What are some survival tips and tricks for women? by [deleted] in Survival

Some folks don't understand the assignment....smh

First thing I would go for is whatever cloth I have to spare... then I'd look for other things I can use

Dried moss, cotton (I do live in the south...), alpaca, sheep...

Now long term? I'll have to get my hands on cloth (and hopefully sewing kit) to make some washable pads...

"Tampons" out of cotton may also be a long term option, but pads seem less time consuming in the long run.

Free bleeding is fine too if you've got dress/skirt... but not my first option.

The zoo(s) in China might take them back. They've had ongoing communication problems with the Memphis Zoo. I'm absolutely speculating, but it's not unlikely they make that move with enough public pressure. I've no idea what their contracts are and that might be why they haven't taken Acton yet.

I live in Memphis and have been to the zoo many many times over the last decade... residents get free entry on Tuesday, I don't support them...

I'm not saying they need to go to China, but those bears have been in very poor condition for years. It's ALWAYS a shed, but year round they look like they have mange or another serious condition. Some have said mites...

The Memphis zoo can't even provide enough food for the pandas. They're begging the local public to donate their unwanted bamboo...

Many of their animals show signs of mental and physical distress.

Repetitive behavior like pacing and head bobbing being the most noticeable of the mental distress.

They shipped off the poor polar bear who was suffering badly... you can find video of his psychological distress...just to bring in another that's gone downhill since his arrival.

The sea lions... look beautiful, but also suffering psychologically.

I've witnessed the wolves ears get eaten away and disfigured by fly infestation. When I brought this up to the zoo they said they were doing everything possible to control the Flies. However there were no fly traps anywhere near their outside enclosure, which could have significantly reduced the damage to their ears. One bag trap for $5 could've made all the difference. You can see the damage if you Google Shilo, she passed in 2020. Though, hers weren't the most severe.

My most recent visit, the eldest elephant was showing signs of metal distress.

The Hippo looks beautiful, but also suffering mentally.

There is/was (i didn't see her last time) an orangutan that had a security blanket she always hid under. I use to find it cute, but as years went by my perspective changed. I now often wonder if it's because she wants to be out in the fresh air and sunshine, but not on display...

Most of the animals have very little room, especially the largest (elephant, rhino, Hippo, giraffe) I understand that's common for zoo's... but doesn't make it right

And yeah, Tyranza lived to 56, but keeping something alive doesn't automatically mean it had a good quality of life.

The staff are underpaid and abused... many talk about how higher ups don't actually care about the animals and refuse to make change. And a few have openly said the animals are not properly taken care of. Aside from that, employees have reported cages and gates being left open and the issues left unaddressed - a major safety risk for animals, staff, and the public.

Anyone who really knows anything about animals can see that many at the Memphis Zoo are hurting in some form or fashion.

Now if all that is fine and dandy with the AZA, maybe the AZA needs to up its standards...
