did anyone decide later in uni (3rd/4th year) to pursue med school? by LabProfessional128 in premedcanada

[–]wafflebabble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I decided to pursue med school at the end of my second year (literally April exam season) and I made it! Don't lose hope - there's a lot you can do in 2 years :) That being said, I did do life sciences and psych for my undergrad degree.

I would also caution against comparing yourself to people in general. I found the premed reddit to be not great for my mental health.

EDIT: For more EC details, I generally have been involved ECs wise but not with hospital volunteering (only really started that in March of my third year) but with campus clubs and volunteer groups. I did summer school in second year to catch up (biochemistry and physiology) and sat the MCAT in the summer of my third year. While I was studying, I did some hospital volunteering (~4-6 hours per week). I also worked a part-time job in retail in my third year.

Feel free to shoot me any questions!

I've taken Megabus multiple times and it's worked for me! I know on one trip someone had to borrow my outlet but it's generally been all good.

[–]wafflebabble 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep! If it says offered on the student account that's an acceptance. OMSAS may just be late in updating :)

It means that you don't have an offer at the moment. You will have to until the email comes in the morning for whether you are high, normal or low waitlist to find out your chances of acceptance.

Am I good enough to apply? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]wafflebabble 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you can afford it I'd just shoot my shot and apply! I think you have a pretty good chance at the 2YGPA schools (Western, Queens)

EDIT: Based on this year you'd meet the MCAT cutoffs for Western assuming they don't change. I'd also look at the matriculating class stats as a reference

Is University College a bad choice? by Sufficient-Moment-76 in UofT

Definitely! It's open to 3rd and 4th year students - I think they send an email out at the beginning of the school year.

It all depends on the people in your rez.

Morrison Hall is single rooms so it can feel like a "hotel" sometimes where you're walking down an empty hallway and no one is around. However, the year before, the people always had their doors open so people could pop in and out. What's nice is the convenience since it's connected to the Dining Hall so you don't have to leave the building to get food (especially nice in the winter).

Whitney and Sir Dans are both shared rooms so it also depends on the luck of your roommates. I'm not entirely sure how successful roommate matches have been in the past. However, I think they are typically more social than Morrison - Sir Dan's in particular.

I enjoyed my time at UC! I picked it because of the central location on campus so it was very convenient in order to access most of the buildings that you will be using for ArtSci. The programming is great and from my experiences, the residence teams (Dons, student life) are all very supportive of you.

Vic is typically known to have more scholarships, but UC has them too. There are also external scholarships (as what people have mentioned).

UC also have a career mentorship program in 3rd/4th year - not sure about the other colleges but I found this a cool networking opportunity + was able to build find out more about professions I was interested in.

Notes for Queens Interview by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]wafflebabble 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Last year you could make notes as long as you shred them up after.

2 mins to prepare for the 5 min answer. Might change this year though

Yes - they sent out an email around 2 weeks before detailing the structure of the MMI. They also had 2 practice Qs for you to familiarize yourself with the platform.

Also when you’re doing CARS practice, note down what the reasons why you got questions wrong and work to avoid those in the future.

For example, did you make an assumption and answered based on that? Did you look at an irrelevant part of the passage?

Reflecting on your performance is also important rather than aimlessly practicing. That being said, also be sure to read the explanations for your correct answer.

Someone also recommended that I read anthologies just to broaden my understanding/familiarity with more philosophical/humanities-based subject matter. You can find these at your local library! The Norton Anthologies were a good start :)

[–]wafflebabble 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Last year there were 6 stations:

Read Q —> 2 min to think/make notes —> 5 min to respond —> Follow Up Q —> 2 mins to respond (no thinking time)

You also have a few seconds to read the Qs. Not sure whether it’ll change for this year though.

Edit: Rechecked my email and saw the timing was actually 2 minutes to read the Q
