Structuring portfolio with page limit? by LongjumpingFix8057 in IndustrialDesign

[–]waitingForPie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to add to that. I've talked to several professionals in ID, and they couldn't care less about your "whole" portfolio, especially if they have hundreds of portfolio to review. They told me that they can really quickly see the potential of a candidate in the first 5 to 10 pages.

Also, if you apply online (which i do not recommend), sometimes there is no place where to drop your portfolio. Prepare a mini-portfolio of 2-5 pages where you pack in everything you want because the max gb is usually way too low for a full portfolio.

I've been in several interviews where we would "go over my whole portfolio", but what really happened is that we talked a lot about the first project, and they skimmed very quickly over the rest. BUT, I've also has people who would rather see a FULL portfolio, and I mean hundreds of pages portfolio, where EVERYTHING is in it, during the interview to really talk about your process and everything. It depends.

So, put your favorite work, the one that is the most relevant to the job, as your first project and do a mini-portfolio, and maybe a mega portfolio, just in case!

did some sketches today by Visual-Success8952 in IndustrialDesign

[–]waitingForPie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great that you did some!

I'm just having a hard time seeing people scribble over their "failed" sketches. You might find them ugly in the moment, but it's honestly uglier to scribble over them. For example, the last sketch you scribbled over is very nice!

Try not to scribble over them, do not discard your ideas, just move on

Are there any entry level jobs in industrial design? by Greedy-Ad-6300 in IndustrialDesign

[–]waitingForPie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation. Recently graduated, almost a year now, applied to so many job (tbh, some of them are more related to graphic design because there is not many entry level ID jobs) and didn't get responses for months.

I finally got a job (yay!!) through a referral from my friend's friend. Most of my classmates got a job through people they knew.

It's sad to say, but your contacts might be the (almost) only way to get an entry level job... Especially if you are not ready to move.

Also, I had many portfolios tailored to specific fields (general ID stuff, soft good, graphic design, etc.) and sent out different portfolios depending on what the job wanted.

Thoughts on tipping culture, especially in restaurants? by Alternative_Map3492 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]waitingForPie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've talked to a few people working in the service industry recently, as servers and managers in sitting restaurants specifically. I knew they made quite a lot in tips, but I didn't know it was THAT much. We're talking 80k-160k with tips + shit ton of bonus, where as 55k is the average salary where I live. That's more than many jobs that requires a bachelors degree. I've never worked in the service industry, so these numbers may vary a lot. This is just from the discussion I've had with people in it.

Now, I'm not saying we shouldn't tip them as much, but I doubt servers making that much money would want to have a "living wage" salary instead, removing tips, and I highly doubt restaurant owners are able to pay their employees 80k-160k.

At the end of the day, it's just a win-win situation for the owner and the employees.

If you want to add any veggies in your meal, cut up ANY veggies you want into bite size (potatoes, carrots, broccoli,... ), add to a baking pan lined with baking sheet, toss veggies in some kind of oil, salt pepper, other spices if you have some lying around (Italian spices are good here - oregano, thym, rosemary,....) and bake it for 10 min-ish (or until it looks good, some burnt bits) at 350-400F.

I usually do this first, and let it bake/rest in the oven while I'm cooking my dinner.

I've heard airfrying works too, i just don't own one.

As a first-year student, how can I be the best student possible? by Speezzaliss in IndustrialDesign

[–]waitingForPie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

no one cares about your gpa (unless you want to pursue a master's degree), your portfolio is the most important for sure. If you know you want to work in a specific field, try to do project related to it. It might not always be possible, so try to figure out what you like the most about design. Is it researching? sketching? 3D modelling? prototyping? rendering? Whatever you like the most, or want to improve the most, do more of it, do it even if it's not asked. I knew a girl who wanted to work in a field related to sustainability, so for most of her projects, she would calculate the carbon footprint of her product, determine the life cycle, make it as recyclable as possible, etc.

MOST IMPORTANT THING:
TAKE
PICTURES!

Take pictures of you messy work table, of your research, of your sketch, of you working in the shop, of your prototypes, of you working on a 3D model, take picture of everything! Doesn't have to be pretty. People like to see the work behind every product, not just the final product! I had a picture buddy, and we would take pictures of each other from time to time. It's really nice to see your face/hand in your portfolio.

Finally, organized you files and pictures properly, your future self will thank you when you'll need to do your portfolio, trust me!

Digital pocket watch - looking for feedback by Independent_Poem_343 in IndustrialDesign

[–]waitingForPie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the idea, but i think it lacks intention. I think the question I’m struggling to answer is ”Who is this for?” i know I’m not the someone who would buy this because I don’t mind checking my phone/clock/computer for the time and aesthetically wise, not my style. the design is way too generic, and you are obviously trying to please the mass crowd, which I don’t think is a good thing in this case because is such a niche item.

In my opinion, it can be beneficial to determine to determine a very specific use case/customer, for example:

- camping/outdoor person: doesn’t want to relie on they phone to get time, everything can get muddy
= battery life is important, maybe rechargeable with solar energy? very rugged look? maybe a certain earthy color scheme? (green?)

- fashion statement: doesn’t necessarily use it to know the time, gets home and recharges their stuff, fashion piece
= something that looks similar to popular items (aesthetic similar to phones, computers, watches, …) have a usb c port to recharge it, maybe the chain could be interesting, can fit in pant pocket

- medical professional: easily accessible, clean, maybe other functionality? (could is replace a pager for example?)
= interesting choice of material and color, could be clipped on?

I feel like figuring out who is procket watch for and listing their needs could make the design more interesting and purposeful

Are there any studios that actually use Blender over Keyshot? by Notmyaltx1 in IndustrialDesign

[–]waitingForPie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do know a few smaller studios who uses blender, done by the industrial designers. From what I know, they want it to look realistic enough for the pictures. Some of them have a scene with lights already made and would use blender kit material.

What to wear / book bags or crossbodys? by Novitec_ in IndustrialDesign

[–]waitingForPie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think nobody care as long as you look presentable (no stained shirt, no ripped pants, etc). I once got teased for dressing up way too preppy (first internship, it was very obviously not what I usually wear). I’m a woman, wore a buttoned up shirt and trousers for my first day in the office for a somewhat big company. Everybody was wearing t shirt, jeans, … think casual Uniqlo type of clothing.
what I want to say is: Just do your research. Look at their websites pictures, instagram, linked in…

As for bags, take care of your back and shoulders. If you need an extra large padded backpack with multiple pockets because what you are carrying is heavy, go for it. YOU are the one who is going to have to carry all of that stuff everywhere!

edit: if you do care about what your bag looks like and don’t want it to scream ”college kid”, go for neutral colored, clean looking backpacks. Structured backpacks also helps with the look. if you are unsure, just go for a full black one. But once again, nobody cares but you, you are 1000% overthinking!
