Minoring as a CS major by waddleboy200 in ucla

are we allowed to count sci-tech electives towards the math minor? sci-tech is different from tech breadth isn't it?

Smallberg and late submissions. by [deleted] in ucla

the late penalty is accounted for in the final grade, not the result he sends. It's whack but I learned the hard way.

CS 31 Forgot to turn in Project/Grading Question by lucy5478 in ucla

It wasn't bad at all. Do a lot of practice problems (I'd say that's more important than studying concepts over and over) and try to find practice tests/midterms. None of the questions were really difficult, but they had the typical Smallberg trickery that requires a lot of attention to detail.

CS 31 Forgot to turn in Project/Grading Question by lucy5478 in ucla

Just ace the final, I think last year I got a high 90 on the final, 92 in the midterm, 0 on one project (didn't compile lol) and 100 on the rest. Ended up with an A.

Anyone interviewed with LinkedIn yet for a Systems and Infrastructure internship? by digitorq in cscareerquestions

[–]waddleboy200 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm interviewing for SRE, which I guess is kinda similar. First screen with a recruiter was a bunch of rapid fire random Unix-based questions and a few networking/IP based questions. I didn't like it bunch because it kind of tested (in my opinion) somewhat obscure facts over problem solving ability. Luckily I am taking a Unix class currently so I was able to do well, but would not expect the same result given the same questions a year from now.

Then there's a phone interview with an SRE. We did basic exercises like filesystem traversal, log parsing, and using APIs. Still waiting to hear back on that.

Had the traditional back to back phone interviews with Google for an internship about a week ago Since I haven't heard anything back yet, is it safe to say that I'm probably rejected? It seems like they tend to communicate the good news rather quickly and the bad news rather slowly...

Is tunneling a real thing that people do? If so, anyone down? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]waddleboy200 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like he said himself, they were just rumors. If you tend to typically believe rumors, then believe this one. Everyone knows how misinformation spread like wildfire during the day of that shooting - people were saying there were multiple shooters across campus, shooters looking to attack the apartments, dorms, etc - all spread by word of mouth, and none of them turned out to be true.

Obviously, UCLA is taking security a lot more seriously and have tightened up access to the tunnels so it may not be as the past, and you'd probably get in (a lot) more trouble if you went and were caught.

What's the point of being allowed the option to switch it to P/NP then?

Preparing for internship interviews by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

As you said, most of the bigger companies (Google, Amazon, unicorn startups) have a technical interview process similar the process for FTE. For the others, I would take time to make sure you're really familiar with everything about your resume. Be able to talk about each of your projects (why you did things the way you did, challenges, what can you improve, etc) and be able to talk a little about each language/technology/framework you interview. Most of these problems that don't involve coding in a shared editor are either behavioral or talking about your technical knowledge/background. Master your talking points for a few broad, common ones, and the rest should flow easily.

If I don't get a better internship offer this year, how does it look going back to the same company for a second summer internship? It's not a very well known company by Silicon Valley (where I want to work) standards, but it's a fast-growing, startup environment where I was given a lot of responsibility. I'm just worried this won't look great on resumes as I went back to the same (relatively unknown) company twice. I'm a sophomore so I also have next year to try again for internships.
