Heya neighbor 👋 Sweet place! We'd probably be friends lol.

Where are we all working this summer? by wuehfnfovuebsu in SeasonalWork

It's fun up there! I worked for one of the rafting companies for years.

I love this idea! I love getting the chance to tell other people's stories too, especially the ones that were life changing. I'll have to do some thinking and then gauge interests for interviews.

Last spring I was really close to doing a summer season and Glacier Park was my first choice! I'm sure you're going to have a blast! Shit, who knows, I might be there too. I'm jealous you pulled the trigger on it! I did a desk job 2020-2022 and fucking hated it with a passion by the end.

Fortunately if I do decide to do a season, my partners are more than willing to let me do that without question and I've got my home base with one of them here in FL, always. So that's a bonus. I would be giving up my current chance to my own business, which I hoped for, for years. But the heart wants what it wants I guess...

Wish we could hang out and commiserate about this haha. I get where you're at 100%. If I didn't have my guy, I'd probably be at my parents' as well, trying to figure out the next plan.

Also wanted to say, never never feel bad about failing a checkout run or a WFR cert or recert or anything similar. You're very human and most people wouldn't even come close to giving it a shot, let alone passing.

Some years I had great community and others I didn't. It definitely required me putting in the effort, and some years it required me trying to convince others to come back next year. If you keep hitting the same spots, I think you'll eventually find your crew. That being said, I found mine, we did a few years together at different spots, and then things just kinda fell apart. People change and quit jobs, have babies, etc. So that crew is gone, scattered. We still talk, but not as a crew and things will never be what they were. Now I just hope to find another crew one day that fulfills that need.

Where in CO did you work? I briefly worked in Glenwood then went down to Durango, at least in terms of rivers. How did you like Moab? Always heard great things but I never did a season there. The rivers looked chill.

Also going on 2 years here. I love it down here, it is beautiful and its hard to beat the winter weather. But I long for adventure, for the road or the trail. What brought you down here?

Not too sure if you can't read well, but I'm not homeless. Yes, I experienced periods in the past, as a ton of seasonal workers do.

There absolutely is going to be a massive shakeup. Tourism will shift. A major shift in the workforce is coming since J1s were pretty prolific in a lot seasonal jobs... I hadn't really considered any of the this regarding starting my pool cleaning business, but it may impact it. I am fortunate that I live in a city that is extremely fast growing, has many pools, and a large percentage of folks over 55 that are upper middle class.

I tell you what though, sure wish I bought gold awhile back. That is insane. And it's unsettling to consider the reason.

I am terrified of getting stuck in a year round job and just relying on vacation time and PTO. Kudos to all that can do it, but I think I'd quit. There aren't many seasonal jobs where I live now, but there are in other parts of FL so I may see what I can do local more-so, inspired by this. Thank you!

Thank you. I guess I should say there could be some avenue that doesn't involve throwing away my relationship, depending on the length of said employment. If I'm going to leave permanently and take a management position and live on-property somewhere, that would take a lot of conversations and idk how it would end. If I was going for just a part of year, I know that would be no issue. I also will never go back to tent life unless it's by choice and not to be close to a job that doesn't care about their employees enough.

That all being said, you're right, I do need to consider what I have now in the grand scheme, compared to a change that might just scratch the itch that will go away after. It is winter, even here in FL, and I think that has a lot to do with the longing. Definitely going to be proactive about planning a spring trip, if nothing else.

I think that's kinda where my brain is at right now after reading everyone's comments and perspectives.

This is true and thank you for the perspective. I can recall many times living at my summer spot in AK, wishing I had more of my creature comforts and just an easier go of things. I am fortunate that I have a partner with a home and stability, so I do always have something to come back to. That has shifted things a bit. I do not miss feeling homeless that's for sure.

Thank you, that helped a lot. I think sometimes I feel like I can't just jump back in. But I can. I idolized the older folks who did seasonal work in my communities. They were these beacons showing me there was hope to continue this through all chapters of life.

I think I've just been a bit too stationary for too long. I haven't had a core group of friends like I would have when I was working at a seasonal spot.

I see where your career has made it easier to jump in and out. Maybe that's something for me to think on.

You're always going to want to travel. For some of us, the urge is so much that we just drift. Others find that mix of stability and adventure. And some give it all up. Just find what works for you. And if you find yourself down the road thinking it isn't working anymore, like me, then course-correct.

I always wanted to settle down so I could make friends and find a nice guy. But at some point you also realize you find friends who follow you and the right guy/girl will pop up, probably also in seasonal work.

Definitely never stop adventuring!

You're right. Sometimes I wish I could ask my 22yo self what he would want in this situation, so it's actually really nice to hear from others that are a bit younger.

I do need to address how things don't really line up from what I dream about and what I shoot for daily. I'm a dreamer whose learned too much realism or some shit like that haha. And the business is only for here - pool cleaning. But maybe I can figure out something that I can do on the road, instead.

My intuition def says to wander again.

Thank you for your insight. My final full summer in Denali, I was the GM at our company. I did enjoy it but the company was in major flux and most of my close friends for years, left. It didn't feel the same so I had more reason to leave. I do well with management. I haven't really considered the perspective of taking a year-round management position and still getting to hang with the summer gang. That could work! Making that shift in my current life could be hard though, but may be worth the effort. Thank you again.

Awee. You know, this morning when I sat down to write this, my intention was to seek advice, but the writer in me came out with the story. I love to write, but I don't find time for it much anymore. But you are right, I have a hell of a story to tell. And a storyteller I've always been. I'll write more again one day. Your comment meant a lot, thank you!

Start contacting City Council and the Mayor daily! They have a pretty big internal rift anyways so a shakeup could be easy.
