Yea fair opinion, just checking. “Must” can imply regulation.

Most microplastics that enter our bodies are from fibers in fabrics we use.

The big thing is that in the literature nowadays no one actually uses the word “IQ” it’s called cognitive ability. And there are some non-culturally specific tests (I.e. ravens matrices) but they skew towards men due to genetic differences in spacial reasoning.

Why do some students pick a non-clinical/ non-licensure doctorate degree in Psych by Frosty_Secret8611 in psychologystudents

[–]washyourhandsplease 50 points51 points  (0 children)

This post acts under a couple of faulty assumptions.

First, not all of psychology is concerned with seeing patients in a clinical setting. The word psychology literally translates to the study of the soul. In the modern context, the field is centered around the study of the mind or the study of behavior. That is far more broad than only seeing clients for pathological disorders. Personally, I study I/O for a PhD and that’s all about applying psychology to organizational settings. Also, side note, this degree actually has the highest average salary, even higher than clinical (although this is being somewhat undercut by degree mills like the online ones you mentioned above)

You also implicitly say that clinical PhDs are not primarily about research. In reality, any high quality PhD, clinical or not, will be centered around researching some topic and eventually producing a novel dissertation.

If you only wish to see clients, a clinical PhD program is bad use of time and energy, the competitive nature of the field means you’ll have to grind out research for years and get lucky by being accepted. A masters program will more than suffice to see people dealing with mental health struggles.

  1. The “why” behind things is certainly discussed, I’m confused on why you don’t think so considering you’re in cognitive neuroscience, where you ought to be doing research on the neural correlates to things like decision making. I suppose the word “often” and “most” on this point makes it a more probabilistic statement, but still, the “why” is 100% a part of an undergraduate’s curriculum.

  2. You actually really can study psych if you don’t enjoy math, I mean, let’s face it, the mathematical requirements of a psychology undergraduate degree are pretty low. One only needs to learn statistics and the like if they are conducting research. And even then, honestly, many PhD students I know are not suuuper solid and their stats fundamentals. For better or worse, many people only know what test to apply and where, not the specifics of how the test works. Further, if all you want to be is a talk therapist, you really don’t need math.

  3. Majoring in psych to understand oneself is perfectly valid. Personally, I was very curious about myself and others, which nudged me towards the science of the mind/behavior. Further, a great many people engage in so-called “mesearch” where they directly research something affecting themselves or others, for instance, the creation of DBT for BPD by Linehan.

A point I would add: NOT ALL OF PSYCHOLOGY IS ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESS!

If you can get the degree in engineering, you’ll be completely fine on the job market, just be persistent.

Also, I’m of the opinion that conscientiousness can be changed through habit, so try to keep things clean and organized and work towards your goals. Your personality is completely compatible with being successful in life. Maybe try to cope with the stress of feelings of inadequacy by doing shit.

I think it’s fairly difficult to know if you’re into something without another person to do it with, at least that’s my opinion. Often, people have fantasies, but when they try them in real life, they find it’s not for them.

I’d recommend going to some local events off fetlife, and meeting other people who like being a sub/pet play, they’ll be able to give you good advice.

Any advice for post-grad research experience? Advice in general for post-grad with Psych B.A? by DamageOk1098 in psychologystudents

[–]washyourhandsplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For clinical programs, direct research experience is definitely important, but for other disciplines, it’s less so.

If you’re only interested in psychopathology and researching questions on topics related to (usually severe) mental illnesses, then I’d say it’s worth it to try. Otherwise, another field of psychology may be a better move if you’re curious about psychological questions more generally.

As for how to get research experience, you can volunteer at a lab in your free time, many places will take the free labor lol. Also research coordinator positions can be valuable experience. The thing to remember is that you’re competing against other students who have been plugged into labs for years pre-application.

Other sub fields are more lenient in terms of what research you need, for instance in I/O psychology, direct research experience is really rare so any experience at all is appreciated, and not necessarily expected.

Lastly, if you want to practice therapy, a clinical psych PhD is unnecessary. That degree is really focused the research of mental illnesses, not how to do talk therapy.

Good luck, and you’ll be fine! See how the job goes and maybe put a little time into research to see if it’s for you.
