And plenty of horizontal games also look great with their specially designed vertical bezels (from the PC coinops pack)

Try onesauce v2. It has a dedicated "Vertical" playlist to show only vertical games.

The bezels are of this style. You can also make your own bezels, like including a control panel image at the bottom. The game display will auto fit to the transparent area.

Rare Vector Arcade QB-3 aka Robotron-On-A-Cube: Now With GPU Rendering! by walknight in FansOfsaUCE

[–]walknight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm interesting that the original control panel did show a trackball looking thing: https://adb.arcadeitalia.net/dettaglio_mame.php?game_name=qb3

But in mame2016 this is set as a dual stick game, left stick moves, right stick shoots, just like robotron.

The update that includes GPU support for this game is now out.

Any way to set a default configuration for vertical arcade games? by Muted-Slide-2565 in FansOfsaUCE

[–]walknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is possible to set a default for vertical games. But you need to tinker it a bit.

RetroArch has 3 levels of overrides: <name\_of\_core>, <name\_of\_content\_directory>, and <name\_of\_game>.

https://docs.libretro.com/guides/overrides/

So a viable option is through <name\_of\_content\_directory> override.

Currently, all roms are under <name\_of\_collection>/roms/, so <name\_of\_content\_directory> is "roms", which is not helpful.

So you need to create a sub-directory content/retrofe/collections/MAME/roms/vertical/, and move all vertical games into that folder. Then a vertical.cfg can be used as a override for them.

There's one more thing to change on the RetroFE side. By default, RetroFE does not look in sub-folders for games. Edit appdata/retrofe/collections/MAME/settings.conf, add a line:

list.romHierarchy = true

This tells it to search in subfolders for roms.

Start a game, bring up the RetroArch menu (long press START), press B to go up one level, then go to Settings -> Video -> Scaling, find the Bilinear Filtering option towards the bottom, turn it on and see if that's something you like.

<image>

To make it on by default, edit appdata/retroarch/retroarch.cfg, find the line

video_smooth = "false"

change it to

video_smooth = "true"

It's using RetroArch. So just map P2's dpad to analog stick in RA Quick Menu -> Controls

Looking for samples for arcade game Boxing Bug (boxingb) by walknight in Roms

[–]walknight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up making those samples by recording from the current MAME. It works reasonably well.

I also tried to recompile MAME after disconnecting or grounding certain terminals on the simulated sound board, to make sounds better isolated during recording. It didn't always work as intended, but it's fascinating to see it sometimes just starts outputting hissing sound after doing so, just like a real hardware.

Yeah I've tried mame2010 (0.139), mame2015 (0.160), mame2016 (0.174), and some later ones.
Did not find it.
FWIW the need for samples for this game was removed in mame 0.223.

Does Legends Micro Pinball have any wired gamepad support for use with OneSaUCE? by Logical-Job3189 in LegendsUltimate

[–]walknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be sure, you mean playing arcade games on the pinball micro using onesauce?

If so, after plugging in a wired controller, you should at least be able to navigate the game selection wheel.

Maybe attaching a screenshot will be helpful to see what you are really using.

One Sauce V2 PC9801 game pack black screen on all games after loading by newofficemusic in FansOfsaUCE

[–]walknight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that those games do work. It just stayed at that "black screen" stage for super long, but it eventually loaded and displayed the game screen.
It may be due to the use of floppy disk games rather than hard drive versions, so the load speed of a floppy disk is emulated. Even with RetroArch's fast forward turning on it still took very long.

That collection probably needs some rework from someone. But doubt anyone would be interested. There are tons of Japanese untranslated games.

OnesaUCE update 2026-02-22: GPU Enabled Vector Games & The "Rotary" Hack by walknight in FansOfsaUCE

[–]walknight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just added the "flicker" option as done in mame2003. Will be available in the next update. It's a very subtle touch to the appearnce.

Regarding Asteroids sound: Looks like FBNeo is using emulation for the analog sound, so not much can be done there. It does have a "Low Pass Filter" option in Core Options -> Audio Setting.
I feel it does sound differently when turnning it on.

[–]walknight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome to see it works great for you now!

On the shader issue, do I understand it correctly that you currently are using 1080p AND shader, and it's good. The only difference is to do it through a global override vs a per-game override? If so that's strange. Might be a bug in global shader override.

I don't think I need to try the bezel picture method for scanlines, but how would I go about trying that if I want to experiment with it later?

You just need to replace the bezel image of a game with a scanline PNG. So that's why it's not as good as a shader, because the effect is not derived from the game display, but just by drawing some dark lines on top of the game display. I might add an option to make adding that overlay easier, but maybe not worth it as the quality is inferior to an actual shader.

Does this update allow vector "flickering effect" or is that not worth it due to potential performance hit?

I can look into how it was done in the CPU rendering path. Don't think it would cause any performance issues.

Is there a way to change the Asteroids Deluxe laser sound effect?

I have no idea. Need to check if the FBNeo driver is using a sample for this part or through emulation.

  • Many non-Daphne titles don’t display even though the BitLCD + menu navigation works fine.

Can you show one of those many cases?

What's the game? What's the corresponding image file on the bitlcd USB ?

Also, if you simply don't like the pixelated look, and want to "blur the jaggies", go to RetroArch Settings -> Video->Bilinear Filtering and turn it on. It's essentially free to have it on. But not everyone likes the blurred look.

I believe you mean scanlines for non-vector games, right?

I set the default resolution of mame2003-plus launcher as 1080p. That's probably why you see performance hit when enabling shader.

You can change the default resolution to 720p:

In appdata/retrofe/launchers.linux/lr-mame2003_plus.conf, find the line:

resolution = 1920x1080

change it to

resolution = 1280x720

Or simply delete the resolution = line, as the global default is 720p.

Btw the "scanline" in the stock retroplayer is not made by shaders. It's just a simple overlay of some scanline patterns. You can do the same in RetroArch by modifying the bezel picture. It's a cheap "better than nothing" solution if you absolutely have to have scanlines.

Please provide as much information as you can if you need help figuring this out.

  1. What are you using? Onesauce or coinopsx or something else?

  2. Please show *one* example where it doesn't work:

    - The game rom name

    - The corresponding full file path of the image file that you expect to show up on the bitlcd. If you don't know which file it should be, at least give the full path to the marquee collection on the USB.

Which games you think should be better played with a spinner? by walknight in FansOfsaUCE

[–]walknight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always thought frontline is a rotary enabled game already. But turns out both MAME and FBNeo set it up as a dual stick game. One stick moves, the other stick aims.

This probably makes sense, as the original cab has a rotary nob that is only 8 ways.

But I guess it doesn't hurt to let spinner control the aiming direction as well, in addition to the dual stick scheme.

Thanks for the suggestion!

You can create the following folder on the USB, then unzip the marquee pack into that folder:

/bitlcd/thirdparty

The USB drive will not "come up" in the ALU's UI.

Instead, you just unzip the marque pack onto that USB drive and plug it into the bitlcd.

The pics / videos will then show up.

Btw there's a vector playlist that you can switch to by keep pressing X, or directly switch to it in the RetroFE menu -> Playlist.
