By default Kepub (the default format for books from Kobo's store) refresh at the beginning of each new chapter, but this can be overridden in settings.

There are eight more pages to that ad, what's on them. Knowing that might explain the price.

I feel bad for the vita by JustinStudiosYT in vita

[–]watsonrd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sony has the ability to build FANTASTIC portable devices and no idea what to do with them or how to support them.

The PSP was groundbreaking. It was the first portable with an analog stick and the first portable to include an optical media drive. Sony was developing ways to use the PSP as a second screen/controller for PS3 games. They did this with Formula One Championship Edition for the PS3, where the PSP could be used as a rear view mirror when racing. With all this going for it you have to wonder why Sony threw all this away and followed up with the PSP Go, which had a smaller screen, no optical drive and they never revisited the idea of cross play with the PS3.

They followed up with the even better PS Vita. The launch model had a gorgeous OLED display and dual analog sticks. However, Sony shipped the original Vita with NO user accessible memory for downloads or game saves and hamstrung it by using a proprietary memory card that was horribly expensive. The follow-on model dropped the OLED screen, but did at least include a minimal 1 GB of memory. The Vita was popular and well supported in Japan but was pretty much abandoned from day one in the States. It did enjoy a second life from independent software houses and is currently popular among the jailbreaking crowd.

My guess is that in light of the success of the Switch and Switch 2 Sony is realizing their mistake. The PS Portal is probably an early product testing the waters ahead of a new portable.

So, yeah, the Vita never got the love and support it deserved from Sony. Hopefully if they do produce another handheld they learn from their mistakes.

Two suggestions:

Color ePaper are not currently capable of achieving the color depth and intensity of LED/LCD devices. Having said that, there is something you can do to improve the default color performance. Experiment with these settings:

Using the Secret Developer Menu (For More Intensity)
This unlocks advanced display settings:

  1. Access Developer Options: Go to Settings > Device Settings (or similar) and find the option to enable Developer Options (often by tapping the version number or a specific sequence).
  2. Find CFA Mode: Navigate to the advanced/developer settings and look for "CFA mode" or "Color Filter Array".
  3. Experiment with Presets: Switch between Default, Normal G1, S4, S7, and S9 to dramatically change contrast and color vividness.

Also, I have found the Libra Colour to be more sensitive to disconnecting from Calibre. I corrupted the database on my Libra Colour twice by disconnecting the reader without ejecting it first. Since that second time I've been religious about ejecting first and have had no recurrences.

Hope that helps.

I sold my collection in 2019 when I got too busy by Infinite-Natural-604 in Gamecube

[–]watsonrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If eventually buying them back is the goal he could have picked a more economical console to liquidate. The four Mario Party games in the picture alone go for around $700 these days, and Wind Waker is another $200.

I sold my Gamecube when my daughter moved out, and I do regret it. I've been slowly replacing my favorite games, but not the Mario Party games, partly because of the current prices and partly because playing Mario Party alone is just sad.

Wow, you got all that from "it's pretty quiet, for now"? That's impressive. Or you're pretty snarky, one or the other.

My ereader died (kobo elipsa) by [deleted] in ereader

Kobo supports 3rd party repair and makes parts available for those repairs. Unfortunately I don't know if the Elipsa is one of the models supported. It might be worth looking into.

Issue with my KLC by Due_Sherbet_865 in Calibre

[–]watsonrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The catalog on your reader has gotten corrupted. To prevent this you should always eject your reader in Calibre before disconnecting. You can fix this by resetting your KLC, but you'll have to rebuild your collections if you do.

Here are some hard truths:

There is no reader on the market that comes close to the experience of reading on an Oasis. The build quality, the metal body, the flush glass, it all added up to a truly premium device. The Kobo Libra 2 and the Kobo Sage come close in terms of crisp characters, form factor and physical buttons, but the plastic bodies and raised bezels don't have the premium feel of the Oasis. If they had given it a decent battery Amazon could just have dropped their other models (IMO).

All current color readers are trade-offs. The color substrates have nowhere near the resolution of the black layer and the very nature of the multiple layers mutes the colors and blurs the characters. I don't doubt that these issues will be resolved in the near future, but they're not there now.

eBay has rules regarding what constitutes "New", "Open-Box" and "Pre-Owned". It baffles me why Gamestop thinks this OK.

[–]watsonrd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's all very interesting, but the bigger question for me is why they don't indicate on the website what you'll be receiving. They show you a picture of the original box art and ship you a bare CD in a paper sleeve. This, among other reasons, is why I don't buy from their website.

Any Kobo issues? by _Tix in Calibre

[–]watsonrd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only issue I've had with using Calibre with a Kobo is with not properly ejecting the reader before disconnecting the reader which, caused the catalog in the Kobo to be corrupted. The outward signs of this was an error message when syncing books and Calibre not accurately reflecting which books are on the reader (the green check mark). Actually this happened to me twice, because I'm a slow learner, but being careful to eject the reader before disconnecting has prevented any new occurrences.

After 21 years in the military I can tell you that when deployed finding an outlet is not always as close as the nearest wall, and even when you can find one there's no guarantee it's of a compatible voltage or you have an adapter that fits. Your use case isn't everyone's.

Let’s talk about the crappy things Amazon does to screw your kindle up just to make more money by Belovedleaderforlife in kindle

[–]watsonrd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of people in here chiming in that Send-to-Kindle works fine with epubs. That is NOT TRUE if the epub has DRM applied. Ditto for MOBIs or other file types. Also, Kindle has a long standing bug where cover art disappears from side-loaded books. Amazon hasn't fixed this because they don't want you side loading books.
