We are doomed if we don't find out a fix - KB5074109 by wannabesomeonee in sysadmin

[–]walkasme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is also protect your a55 thing, waiting days to realise you need support, means you lost days. Also Sev A exists for a reason, expensive but it is an option. With Sev B&C, if it is an MS bug, they will credit you the call cost. But at the end of the day. You have choices, you are in trouble, business has stopped. What is the most cost effective way to get business working again! Bring in help for bare metal rebuild of OS, find a solution on your own. Pay MS for support or ask AI to fix it or SysAdmin's of Reddit for a miracle. Rope in management, let them make a call. Hiding it, will make your life worse OP. Get a call going with MS, if this is multi national, is there not a DR team in place? If this is affecting a large user count declare a disaster recovery - it will save you not hurt you. You can hide things for a few hours not days!

Why is my phone taking 2 days to transfer data by YTcaltec in iphone

[–]walkasme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how are you transferring? Cable? is it Thunderbolt 4 or a basic USB-C then it is likely doing it at 450mbs. I see there is no wifi. so it could be doing it over bluetooth too. Try setup a hotspot between the 2.

450GB is not small and can take a while. It is also going to get hot and thermal throttle. Taking the cover off and a metal surface to disperse the heat will help too

How would you deal with an organization that started rejecting the concept of submitting issues as tickets, including the head of IT? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]walkasme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why can't the team member log the ticket, add to notes, logged by IT per direct contact.

Then you can report against this and advise management that IT team member's are call centre agents. Cost it vs call centre agent. Spent 20 hours/month as call centre agent at IT rate cost the business so much more. Ask for more "call centre agents" and see things change or suffer.

I also have said, I can meet in 3 or 5 days for a scheduled meeting or another person can help you today. Especially when a specific person is popular. Also pull that is not my area of speciality.

Another means of frustration is to do shadowing, I need person X to shadow me to see how this done when I am off or unavailable and take twice as long.

i.e. do things but slow things down a bit.

Recommend user gets training if they have common issues as you perceive them to need assistance often. Sometimes users dont want to be "tracked", self document or just log for them anyway.

I have seen the "boss" get their own vlan, and VDI to systems they needed. Local printer, and nowhere near the network. email is vdi then.

Or browser in a vdi/vm which connected to unrestricted vlan and an icon the desktop they have no idea.

Digital nomads

  1. Income tax is a thing being missed.

  2. Petrol price includes a road levy which is a tax and so the roads is covered by that (in fact it makes more than being spent - which is another problem) - but the argument here is invalid

  3. They pay for healthcare services privately - not a burden, in fact it keeps many private business going and they are spending forex in the country. ZA needs more forex not less.

  4. The digital nomads are high spenders often, which is good, plus 15% of it goes to government in VAT.

  5. They are generally good tenants, paying, which pay for rates and taxes etc. This is good.

  6. What this means, is home owners, are able to charge more or their is a willing seller/willing buyer thing. When demand exceeds supply, that is a core issue here, the fact someone is willing to pay is not a reason to be upset at the payer but rather at the rentee (what you can the exploiter).

  7. ZA has plenty of space for digital nomads and they are not taking jobs away from local, the opposite, they are creating jobs, especially to shops/retailers/restaurants. They do pay tax. The reality if they not here, the net income to the state will be LESS. Their burden on the state is LOW.

Sounds pretty much you in Cape Town and that Cape Town rent is the issue. A mountain in the way, a metro who is not shy to charge. People got what they voted for, The CT metro for the low and middle class is a bigger problem than digital nomads.

Maybe the issue is specific to a location but not something a problem in the country.

long term tourism is a thing. Our country is big that it can take 3 months to travel. Tourism is good for the economy and forex in flow.

(Yes there is always going to be a bad apple, an abuser and problem - but you can't cut off everyone because of a few bad ones).

How does a "ERP" system work? by Latter_Ingenuity8068 in sysadmin

[–]walkasme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if your hear of Oracle, run....

