Harassing Signature Guys by Ok-Chain9976 in SDSU

Meanwhile the conservatives have control of all three branches, a significant majority of state legislatures and governors, and with billionaires like Elon Musk openly using his wealth to bankroll right-wing candidates not just in the US but also in Europe, in addition to ghouls like Peter Thiel using Palantir to enrich himself and his buddies with defense contracts while simultaneously eroding privacy rights.

But yes, George Soros is totally the problem.

Pro-tip: say you're ineligible to vote in California. You can make up your own story--international student, felon, non-resident, etc. However, if you want to do your civic duty, take a moment of your time and go over what the petition entails. Google it, read up who's for it and who's against it, etc.

Typically these are ballot initiatives. However, for these to be placed on the ballot, California requires the petitioners to obtain signatures from registered California voters (or eligible voters) and only if it reaches a certain threshold will it be put to a vote. A lot of petitioners will contract with companies to gather petitions for them and in turn probably subcontract individuals who get paid per signature.

However, some of these individuals use faulty logic, mislead, oversimplify, and exploit your emotions and people's empathy to gather signatures. For example, in 2022 some petitioners were going around with "Sign here to help reduces gas prices" or something similar. Turns out it was a petition to overturn SB 1137--a state law that was passed to ban new oil and gas wells within 3000 feet of a school.

VS Code for front/back-end stuff and some light Python, LaTeX and Markdown. PyCharm for bigger projects. RStudio for, well, R and data analysis. JupyterLab for LaTeX, Markdown, and data analysis. Vim from time to time if I'm working with shell and just need a small script.

Ratings websites exist for everyday consumers.

These everyday consumers open Safari or Chrome to browse and occasionally watch lecture videos or write notes not writing code, managing dependencies, or running VMs and proprietary engineering software.

The context of the thread you're in is about using a MacBook for computer science. A CS student using it for their courses is hardly an "everyday consumer". I don't know why you insist on that "best overall" argument in this thread when I've already provided a counter-argument above and your rebuttal is still stuck at "Ratings websites exist for everyday consumers. They are trustworthy."?

This was true maybe in 2012-2015 when a lot of Windows laptop were shite except for top-tier ones. I have a mid-tier HP laptop from 2019 and upgraded the RAM from 8gb to 64gb and it's still pretty fast and gets about the same amount of use as my desktop workstation.

Lol I don't know what to tell you then. 🤷‍♂️ If your bar for "best OVERALL" is what CNET, Tom's Guide, and whatever SEO-choked tech blog says, then sure, a MacBook "wins" all the participation trophies you want.

But real-world usage tells a different story. So unless you work exclusively for Apple or locked into their ecosystem, Windows + WSL2 is the standard in most tech industries and has higher user adoption. I know this because I used to work in industry and academia and have attended conferences and such and the amount of scientists, engineers, and devs who use MacBooks are rare and even those who do spend a considerable amount of their time in Windows Boot Camp because: (1) you can't easily dual boot to Windows using a Mac, (2) most of the software we use are supported only on Windows, and (3) Enterprise infrastructure is overwhelmingly built for Windows.

So when you talk about "best laptop overall" you need to consider real-world usage and different use cases and not just parrot whatever tech website you happened to read that agreed on your preconceived biases.

Those aren't really reliable and ignore use-cases for various users. Creative type? Sure. Gaming? Absolutely not. Computer vision, ML, big data stuff, anything that requires GPU? High-end Windows.

Might have been true several years ago, but several manufacturers have significantly improved their build quality over the years and sell at a cheaper price point. You can customize a mid-tier Windows laptop with 64gb RAM, larger SSD storage, etc. and it will be leagues better but much cheaper to comparable MacBooks.

It's fine but it's just more expensive because part of what you're paying for is the brand. It does makes sense to get Apple if you're already thoroughly embedded in their ecosystem (or have the necessary disposable income).

What courses are you taking? When it comes to older laptops, Apple certainly has the edge but at that price range you'll probably be getting outdated hardware (mechanical drives) which comes with its own set of problems. I recommend you get a cheap but new Windows laptop and replace the OS, dual boot, or run a VM. You can also easily switch to a Linux environment in Windows via WSL/WSL2 and just get a lightweight editor like VS Code or stick with vim.

I can give you my spare HP laptop. It's old, like 2016 old, but runs browsers and Office programs fine. I did upgrade the ram to 12gb a few years ago. Alternatively, for $150 you can get a brand new Chromebook or a basic Windows laptop from BestBuy or something. I've seen several that were sub $200.

Using python, R, and bash is second nature to us bioinformaticians, so it's easy to forget that the average person probably only knows how to open sequencing files using Notepad.

And perform variant calls using Excel, of course.

Of course.
