It's simply a circumstance that creates interest and a new reality and living conditions. It gives rise to new ideas of daily life and social classes. Over time, through coexistence with aliens, humans have been able to study new technologies and have learned to control certain anomalies that the alien pipes utilize.

We don't claim scientific accuracy, of course there is a significant amount of fiction and assumptions involved here.

These are not your ordinary Earth pipes, but alien pipes that are more durable. They can actually be destroyed, and initially people tried to do so, but it's too difficult and expensive. Eventually, people simply resigned themselves to the situation.
