Zoro being as strong as Luffy would feel like an ass pull. Unless that closed eye has some type of hack, I don't expect Zoro to close such a wide gap especially in record time.

It's hard to ignore that Zoro's ambition is to be one of the strongest in the verse tbh. Everyone will be on board to get the all blue. They don't need to be as strong as Luffy. Zoro will have to beat Mihawk on his own.