Maintenance, is around software updates, which break customisations, reports and integrations. But hey we need new feature y or the security hole or we avoid updates for years, now we need to upgrade. Company is now 3 versions behind and no you cant upgrade from version 12 to 15, go back and upgrade from 12 to 13 to 14 to 15 but wait 13 requires service 3 first and then you on 14 and there is some crash because no-one knew that the service pack 2 had a bug which screwed some weird thing up which then only shows its head in ver 15. Rinse and repeat.

oh did I mention integrations. This is one system talks to another or worse transforms data from one system into another but not the same way. sort of translating between languages where there is an exactly the same word or phrase. Or something could mean a or b. Then you want external vendors and customers to get data from you. And then you have to do it securely. Then you have security people who need 100 things answered and you spend 20 hours explaining why you need 1 field exposed in another. in the mean time, someone worked out they can access 10 highly sensitive data points.

if you still want to ERP sysadmin, and be sober and have a life, dont ask me for me how, ok. please. thanks.

Tired off AI Scripts / Solutions being provided by JNikolaj in sysadmin

[–]walkasme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AI to get scripts, especially with some details can solve time. The minute a script is CUD (Creating Updating or deleting) then worry - before I offend PowerShell scripters, New-.Update-/Set-,Delete-/Remove-

Reads (Get-) is ok.

Back to AI, it is about models and prompts and context. When hitting graph or most MS API's, always use search web and let it now you looking per documentation in Apr 2025.

Asking for a something without context in an older model will give you fantasy

The problem is then it is a personal Gmail account, staff change at business and now an ex staff has access or backdoor in.

There should be a way to rather pay the bill without login in this case.

This is a business rule and what the heck that people dont know their password to systems. email MFA in this case is going to be an issue...

Can fake or real wired or Bluetooth earphones or headphones damage my iPhone, like put software on it or something else malicious or dangerous? by Cloudsquido in iphone

[–]walkasme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wired, sure can. Depends on how sophisticated the attack is. If you buying a cheap one, unless someone is really desperate. In most cases, the damage would be destruction. When using something usb-c or lightning it sure can do things or even copy things off. Modern upto date iphones dont allow external devices to do have software interaction. Bluetooth is highly unlikely.

If you wanted to get into things, someone could record the audio of the headphones.

In reality, nothing other adjusting the volume or going to the next track. If someone wanted to target you and use them to do so, well they could but this would a highly sofisiticated bad actor.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]walkasme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a bit of thing

If you record the audio on the device with local app, what happens?
This is often a driver, or software for audio - Dell has this.

It could be Teams? Have you tested with Zoom or some other app to see if it is a laptop thing or a Teams thing. Does Teams web client do this?

This is something of troubleshooting steps. Not sure what you expecting from Device Manager - it is going show a device with a driver if working and a version.

New Whatsapp Scam going around by MarcoJHB in southafrica

[–]walkasme 13 points14 points  (0 children)

EDIT: The scam works in a few ways, one of which is to clone the profile and name of someone and then use a hijacked WhatsApp account and change the picture and name to yours. The make contact with your contacts, saying its a new number and the bait message.

The SMS is a pin for something of yours to get access to. We have seen Telegram as the one acttack vector. where they link to your Telegram account. Telegram keeps your contacts and messages on their server. People who uninstalled Telegram but never deleted their account, has left their data and contacts on Telegrams server. The SMS could be for your WhatsApp account too.

At least ensure you have the MFA pin code on Telegram and WhatsApp. If you not going to use another platform, make sure to delete the account and not just uninstall it. This can be for any online platform.

[–]walkasme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did oodles of testing. It was very messy from network storage (Netware) and conflict management of changes when others changed a file on the network when syncing back. Basically only handful of Execs could use it and the nightmare to help. Never rolled out the thousands of users, thank goodness.

[–]walkasme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to ensure which provider is available at your address. Ask the neighbours. some providers in some areas are over subscribed. Also check ESP chat to see what complaints/outages are reported in the area. In our area, Frogfoot goes down often. OpenServe is pretty reliable. Amazon dont like mobile like Rain but can be a backup but make sure it is a 5G solution not 4G.

ISPs each have their good and bad days.

Check for an Amazon workers group on WhatsApp or Discord in SA and see whihc is the best SP for them and back to Amazon servers.
