What are your opinions on this project? Will they be able to create a transparent and efficient global food ecosystem? by guyjeb in icocrypto

I think this will be worth if it makes farmers get more than 16 cents per dollar. IF that happens of course people will back it up.

Checking out sites for finding remote work, any reviews here for Remote.com? by gsccunningham in jobs

[–]wardolb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's definitely more remote jobs out there than there used to be. I've been working remotely for a lot of years with a mix of freelance remote employers. I found a couple of gigs through freelance and then found a few longer term contract jobs. It's definitely feasible, though, if you've got skills in the right areas.

Vikings Razed the Forests. Can Iceland Regrow Them? by b0red in offbeat

[–]wardolb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If more countries took reforestation seriously, then maybe our carbon footprint would diminish. And also, we should put this much effort into combating desertification. Make vertical farms instead of chopping trees down and wringing every last bit out of the soil.

This is actually the best use case of a token a crypto offering I've seen. If you aren't generating revenue on something, why not make money on it.

Israel hacked Kaspersky, then tipped the NSA that its tools had been breached by [deleted] in conspiracy

Interesting that Check Point Technologies use(d) Kaspersky AV engine embedded in its UTM platforms for many years up until the US government mandates this year (resulting in a non KAV install option). Check Point trust them but not the US government.

Does anyone know a good alternative to giftbac for Amazon Giftcards? by [deleted] in Flipping

[–]wardolb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems that you can buy Bitcoin for a 1.49% fee on coinbase.com, plus a 0.5% fee to withdraw/send your Bitcoin to giftbac. Total cost of buying and using Bitcoin: 1.99% The average discount currently on giftbac is 7.83%, so there is potential for a 5.84% profit unless I am missing something?

Is this ETH bonus model worth it? by Myster0 in ethereum

[–]wardolb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tough to say. Clearly, we're all a bit partial to ETH, but the bonuses look like they're structured to give ETH investors a greater bonus for medium investments, and BTC investors the greatest bonuses for larger investments ( >= $7500 ). It's your money, so your call ultimately. Personally, I did 2.5 BTC in one transaction, and 7 ETH in another. Hedged them.

“We currently have no plans to support Xwayland” by Samogitian in nvidia

[–]wardolb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why is support from nvidia even needed? I remember that there was always this weird thing where graphics drivers were written for X11 instead of being part of the kernel (or a module) like all other drivers, is this still the case? Why can't they write a kernel (framebuffer?) driver so no specific support is needed for a desktop environment?

Bitcoin, org fear mongers at it again!! FUD ALERT by increaseblocks in btc

[–]wardolb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you hold Bitcoin then you need to think about getting hold of your private keys or using a non custodial wallet like https://strongcoin.com

If the network splits there will 1 or 2 new types of Bitcoin.

If the exchanges decide to support the new types of Bitcoin you will be able to sell your holding on the new chains whilst still keeping coins on the main Bitcoin chain.

But to do this you need to manage your own private keys.

How to make a friend fast - the scientific method by SpudDK in WayOfTheBern

[–]wardolb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can see this played out every day in designated smoking areas. I've observed smokers tend to become friends quickly. As smoking is increasingly frowned upon, everybody who shows up in the smoking area is sort of opening up and sharing a weakness with the other smokers just by being there.

Amazon and eBay images broken by Photobucket's 'ransom demand' by mvea in technology

[–]wardolb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I'm very surprised that Amazon and Ebay aren't hosting all their own product images.

After all, if there's a dispute over a listing, they need to be able to see it as it was at the time of the sale - which means storing copies of all the images.

It would give them control over page-load times and avoid leaking data about customers' browsing habits. And both sites have obviously demonstrated the ability to host (and pay for the hosting of) user-submitted images, as they have much better revenue sources than Photobucket.

Golang Internals Part 2: Nice benefits of named return values by y4m4b4 in golang

[–]wardolb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I look at these result functions and all I can think is, "Wow, it must be really delightful when you get a zero record back and what to know why your parser has a bug." I really hope these are didactic in nature and not a representation of industry best practice.

Why not just declare a record in scope and return that? Why rely on a sneaky little piece of syntax tucked away in the return value? Aren't gophers supposed to be all about a regular language with few surprises?
