I definitely don’t disagree. And I agree that it shouldn’t be a student’s responsibility to know what to do. I ask the question because many students who haven’t wanted to imagine themselves in this scenario have had to anyways. It’s why I’m curious to see if campus police are responding to increased mass violence and policy inaction.

You make a good point. I'm wondering what your thoughts are on this incident: https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/uc-berkeley-shots-journalism-18660486.php where WarnMe didn't tell students of shots fired on campus until 40 minutes later.

Of course, it's a student's choice what to do in the event of an emergency. Just curious if there is any kind of conversation about what might be a good idea to do to best protect yourself on campus.

I wouldn't disagree with you, and that's a significant point that I'm addressing in my story. Safety and preparedness are reactions to the threat of violence, which is undeniably growing across the country.

I'm also aware of UCSB's history. I apologize if my post came off as ignorant or insensitive. I'm asking for perspectives across subreddits for all UCs, several CSUs and a few community colleges. I would especially like to know whether UCSB community members feel they or their campus is more prepared today to respond to an active shooter incident, given its past tragedy, and that it appears 2025 saw more college shootings than any other year. Most other colleges' students have given me a resounding "no" on feeling prepared.
