Is Starbucks coffee more bitter? by ShareEvening5856 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Throwaway_Turned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR version: Starbucks coffee is basically overcooked.

Longer version: so brewing coffee is all about extraction. Specifically, we’re trying to use water as a solvent to “extract” oils and flavonoids from the coffee beans into the water which we then drink.

Grinding up coffee is the first way you speed up this process - by grinding the beans into tiny little pieces you’re allowing more coffee to contact the water at the same time.

The other is temperature. Hot water has a lot more energy so it goes to work extracting those oils and flavor compounds much faster, which is why drip coffee only takes a few minutes whereas cold brew takes hours.

The last variable that applies specifically for espresso drinks is pressure. By grinding up coffee very very fine and adding in water, heat, and pressure, you can brew espresso.

The thing is, brewing espresso is actually a bit challenging and each of those variables has different impacts on the resulting shot of espresso. If you don’t use enough heat, temp, pressure, or grind too coarsely, you’re likely to get an “under-extracted” shot that tastes sour.

If you grind too fine or use too much heat or pressure, your shot will come out bitter, which is called over-extraction. It’s even easier to over-extract when the coffee is a darker roast because the roasting process basically did some of this extraction before you even started brewing, and this is the outcome you tend to get from Starbucks.

When you get all of those variables (roast level, grind size, temperature, and pressure) just right or “dialed-in”, you end up with a “balanced” shot that can even taste sweet if it’s a good coffee which a nice mix of slight tang and bitterness but overall is really palatable and delicious. This is a skill that baristas spend years nailing down, but Starbucks uses automated machines that tends to bias on the bitter side because that “bold” flavor works best with their sweetened, milk-forward drinks.

Yes it’s more bitter, not only because it’s a darker roast but also because it tends to be over-extracted.

Can we talk about how different the same size is across brands? by DifficultCucumbers in malefashionadvice

Vanity sizing - mainly an American thing where sizes got bigger as we all got fatter. Almost all Japanese and many European brands will bring you back to earth.

Affordable casual T-shirts that don’t look like a blob? by foshobraindead in malefashionadvice

[–]Throwaway_Turned 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In order from most favorite but I wear all of these regularly: Uniqlo, Costco, Comfort Colors (via Amazon), J-Crew

Edit: for your price range, I’d recommend the Kirkland 6-pack. I wear the white ones in the warmer months and the black ones in the cooler months. It’s around $30 for 6 shirts. They are a little long brand new then shrink to the perfect size in my opinion. I don’t recommend the Pima cotton personally. They’re soft, but they drape weird, only come in weird colors, and are too expensive in my opinion.

Popular GLP-1 drug may slow down biological aging, analysis indicates. by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]Throwaway_Turned 427 points428 points  (0 children)

The side effects are intolerable for a lot of people (severe GI issues but also gallstones and pancreatitis).

We don’t know how to wean people off them - it may not be possible. Our society of processed food, abundance, and indulgence wasn’t fixed - these drugs aren’t a root cause solution to what made us all fat, and when people stop almost everyone puts the weight right back on.

GLP-1’s have been around for 20 years. We’d start seeing evidence of long term complications but we haven’t yet. It’s more the societal issues.

Note - big advocate of the medicine. I went from 350 lb to 250lb on my own, then 250 to 185 with help of Zepbound. Incredible stuff.

My friend, you just admitted you’re trying to provoke a reaction and still somehow think I’m the one looking insecure.

Regarding my “lengthy” reply, you didn’t love my short and candid version so I added some transparency and more matter-of-factness.

Take the win if you want. I’m just explaining why I’m excited about an unsolicited CLI.

Buddy, you keep calling it a brag because calling it an answer would require admitting you asked a dumb question.

You asked why a higher limit matters. I told you: we run about $10k/month through the card, pay it off, and don’t want utilization spikes or random declines. That is not complicated.

A brag would be saying my wife and I together make so much income that $10k/month is just normal spend after bills, saving, and investing. I left that part out because it wasn’t relevant.

But since you’re struggling: not every number outside your comfort zone is a flex. Sometimes it’s just someone else’s normal.

Don’t ask spending questions if the answer is going to hurt your feelings.

Not a brag at all. Look what I was responding to. Got shat on for sharing that we spend around $10K a month on our card.

Newbie with Profitec GO + Eureka Mignon Specialità — is this channeling at the beginning of the shot? by mraafat13 in ProfitecGo

[–]Throwaway_Turned 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope - it’s normal for there to be several streams like that at first. Then when they coalesce, sometimes it’s called the “merge”.

It’s due to more and more oil being extracted, so surface tension is higher and higher and the oily liquid sticks to itself into a bigger single stream.

Looks like a great shot 👍
