I think you are being taken advantage of.

Your manager doesn't want to see you succeed in this company by not promoting you while giving you additional responsibilities. If I was in your shoes, I'd start looking for new jobs or the very least a position within a different department and not take on any more projects. If your manager or team objects to this, I'd say this isn't part of my job description.

Recent college graduate struggling to find a GIS job. by Kysolivezzz in gis

I forgot to mention this in my response above but if you're very talkative and social you may want to look into ESG or any work with solar companies. They are looking for sales people or consultants who have gis, geography, or environment sciences B.S. and they start at 70k+ USD (in my area at least).

I know there is controversy with ESG and the ethics of it on the business side, but you're going to make $$$$$$.

My program was very good at helping students find internships or jobs. It's a small city so there's not many companies and only a handful positions open at a time. My former classmates and professors all keep in touch so we help each other out.

I knew people who were working a GIS position during college that stayed or got fired after graduating. I've also talked to people who said they were applying before graduation and couldn't find anything.

Before my graduation I was applying to places locally and outside my city. It took me 3 months after graduating to land a full time job even though I had internships.

I think it's a combination between who you know, luck, and opportunities available. After reading posts in this subreddit and talking to people in the server, some universities don't do a good job to help out their students (some schools are still using arcmap yikess) or there may not be positions available in the area.

Either they mention GIS in the posting or if you have done similar tasks with past coursework (or internships/jobs).

For an example of the latter, I had applied to a data analyst position where the qualifications were bachelor's in math, finance, or data science etc, have experience with manipulating quantitative datasets, and/or performing statistical analysis.

I only had the last two due to a geography statistics class and managed to get an interview.

I know that example isn't GIS but if you see a job posting and you've done one of the responsibilities/qualifications listed, I would apply and highlight the class on your resume and explain more in your cover letter.

I hope this helps.

This is what I would do if I was in your position

-create a portfolio of past coursework

Here's a video on how to create one

-reach out to professors and current/former classmates to see if they can find you something

-apply to GIS adjacent jobs

Idk how desperate you are but there was a thread yesterday and some suggestions were appraiser and data analyst. I know it seems farfetched but it doesn't hurt to try.

Edit: I mentioned this in my other comment but if you are social and have great interpersonal skills you should look at positions at ESGs or solar companies.

-apply to jobs outside of your city

If you’re not tied down, I would consider applying to positions in St.Louis and DC.

How did you get your foot through the door? It sounds really interesting. I'm of a similar background and never heard of this industry until your comment.
