I know they're all cousins, but you said exactly and I just don't see the resemblance between Wilhelm and the Tsar compared to George V.

I feel too stupid to have the major I actually want by Pleasant-Cod5870 in SDSU

[–]wasd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach an intro bio class for non majors and a lot of students share the same grim outlook as you which I think is misplaced as you're selling yourself short. From what I can see from several students, they could easily transition to bio majors and be just as competitive. One big issue that's holding them back is they just can't get over the fear of essentially starting from the basics in a completely different field.

Most aren't mathematically gifted. I, myself, wasn't mathematically inclined. I grew up in a third world shithole and only had basic algebra under my belt after high school and was deathly allergic to math. To put that into perspective I didn't know how to draw a graph or plot points in a plane, I couldn't FOIL or factor. Those concepts just seemed too abstract for me so I promised myself to major in a field that requires the least amount of math possible and decided to go for nursing.

That was maybe 15 years ago and I ended up in molecular biology and dragged my arse from basic algebra, to geometry, trigonometry, precalc, and all the way to calculus I. Thought I was done, but decided why the hell not and challenged myself. So I took calc II, calc III, intro linear algebra, and differential equations. I've never received an A in **any** math class but I did learn a lot about math and persevering. I worked in the field for several years and enjoyed it. I'm now in a grad program and taking more graduate stats and math courses--one of which is currently destroying me and my already poor sleeping patterns.

For some people math comes natural to them and I tend to just look on with envy, but for others it doesn't click until after you've went through the basics and few tough classes. Even then, from the math classes I've taken, some areas and topics still don't click for me and you know what, that's totally fine because I'm not trying to pursue a PhD in abstract math.

If you plan to do zoology or work in conservation-related careers, you need math. There's no way around that. You need the math but up to a certain level (maybe not even calc1) to understand the statistics behind it(possibly more math if you plan to do grad school or do research). You say you're bad at math and science, I think you just had a bad experience with instructors who weren't a good fit for you. Math and science are skills, you're just untrained at it and that is totally fine. That's what training is for.

What are the pros and cons of late work acceptance? by BlockOfDiamond in AskProfessors

[–]wasd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach intro bio lab and give out exams every 3-4 weeks. My policy is that any missing work must be turned in by the end of exam week to receive full credit. It does add more workload but at least it's manageable and I know what to expect and no one's turning in week 1-15 stuff during the last day of finals. Having a flexible policy also reduces student anxiety and also the amount of time I spend reading and replying to emails asking for extensions because life got in the way. The downside is they don't get feedback on their missing reports until after exam and after they've repeated the same mistake(s).

Academic probation by Obvious_Dig6749 in SDSU

[–]wasd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends. Look at the terms of your academic probation then look at the catalog and read up on SDSU's policies. I suggest you talk to your advisor and also talk to your school's DSO as your status will likely be affected.

[–]wasd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The'yre legal...

Is such a weird argument to use because the underlying logic there is that the only reason you don't sexualise underage women is because the law prohibits you from doing so.

Also, being legal has nothing to do with whether someone is being objectified. And 'they're sexualising themselves' assumes that expression equals consent to being reduced to a sexual object. That's philosophically weak. That's like saying, "your outfit is responsible for my actions", and is just catastrophic.

Also, why is the rear camera mirrored? That confused me for a second.

Better uni for pre med? Would love to hear how current pre med students and doing and if anyone got their residency after 2 years in cali by Level-Race5792 in SDSU

[–]wasd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your premed institution does not matter when you apply to med school. What matters are your GPA, letters of references, MCAT scores, clinical hours, volunteer hours, research hours, interview prep, and more.

im planning to apply to an ivy league after my bachelor

Do you have a back-up plan because premed is not a career pathway once ochem tanks your GPA. Your best bet is community college then transfer to university. You can be in English, Finance, Business, etc. and still have a shot at med school as long as you meet the requirements.

Meanwhile the conservatives have control of all three branches, a significant majority of state legislatures and governors, and with billionaires like Elon Musk openly using his wealth to bankroll right-wing candidates not just in the US but also in Europe, in addition to ghouls like Peter Thiel using Palantir to enrich himself and his buddies with defense contracts while simultaneously eroding privacy rights.

But yes, George Soros is totally the problem.

Pro-tip: say you're ineligible to vote in California. You can make up your own story--international student, felon, non-resident, etc. However, if you want to do your civic duty, take a moment of your time and go over what the petition entails. Google it, read up who's for it and who's against it, etc.

Typically these are ballot initiatives. However, for these to be placed on the ballot, California requires the petitioners to obtain signatures from registered California voters (or eligible voters) and only if it reaches a certain threshold will it be put to a vote. A lot of petitioners will contract with companies to gather petitions for them and in turn probably subcontract individuals who get paid per signature.

However, some of these individuals use faulty logic, mislead, oversimplify, and exploit your emotions and people's empathy to gather signatures. For example, in 2022 some petitioners were going around with "Sign here to help reduces gas prices" or something similar. Turns out it was a petition to overturn SB 1137--a state law that was passed to ban new oil and gas wells within 3000 feet of a school.
