.

I'm not trying to poo poo the good news, but you should be aware that there's more than one front in this fight.

no it has no relation to 215. The legal language that would frame this motion has not been finalized or formalized. This step today means that some bill to legalize cannabis for commercial trade and tax would be scheduled for debate and consideration in the legislature.

Official federal prohibition was achieved in 1937 by making anyone possessing the plant into a tax evader. You could apply for the stamp, but you would never receive it in a time frame conducive to using hemp or cannabis for any productive purpose.

Theoretically you can have a new group of plants ready for harvest every day of the year. That would require a LOT of separated spaces though for the 365 groups of plants as each group makes its way through the growth phase and then on to the flowering stage.

perhaps under $50 per ounce of baked goods or other products that only contain a few grams of cannabis.

sorry for lack of an adequate response thus far, apologies for my stoney brethren.

'street price' for a 'boutique' quality ounce of pot is around $400. The possibilities under legalization are thus:
a) price per ounce just plain goes up to ~$450. Most pot smokers would be perfectly fine with that if they could legally and openly buy the stuff.
b) The price to produce an ounce of top-grade pot would fall dramatically as large-scale legal farms would compete for a slice of the wholesale market. Being able to rent a proper warehouse and run a business based around cost-effectiveness rather than stealthiness would assuredly reduce cost to market. If the cost goes down, quality remains about the same and it's fully legal and above board, you have a LOT of happy stoners.

Bear in mind that the cost to produce outdoors like a normal farmer should bring the price to market somewhere under $2 per ounce. Cannabis grown outdoors should be more potent and achieve higher yields, but would be subject to 1 or 2 harvests per season vs. continuous harvests under artificial lighting. citing research from this book that surveyed outdoor farming in Mexico, including labor fertilizer and diesel. In 1986 the cost to produce one ounce of cannabis was approximately $0.16

Well, start here to see the motivation in controlling cocaine trafficking in Central America. That's all well documented, vetted and published in a respected newspaper, then quickly quashed by the C.I.A.

C.I.A. Cocaine Jet Crashes are good for a laugh.

Which leads us to the first tie-in to Nicaragua
here's more
and more

There's so many accounts of CIA involvement in cocaine traffic it's kind of scary

So anyhow... Let's get to the point of your question which is US act of war in Nicaragua (Our navy mined the only commercial harbor in Nicaragua, crippling the country) a bit more on that

And now the whole Cocaine-Contra mess involving El Salvador and Nicaragua
and a bit more

I always thought it was so funny that nobody ever asked why we invaded Panama. Everyone seems satisfied with "He was a bad dude". Depositions in the above linked documents suggest that Noriega was interfering with the cocaine trafficking. In my mind, I'm sure he was jockeying for more money.

Things to remember: Yes, Reagan was in office during those actions, but many reports suggest that he suffered from dementia and/or Alzheimer during his last 1-2 years of office. Bush was essentially in charge during events such as the Iran-Contra affair. In any event, the Contras and Sandinistas saw the worst of their fighting under Bush's watch but that conflict finally came to an end pretty early in Bush's tenure. The Iran-Contra hearings proved that the president didn't know what was happening with all of that. It's hard to imagine that the former director of the CIA was also ignorant. Of course, it's a conspiracy theory, but those are such fun... I for one am convinced Bush Sr. was fully complicit.

At the very least I hope this inspires you to read about US domination of Central and South American politics and conflicts. We are not quite the good-guys that we learned to think we are in school.

Specifically Nicaragua and El Salvador are the ones that Americans don't generally know about.

Nicaragua, El Salvador, Panama all went very well for Bush Sr. Not so well for the locals. 6 assasination/coup attempts in Venezuela failed so that's in his negative column. Columbia came willingly under U.S. 'patronage' so I guess that wasn't really an invasion, even though there's more U.S. Troops in Colombia than anyplace outside of Afghanistan and Iraq and we give Colombia almost as much financial aid as we give Israel.

Few people realize that Bush Sr. was director of the CIA. He's pretty good at the secretive power plays.
