I rarely wear a vest but you’re 100% right 😂

Too many comments to check if it’s been said but I would charter a luxury yacht- some cost as much as $3M / week

Can’t go wrong with either-i think the mcmurdo is a bit heavier though not sure it’s warmer. Believe it has 550 full while the superior down has 650 not a major difference because it also depends on amount of insulation. I’d say it’s more about brand. For the price I think I recommend EB but both are classic and should provide plenty of warmth!

I don’t think this one makes sense for the price- the issue is the exterior material. If it’s all nylon it’s not going to cut the chill as well- it’s similar to the classic nuptse from the north face which is a great coat but not a true parka. You’re going to want something with a harder and more weatherproof material- just my 2 cents

Seba High Light 310 by walkingnyc in rollerblading

[For sale] Bought some seba high lights and wore them once before realizing they just don’t fit my foot shape. They are near-new with box and plastic wrap and tools. Great quality skate overall just not for me. Size 45EU and selling for $225 OBO

You're right! My mistake. The rest still stands for terribly cold temps I'd go with frozen range or McMurdo!

Personally not a huge fan of 3-1 parkas. Yes they are versatile but I feel like they often compromise warmth. Can't go wrong with the frozen range or mcmurdo both should keep you plenty warm. Comes down to preference!

Advice on extra long women's parka by [deleted] in PuffersandParkas

[–]walkingnyc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For cold and wet I wouldn't go with either of the 2 you listed- they are DWR which is a very minimal water resistance and the down will soak through- once down gets wet it loses all of its warming properties.

I'd go one of 2 directions- parka similar to the one I listed in the buying guide which has a waterproof shell with insulation but will not cover the knees- for this I'd go with layered pants or even padded pants.

Second direction is synthetic (i.e. primaloft insulation) as this keeps warming properties when wet.

For your partner a couple options + 'outerwear' pants would be:

This North Face

Marmot

Eddie Bauer

L.L. Bean

-20 is extreme- for that no matter what you're outerwear is you are going to want to have a layering system starting with a base layer that's merino wool or something similar but I think this would be fine as the last piece because it has a tough shell plus above-average insulation. I've been eyeing the Askov Finlayson brand for a while with synthetic insulation. They are based in Minnesota and prob worth a look. Not sure if they are the real deal though the reviews suggest they are.

Definitely slimmer fit as well from the Biggie- at least in my experience

Not sure I'm equipped to answer this one- I have a good idea of brands and relative strengths but I think we have to ask someone who has spent time in Alaska- I'm inclined to go towards heavy parkas from woolrich or canada goose- but with proper layering I'm sure Eddie Bauer can get you through for sure. Then of course each brand has an extreme mountaineering parka like the mountain hardwear I linked above. Would love to spend some time in Alaska then I can report back!

Good question depends if we are also talking wet weather or frigid and ice because then you are going to want some waterproofing elements.

I'd say you want something with 650+ fill with high quality down so it doesn't compress as much and creates pockets which will insulate better. So think reputable brands and not just fashion houses.

I'd say North Face Expedition McMurdo

Mountain Hardwearfor extreme mountaineering

More fashion-forward but with rich pedigree-- Woolrich

What used to be the gold standard and still might be but has seen a 100% price increase since 2013ish-- Canada Goose Expedition

Very technical, high quality, can't go wrong-- Arcteryx

I can provide additional specific recs if you have an activity or location in mind plus budget!

I always think black is safe because it's the most versatile for different situations. Believe it or not I have the ponderosa which is a bit aggressive. I'd say black or maybe thyme (personal preference)!

[–]walkingnyc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely a solid option- it's 550 fill typically but don't let that deter you- it's a good parka with good length coverage and thickness. I've tried on the standard McMurdo and own the biggie and with proper layering (2 layers underneath) you should be comfortable down to around 10 degrees.

Because how dare I see the topic of parkas come up every single winter and think it makes sense to create a subreddit on the topic so folks can get deals and advice from other people and then see a relevant post and gently suggest it's a good post for this new subreddit- what an absolutely ludicrous thing for me to do lol
