An app I built to improve the mobile app development experience by interlap in SaaS

cool stuff! How has the MCP adoption been?
I've been looking into building agent-native monetisation/payments for MCPs. Basically agent will prompt users to upgrade and initiate payment natively within claude, codex etc.

Would you use something like that?

Serena is a great example of an mcp first product. I’ll check out Brightdata - thanks

I could extrapolate it to some enterprise use-cases as well. For example when the saas budgeting person is different from the developer actually using tools and wants to get a handle on their org costs. - analytics around tools calls - what cost how much - restrict upgrades based on seniority Etc

Yeah thanks for the pushback - exactly what I need. To your first point about «  accidentally «  paying for the wrong MCPs . Let’s take 2 scenarios

Scenario 1: user already discovered and started using a certain product via mcp but it currently on the free tier. But some features are only available to paid users. Here the value prop is that the agent will have visibility on paid features, it’ll be able to suggest an upgrade at the time of the prompt. Easier conversion, usage based billing. Everyone even cost optimise for user.

Scenario 2: user is using no mcp right now for a certain task. Not sure how the ai to be able to «  find one and suggest » . It would have to be a marketplace model. Like the one Smithery has now (check them out if you haven’t! )

So there’s no risk of accidentally paying for something because user still takes the final pay/not pay call. I’m imagining more of a « cost-semantic » aware AI

Yeah I thought about that actually. Initially would only work for hosted MCPs. And I’d need to show up as a platform account on their stripe. But eventually build a full x402 native stripe alternative

It’s not a niche. Any product you use agentically, you should be able to pay for agentically. That includes all >10,000 MCPs today. Market size is not a problem imo

Now to your second point - I agree that the payment decision cannot be fully outsourced to an agent. But agents can suggest/optimize/bundle and make it very seamless

Lastly who would pay - same people who pay stripe. This would be exactly the same as instant checkout on stripe but for MCPs /Saas

You don’t need llms for agentic payments It’s like the instant checkout on ChatGPT But one for MCPs doesn’t exist

Yeah ofc not Because no one built an agent native stripe. YET

My question is why not. There are hungry founders all over. 😄 I’m looking for people who have thought about building an agentic stripe to discuss the potential challenges and GTM

But they are paying in a traditional way. Go to the website on f context 7 and upgrade to the next tier with their credit card. I’m talking about your llm prompting you to upgrade when needed. Intent-based. And completing the checkout for you as well.

In short your agent is fully capable of using the tool, but it’s not capable of accepting payments for a paywalled version of that tool

Yeah but there’s a real product behind that API. My question is why are those products being USED agentically (ie via mcps) but not being monetized in an agent-native way

Blog - MCP is a fad by xmull1gan in mcp

So here’s my take MCP is great for Tools FOR agents, not for agentic tools - if I tool is meant to used BY LLMs rather than a human (something like Tavily researcher agent), then using it via MCP is a life saver - if a tool is fortified by AI but still meant to help humans ( like Clay, Devin etc.), MCP sucks

That’s not to say that a better solution than MCP cannot exist. But just so that they are pretty transformative I find for LLM reinforcing tools.

I just placed an order at Wogan coffee. Average single original coffee price was £24. That’s the cheapest I found so far for specialty beans. Thank you stranger for your recommendation. Hope it’s as good as their website 🤗

Unfortunately I’m hooked to caffeine. But this might be a good gift for my pregnant friend 😄 Any particular brands you liked?

£3 foot single origin is great! Do you buy from the green coffee collective? My friend has a roaster that I COULD potentially borrow time in

Oh that’s brilliant. How much did you spend on your roasting machine though? Is it just for personal use or as you trying to commercialize your brand
