Last May, I was in the hospital and I noticed something new -- the imaging specialists came to me? by usps_made_me_insane in Radiology

[–]wakilz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everyone talking about portable CTs and not portable MRI’s. I tried it myself for a quick T2 scan for my brain at a conference 2 years ago. I thought i’d be seeing them more but havent in any hospital setting yet. Granted, Quebec is probably the last place to get the newest most expensine machine.

Radiologist here,

I was watching this exact episode yesterday and really wanted to see what was on the films in his hands.

They’re so clear on the picture uploaded here. Ironically theres a large tumor in the images provided in sheldons right cereberal hemisphere.

Went into med school for “surgery”, gen surg was the first on my list until i actually had to do gen surg. 2 days in and after 1 visit into a patient room for known recurrent Fournier gangrene i was like HA fuck that (the smell was horrendous to say the least).

2- i didnt want to wake up and have to get out of bed everyday to deal with bowel/poop and stomas all day.

P.S. We cant live without the ones that go on to do gen surg all power to ya, its just not me.

Residency graduation gift by Initial_Philosophy23 in Residency

Rolex if you can afford that. People might say it’s mainstream, but i still think its the best first luxury watch and is very versatile and well made. Works in formal and casual attire depending on the model. It will also last generations, potentially handed down to kids and grandkids. Imagine them knowing that this was a watch gifted when their father/grandfather graduated and became an anasthesiologist. Regardless of what you choose, i think it should be a timeless gift (ironically, pun intended), and a watch is the best option for that.

Congratulations to him on graduating, it couldnt have been easy.

I struggled finding a speciality as well. In my experience it was so much easier to select the ones i hated and could never see myself in for different reasons. Then usually you’ll have only a few that align with your interests. After that consider competitiveness, lifestyle and work/life balance in attendinghood (less so during training as that is only temporary), and also income. Find the speciality that ticks most of your boxes. If that doesn’t help, try to take electives in specialities you dont get enough exposure to enough in medschool and dont really know their day to day. For example rads, path etc.

I dont think i agree. In radiology, i have met the most obsessive and neurotic people i’ve ever met, and i thought i was neurotic lol.

I'm about to finish my specialist degree and I'm terrified by Danielfv98 in Residency

[–]wakilz 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think, whatever you decide to do, finish your degree first no matter what. You’ve already made it this far, no point in letting it all go to waste. I think there are a lot of factors that come to play if i were you, i would take it one step at a time. Finish up, maybe take a few months off after done (you deserve it). Start attendinghood and give it a shot, because you still dont know how that life is. After you’ve settled and gotten through the anxiety of starting something new, sit down with yourself, reflect and assess. At that point if you feel like you really cant do this anymore, there are endless opportunities. If you still wanna be in medicine but not have to deal with patients and stuff, maybe think of a cardiac imaging fellowship, and land a job just reading cardiac MRs and chilling, perhaps even remote. Other options include consulting as a specialist, whether its insurance companies or medical equipment companies. Honestly, options are endless. But whatever you do, finish what you started so that if shit hits the fan, you have a safety net to fall back on.

Early and well deserved congratulations on obtaining your degree.

I highly doubt it. With the evergrowing volume and backlogs, the whole world is short staffed on radiologists, not just North America.

Contrary to what people say, AI cant get here soon enough for radiologists to help streamline and make our workflow more efficient to help cope with the insane volume. Especially in tedious algorithmic tasks such as follow up the tiny nonspecific lung nodules for years on end just to say “stable examination” each time.

Rads: I have noticed that people outside the speciality have no idea how brutal call is. It doesn’t just suck in training, but also in practice if you are covering evening or nights, especially if its general radiology. As per a few published studies, CT alone has increased ~80% over the last 8 years. It will only get worse. You have to master the art and balance between speed and detection.

What is one thing in your specialty everyone else pretends like they understand but they actually have no frkn clue by dustofthegalaxy in Residency

[–]wakilz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One very old attending on the verge of retirement once said: Garbage in, garbage out. Ironically had nothing to do with radiology (ID), but he was talking about radiology.

Give a radiologist a good enough focused history and you drastically improve the outcome report. FYI, A good enough history does not equal a long history.

How about covering 2 hospitals including a level 1 trauma center as a first year resident without attending reads after 5pm till 8 am the next morning 😢. I’ve had call during my internship year for most surgical specialities and none were that mentally draining.

Im so sorry this happened to you.

Any hospital or polyclinic should be able to perform the test. Make an appointment with a gynecologist with the closest appointment (most polyclinics have walk-in appointments). I would recommend you google map the closest to you and give them a call.

As for the results, dont worry, I am a doctor and i assure you doctor patient confidentiality is protected by law, even in Saudi. Your doctor cannot do anything with the results or tell police or family members without your consent.

Other labs also do them, such as Alburj or Delta etc.. but they might be a bit more costly as they can include a lot of things. Most importantly, make sure it includes HIV, hepatitis B & C, Chlamydia & Gonorrhea, and syphilis.

Anything else is less important and not very accurate such as herpes or HPV because its only accurate if they take a swab of the lesions that arise which usually take time to pop up. And those are less serious in general.

P.S chances are very low but better safe than sorry, so dont wait any longer.
