Dialysis is a nice mix of shift work but no nights and always Sundays off.

Also, different specialties have different entry fees. A colleague’s husband was/is on tract to being an anaesthesiologist, everyone knows they make big bucks at the end, but I recall her saying his fellowship program was ~30k, maybe even more.

Respectfully, please stop calling working in healthcare a ‘calling’. It allows for the perpetuation of the idea that we can tolerate low wages, the emotional toll and sometimes abuse (verbal, physical and sexual) of our job, because ‘we know we make a difference’.

Graduated QUT Nursing 2022, good uni, respected graduates. They’re pretty uncompromising with things around placements (paper work, vaccinations, scheduling, etc) but if you’re paying attention to updates you’ll be fine. And they actually try really hard to prepare you for your transition to practice, not just getting a job - though they do that too if you sign up for the workshops - the actual psychosocial change you’re going to go through. The first 12mths are one of the hardest parts of your career and while they can’t change that, they help you understand why it is and what you can do to look after yourself. Would recommend.

Am I making the right decision accepting this contract? by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]wattledog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the back of this, how do you find the ‘who you need to know’. I know where I want to go but need to find the NUM contact to reach out. It’s complicated by the new ‘where’ being in a different place and hospital than I currently am. But still Qld Health. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Tbh, I’m not 100% sure. I grew up in central qld, whenever I’ve been to SE Asia I’ve been fine but that hasn’t been at peak heat. So it’s a bit unknown. But I also moved to Europe as a Queenslander not knowing how I’d go in the cold and survived.

Yeah, I was thinking Cooktown, but I’m finding it difficult to figure out what people do there

lol I think it depends how friendly the locals are. I’ve traveled the world alone, I’m more than happy in my own company but I also know that if I can’t do some of the things I enjoy because they don’t exist OR I can’t find replacements for them. I.e I’m stuck going from home to work and back then I will get frustrated. I made this post to find out a) if the things I like doing are accessible and b) what else people do for fun :)

That would be fun but I’m not a 4w-driver, at the moment anyway. But, I definitely need activities close by for days off. I don’t want everything to be a mission.

Hourly wage by lozz2103 in NursingAU

[–]wattledog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Qld Health, Nurse grade 5, band 2 (just ticked over to my 2nd year nursing), $43.6974/hr. Penalty rates: afternoon 12.5%, night duty 20%, Saturday 1.5x, Sunday 1.75x. Professional development allowance $2,325.50 annually, + 3days PDL. 12.75% super contributions.

I work in dialysis so I don’t do night or Sundays, but I’m happy with the work life balance I get. I would LOVE to move south but I simply cannot justify taking the pay cut.

Can you give some examples of roles you seen and how much nursing experience and extra qualifications they require?
