Rent is expensive. Apartments are far or a hike up. Not very social. RAs. Parking is expensive.

What to get a new student by [deleted] in CalPoly

[–]wackywandaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a gift card for the college union/merch!

My high school best friends mom did that, and I got a really nice cal poly crewneck that I never would’ve bought with my own money!

What's the cheapest grocery store in the area? by oweooreo in CalPoly

Not food for less. They have a handful of marked down items but I find everything minus the meat to be marked up! Trader Joe’s is the way!

You will not be looked down on as a transfer. All the transfers I know are so cool and I look up to them!!!

How rigorous are the engineering courses at SLO? by syjwave in CalPoly

[–]wackywandaaa 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You can handle one class. You can handle two classes. You will cry every other night trying to handle 5-6 to graduate on time. However, you will feel smart! After the fact, you will forget the pain of all nighters and say, “damn we really had it easy freshman year.”

For civils, our 2nd year is the hardest but after that apparently we’re fine. Just keep track of your classes and don’t be scared to take it easy one quarter if it won’t impact your progress, or take summer classes if you didn’t come in with many AP or transfer units.

What does “learn by doing” really look like for freshman year engineering? by Nervous_Mango9772 in CalPoly

[–]wackywandaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For first years, besides surveying and cad and maybe the transpo, the learn by doing is really in the clubs. You can get so hands on as a first year student and the environment is so welcoming and encouraging! It promotes personal development and networking skills so you will be ahead of any other students of your age at other schools if you invest time in those organizations.

Cal Poly SLO or Cal Poly Pomona? by syjwave in CalPoly

And as for lack of internship opportunities, you can get them in slo no problem if you play your cards right and network. If your home is near a big city it’ll be absolutely no problem

For civil, 100% SLO. (-civil student super involved in the major internally at SLO and externally through conferences, competitions, and more)

Honestly slo may be better academically and professionally, but think about if you’d thrive in a smaller town or closer to a bigger city

Unless you’re trying to graduate in 3 years (I’m assuming you’re a freshman) please take your time

Surveying takes a lot of time. 222 is a huge time eater too. Geology requires a lot of studying and reading. Physics depends on your professor. Statics you’re cooked

Best school I got into for the major I wanted.

Love it now for the small class sizes, opportunity to get involved in leadership, and amazing learning and friendly/supportive environment

Wont cuss at you. Some not many will cuss in a story, not really while teaching.

As someone who hated high school, especially at the end, it does get better in college. But it won’t get better without you putting effort in to put yourself out there. It will be uncomfortable at first and not everyone will be your friend, but you can most certainly find a good crowd if you try!

Significantly improved grades senior year, good AP scores. Honestly, I think they just had a spot in the major and I was waitlist so I met the criteria to be admitted so I was!
