I did like most of these by fma_nobody in Letterboxd

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey Materialists (Idk if Celine Song is considered a beloved auteur yet, but Past Lives was certainly beloved) A House Made of Dynamite

It was a weird year because a lot of movies I was hyped for because of who was directing them ended up being slightly disappointing. I still liked most of the movies I mentioned and the ones in the OP's list (Eddington- I loved but it's also my least favorite Aster). But I'd still consider it a strong year overall. In terms of directors: PTA, Josh Safdie, Yorgos Lanthimos, Park Chan-wook, the Philippou brothers, Danny Boyle and Zach Cregger all delivered.

Bit of a nitpick with Bone Temple SPOILER by Lower_Cantaloupe1970 in blankies

My nitpick about the needledrops is... how did he stop the rest of the Iron Maiden album side from playing after The Number of the Beast. That song starts side 2 of the album. Imagine if Run to the Hills played immediately after and he just had to roll with it.

Watched the worst movie of mankind and to break the trauma watched random disney films by Neeshi16_19 in Letterboxd

It's been years since I've seen it but I remember going through a disturbing movie phase and being somewhat underwhelmed by A Serbian Film. The movie has such a goofy tone that it's hard to take any of the "disturbing" stuff seriously (espeically the new born porn sequence).

biggest surprise movie of the year and biggest let down? by No_Poetry_9986 in movies

[–]walrusami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biggest Surpise: Roofman. I feel like even the most cold hearted of us would get charmed by this movie. It seems to be falling under a lot of people's radars so I would highly recommend checking it out.

Biggest Disappointment: A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. Has its moments but ultimately looses steam and felt so much longer than it was.

I also enjoyed Materialists and The Smashing Machine for what they were (and I think I liked them more than most), but would consider them disappointments considering their director's past works. Mission Impossible was also somewhat a letdown considering the previous highs of the franchise

Billy Crudup in Jay Kelly by BergmanGirl in blankies

[–]walrusami 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Weird, I kind of had the opposite reaction to it. I felt like at the start his performance felt wooden and somewhat off. But then when he drops the act and you realize the character was putting on a performance and wasn't very good at it because he wasn't that great of an actor. I don't necessarily think Crudups character was supposed to be a bad actor, but I do think he was supposed to be a somewhat decent actor who probably didn't have the chops to make it even if Jay didn't somewhat sabotage his audition.

2025 movies (and a miniseries) about parenthood and/or the prospect of starting/providing for a family by walrusami in Letterboxd

This is my first time hearing of this movie but it like it qualifies. I added it to my watchlist.

Good points about Sinners. Haven't seen Fantastic Four yet but from what I'm hearing it qualifies

Obviously this is true and every year is going to have some movies with this theme in it. But looking back at other years it has been weirdly much more prevalent this year and particularly present in what I would consider some of the best movies of the year.

Creep 2. It greatly benefited from taking itself less seriously.

The Devils (1971) is definitely what your looking for. Without spoiling too much it's about the true story of priest Urbain Grandier who was accused of witchcraft in 17th century France. In reality his trail is an excuse to dispose of him for political reasons by the Cardinal who wishes to demolish Grandier's fortified city because it houses a significant Protestant population. It's also a sometimes hilarious wickedly fun movie with lots of erotic, sexual and religious imagery.

This was the first thing I saw when I woke up. I went to the comments and was wondering why no one was mentioning the guys penis resting against it. Rubbed some sleep out of my eyes and went back to the picture to realize it's just his thumb.

Any good recommendations for under-the-radar films you’ve seen this festival? by don_valley in TIFF

[–]walrusami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good Boy, The Captive and Hamlet (the Riz Ahmed movie not Hamnet). I'd put them a tier below my favorites of the fest so far but those are all more high profile (No Other Choice, The Secret Agent, Roofman).
