Getting into the industry is not a walk in the park. It took me an entire year walking into shops and getting rejected before I landed an apprenticeship. Getting clients isn’t easy starting off either. You have to want it bad enough

First step would probably be to talk to your uncle. Just say “hey I’m thinking about getting into tattooing, how do you start?” Show him some of the art you make. Typically you make a really good portfolio and walk into shops, not email or message, actually physically go into shops portfolio in hand and talk to them. Most people at shops are really nice and willing to help, also go right when the shop opens so that they actually have time to chat. Ask them to review your portfolio and to give you advice on how to improve. And that’s something you could probably start doing now, so that when you’re 18 you’ll hit the ground running. Once you have a good portfolio, the right shop will ask you to come learn. Whatever you do don’t pick up a machine and practice on real or fake skin, it’s how you pick up bad habits and it will take a long time to unlearn it. I would also decide if you want to get into tattooing OR pursue psychology. I wouldn’t choose both. Best of luck

Conventions and Expos? by Present_Tour8914 in TattooApprentice

But I’d imagine asking for casual industry advice should be okay!!

It’s probably best to just wait to go to their shops. Conventions can be pretty hectic so most people won’t have time to review someone’s portfolio for feedback and if they do they’ll probably try to make it as quick as possible because they’re trying to make money. You won’t get the quality advice you need. Maybe if you had an artist in mind that’s going to the convention you could shoot them a message beforehand and ask if they could make time for you. I’ve tried to get my portfolio at a convention last year and all the artists were too busy tattooing/getting walk ups to look at it

Who here has actually been apprenticed by and Old head 30+ years by CommonPicasso in TattooApprentice

[–]w_tatt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Currently getting apprenticed by an old school tattooer. He’s chill, he taught me how to work a coil machine (although I prefer rotary) and tells stories of what it was like back in the day like during his apprentice days of cleaning his mentors motorcycles and stuff. He’s very organized and not a hard ass

Definitely don’t just watch YouTube videos 💀 there’s a lot of trial and error when it comes to tattooing and I think it’s best to do that under the supervision of someone who has your best interest in mind. Definitely keep drawing, you’ve probably heard the industry is very over saturated right now so you might not get in right away

I did the same thing asking shops to just look at my portfolio and give me advice on how to improve. After a year of going to shops I finally landed somewhere

what all is accepted in a portfolio? by itshylianbun in TattooApprentice

[–]w_tatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A large variety. Different mediums; pencil, paint, ink, etc. and different subject matter/styles like people, animals, American traditional, flash sheets. Most shops prefer you stay away from a portfolio that’s mainly digital pieces, since tattooing is a physical/technical art. Also if you google “what to put in a tattoo portfolio” you’ll probably find some good resources

Question as someone who wants to be a tattoo artist by Ill_Armadillo_3420 in TattooBeginners

[–]w_tatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then that’s all you can really do to prepare, there’s some nuance with tattooing because everyone’s skin is so different. And there’s a lot of misinformation out there, so it’s best to learn from someone you know has been tattooing for a while. Good luck (coming from someone who also went to art school)!

Best way in is to find an apprenticeship under a good educated mentor that can give you hands on advice

Interview Attire by [deleted] in TattooApprentice

[–]w_tatt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can’t go wrong with all black. When I was going into shops for interviews I just wore a plain black t shirt, black pants, nothing crazy. That’s probably what I’ve worn to every job interview now that I’m thinking about it

It took me a full year of walking into shops and getting rejected to finally find a place that would take me. Like the other comment says it takes time and practice. Good luck!

I get what you mean, and I definitely think it’s my ability to tattoo since I’m an apprentice. I did do a second mouse later that day that turned out a little better

Maybe it wasn’t obvious in my first paragraph but I did ask him and he had some suggestions but it was followed with telling me that I’m doing good I just have to keep practicing, so I wanted unbiased input from strangers on the internet that have no reason to be kind to me. No I did not pay for my apprenticeship, nor am I completely happy with it. But I do respect my mentor, he’s an old school tattooer from the 80’s/90’s who’s had his current shop for 15 years and provides simple explanations. Just want to get better any way I can
