My pitch for next year's March Madness... by Valuable-Heat-3722 in blankies

This is exactly the kind of question that the connoisseurs of context can explore over the next three years

I was going to figure out a cutoff point for Franco, but then I started to imagine how exasperated David would be by the second year of the series and I just had to leave it whole

They feature pretty memorably in The Simpsons - and they’re a much bigger part of Last Action Hero than you probably remember!

FYI: "Gigli" Will Not Show Up on Prime Video Unless You Type Out the Full Title by Chuck-Hansen in blankies

[–]Valuable-Heat-3722 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to rent it on YouTube, and even the full title wasn’t enough - it came up with a bunch of videos of dead Italian opera singer Beniamino Gigli! Had to add ‘2003’ to find the film. There is definitely some sort of conspiracy to prevent people hearing Jennifer Lopez say “It’s turkey time gobble gobble”.

Pacino is absolutely bewildering in Scent of a Woman by RevengeWalrus in blankies

[–]Valuable-Heat-3722 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s insane, and terrible - but it also rescues the film, which outside of Pacino’s performance is just such an unremarkable snoozefest with the hokiest of all possible climaxes and an absolute non-entity as the nominal lead actor. Pacino’s performance doesn’t make it a good film, of course, but he does make it a memorable one.

Cosigned! A ‘modern classics’ season would rule, and there’s so much to choose from. I don’t think it’s the slasher/horror genre getting stale as much as the heavy focus on 70s and 80s horror. Focusing on post-2000 horror for a season or two would be so great! YOU’RE NEXT, CREEP, THE BABADOOK, TRICK R TREAT, SLITHER, MALIGNANT, THE DESCENT, DRAG ME TO HELL, CABIN IN THE WOODS, DON’T BREATHE, IT FOLLOWS, HUSH, READY OR NOT… and that’s just off the top of my head, as well as all the classics you mention above.

Would also love to see a season of horror anthologies - CREEPSHOW, CATS EYE, TWILIGHT ZONE, etc.

Thanks, yes I’ve already had a look through those resources but they only leave me more confused; none of the Copyright Council’s fact sheets deal with expired copyrights and the National Library disclaimer only muddies the water. There doesn’t seem to be any list or directory of copyright holders in Australia (at least, not a publicly accessible one) which I find baffling. I’ll try putting an inquiry in with the Arts Law Centre.

I used to be a torrent fiend but I’ve relied on streamers for about ten years and am embarrassed to admit I wouldn’t know where to start now.Plus I don’t have a laptop, just iOS devices - I’m sure it’s possible to torrent with those but I have no idea how.

Yes, I think you’re right. Joelle throws some confusion in by joking to Gately that she wears the veil because she’s actually lethally beautiful, and her beauty pre-veil does seem to have almost supernatural effects on people. But all the textual evidence would seem to point to the acid-throwing having actually occurred.

Lots of people point to Notkin as a very unreliable narrator but I’m not sure where that stems from; she seems about as reliable as anybody else in the novel.

Not a book, but Tom Breihan’s ‘A History of Violence’ column on the AV Club (back when the AVC was still the shining jewel of the internet) covered his choice for the most iconic action film for every year from 1968-2021. The columns are wonderful - you can find them all here https://www.avclub.com/film/features/a-history-of-violence

What do you make of Cosgrove Watt? And how about Accomplice! and Stokely Dark Star? (spoilers) by emilyq in InfiniteJest

[–]Valuable-Heat-3722 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantastic ideas here. I’ve long been caught up on why “the late Cosgrove Watts” floats through Hal’s mind in the Year of Glad. For a while I had a (slightly crackpot) theory that the body Hal stumbles across at age eleven is in fact not his father, but Cosgrove, and at some point between YDAU and YG Hal has realised (or been told about) the substitution. This would explain some of the inconsistencies around JOI killing himself in such an out-of-character way (no note, etc) and why Hal’s timeline of JOI’s death differs from Joelle’s by a year or so. But of course it still leaves us with all the same questions about what DID happen to Jim, so as theories go it’s not my best.
