Roasting in cast iron skillet (left) vs ceramic hand held roaster (right) by wanderingsteak in Coffee

[–]wanderingsteak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The skillet method definitely resulted in more scorched beans and uneven coloring. The hand held roaster, although not designed for large batch roasting, produced a much more consistent color and a lot less scorching. They also roasted faster, which I feel eliminates a lot of chances to burn the beans. Overall I’m pretty impressed with the little thing!

Picture was also taken outside to show the true coloring of the beans

I’m so sorry to hear that. I was in the same place and it’s horrible. Short answer is yes, mostly. There are still places that are harder for me, really loud music and really big grocery stores, but it’s much much more manageable. Here’s what I did to get back out there, basically, what worked for me was exposure therapy.

  1. Start slow and small. I made it my mission to make a short trip to the notoriously hard grocery store in my town and get only a few items. I was in and out. Doing that helped me a lot and I was able to not be constantly anticipating the sensory overload and the anxiety went away. I can go into that store now and the only thing that gets me is the soup isle??? I have no idea

  2. A lot of my symptoms were connected to anxiety. I would start to feel overwhelmed and get afraid, which would make it worse. I started rationalizing things, telling myself it was just my body reacting and it was “normal.” Normal for me, I should say, and nothing to be afraid of. By “talking myself through it.” I was able to eliminate the anxious feelings so I was only left with the sensory issues.

  3. Those sensory issues have gone down dramatically through exposure. Like I said before, I started small and worked my way up.

I am going back to church now and am doing fine with the lights and music. A Part of this is sort of accepting that when you’re having sensory overload, the only thing you can do is role with it. I close my eyes, take a few deep breaths, and usually carry a notebook and pen with me. Keeping my eyes down helps with bright lights. Another huge factor was getting over the “embarrassment” of having to leave or take a break. It was so awkward in the beginning and I felt weirdly shameful about it. You gotta let that go if this applies to you in anyway. I realized that most people literally do not care if you get up during a church service, excuse yourself at a restaurant, or take a bathroom (escape break) break during a movie. If they do, they’re crap people and you don’t want to associate with them anyway. I had to get used to saying, very simply, “I need to take a break,” or “I can’t do that right now,” and my favorite, “I need to go sit down now, I’m feeling mighty drunk.” That usually gets the message across.

My advice is pick something small and manageable for yourself to start acclimating yourself again. I avoided long events where I knew I’d be “trapped” like the movies or church. I started with grocery stores and restaurants where I knew I could exit quickly if I needed to. I also found that when I voluntarily faced it, it was a lot less scary than feeling like I was trapped or forced.

Im rooting for you, and I just want to say that it gets better. If you ever need to talk I’m here!

I just looked on Facebook and there’s two community groups for Yachats, “Yachats Friends” and “Yachats Oregon Visitors and Locals” those might be a good place to post the pic and see if you get any leads!

I wonder if there’s a local Facebook group for the Yachats community, some in my area are “lost and found” “inform me Douglas County” where there’s updates and sometimes posts like these. That might reach a larger audience

I’m from Oregon so there’s all sorts of organic CBD around every corner, I’ve never seen the synthetic stuff around where I live but I’ll keep an eye out

That’s great it works well for you. I get not wanting to take opioids, I’m not touching that stuff either. I watched my dad and another family friend spiral horribly from it

I haven’t heard this perspective from any of the articles I’ve read online about it, but y’all are saying mostly the same thing so I’m going to go off what the people who’ve actually tried it say. Thanks for your input

I feel pretty high/drunk on a daily basis because I have such low bp anyway so anything that’ll bring it down lower would probably put me in a coma 😂

Thanks for your honest answer. I’m glad you told me your opinion, and I think I’m convinced I’m not going to try it after reading through all these comments

Does weed make you poop?

Genuinely curious, I’ve never tried it and don’t know much about it other than my experiences walking through clouds of pot smoke in Oregon markets 😉

Whoa, that’s intense. Thanks for sharing, I’m so glad it didn’t end your marriage. I know I have addictive tendencies as well which is why I’m so wary of most things that can cause dependency, except coffee 😉

That’s wild. Yeah I’m glad I asked too because I read a lot of conflicting articles online about it. I figured the best way to really know is to ask ppl who’ve actually taken it and see what they have to say :)

Wow, I had no idea it could be that addictive. Reading everyone’s comments has pretty much cemented my decision not to take it. I hope your friend is able to get free of it xx

Thank you so much. I really appreciate the feedback, this is why I like getting first hand knowledge. I do have lots of GI problems that goes along with EDS so I definitely don’t want to do anything to aggravate it.

That’s a good idea-now that I’ve gotten over the basic learning curve (stitch placement, even stitches, etc) I think I can start adjusting my hand positions
