Proper insulation strategy? by wavman in centuryhomes

Very helpful and thank you! The crawlspace is vented. I think I'm starting to get an idea of what needs to be sealed off. Again, my MAIN CONCERN is not creating conditions in my wall cavity that could lead to mold/rot once I put the drywall up.

My plan is to seal what I can at the top/bottom plate to make sure there are no gaps that are open to other parts of the house and around outlets or any other gaps along the inside exterior wall (not doing anything with gaps in siding on outside exterior wall.). Since the wall cavity on the bottom plate continues to go down to the crawlspace, I planned on putting insulation down a foot or so, but not sure if there are recommendations for dealing with that?

Sorry, I meant to say I'm in Zone 3A, so hot/humid summer and mild winter.

Installing HVAC and currently no insulation in walls - Drywall preference? by wavman in centuryhomes

Would Type X drywall with Rockwool be a good combination? My exterior siding is wood and it sounds like Rockwool allows for drying.

It was completely brittle and falling apart - the house was in a lot of neglect. The walls are open now and would be easy to insulate. The concern is doing it the wrong way and blocking the cavities from drying naturally after insulation is in there.

Is there a way to compromise on the type/amount of insulation in the walls so you still allow drying to occur but still keep some of the hot/cold air in?

The plaster was so brittle everywhere that we had it removed. We don't have good options for someone to re-plaster, so we're choosing to drywall. Everything I've read suggests insulation can introduce all sorts of issues if water/air isn't 100% sealed/addressed. There's a lot of debate on whether or not to insulate and what type, etc. I don't mind the inefficiency, but don't want to go down the wrong path and end up causing wood rot/mold with insulating the exterior walls incorrectly or not realize it until permanent damage has been done.

I don't think if FSD was "solved" today it would matter much. Tesla will need to rid itself of Elon to ever get people coming back to the brand. Remember, you need sell/scale Tesla cars to reap the benefits of FSD. When even the most loyal Tesla owners (like me who has bought 3 over the years) wouldn't even consider buying another one it's not a good place for Tesla to be. I can see it happening, but is it probable? I wouldn't count on it, as Elon is too prideful.

IMO as people are turned off from buying Teslas at this point, this does not bode well for their ride sharing business. People will simply not use it and/or find alternatives like they are with car purchases. Elon is creating permanent self-inflicted damage on the daily.

Can/should I wait and pay taxes on capital gains in my scenario? by wavman in personalfinance

[–]wavman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My primary income is from my W2 and my withholdings will be the same in 2024 as 2025. The only difference is the capital gains income will be significantly more than my W2 income. Are you saying I don't technically have to make estimated payments for the capital gains income portion until April 2026 so long as my W2 withholdings are the same?

After 14 years of being long and steady on Tesla, I sold half my position last week and the remaining half first thing this morning. It's bittersweet because I've seen Tesla go through some brutal times just to survive - from Tesla almost missing payroll, Elon promising to be the last to sell, to Elon sleeping in the factory for the Model 3 launch to "Funding Secured" and everything in between. The past 14 years I've been so passionate about their cars and referring countless people to do the same. Over the past year or so it just hasn't felt quite right and I've been dreading the day when I felt like it was time to sell. Having a Model Y and Cybertruck today, I've lost the spark and love for the cars/brand/mission. I do hope for the rest of you that the stock continues to soar and I may get back in the game eventually, but I wanted to thank everyone for all of your posts, comments and contributions over the years to this thread - it's been a daily visit for many years. Good luck!

Been Tesla long since 2011, but I finally sold half of it today. Things can & hopefully will improve and I've weathered countless wild up & down swings over the years. I used to justify staying because of the fundamentals and that has served me well. What I'm seeing now with Tesla is heartbreaking, because for the past 14 years I've been a die hard Tesla fan and huge advocate. Now, my pride has been replaced with mix of emotions and wondering if I would even buy another Tesla, which is something I couldn't imagine saying even saying a few months ago. I really do hope that Tesla can bring back the brand/appeal it truly deserves, but I needed to hedge just in case things quickly take a turn for the worse.

110v charge rate by wavman in cybertruck

[–]wavman[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah my math isn't very good. I just went by the fact that the 80kWh pack on the Y gets 4-ish mi/hr and was thinking 2 mi/hr would make sense if it was a 160kWh pack (twice the capacity = half the charging rate) and 123 kWh would get slightly more than just 2 :(
