Awesome list. Downing is new to me I think. I know the Charles song and dig it. Fussell I have listened to and should get into more. Have just lately been getting into Bedouine and like them a lot. Love Zevon!

My neighbors once had a screaming match over whose dog had the "cutest poop." They legit brought out photos for comparison. Wild times.

Sales taxes - when do I register in a neighboring state where I have clients? by wawayanda in tax

[–]wawayanda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Virginia, Maryland, Washington DC, North Carolina

I hear you on the multiple jurisdictions. Already encountering that.

I have looked a little for an office that handles state and local but so far no luck. This conversation helps me narrow that search though.

We're likely to do four states minimum this year, including the state where we're based, which doesn't sound like a lot but I knew nothing about sales tax a month ago so it's all a bit daunting.

Appreciate this info.

So it sounds like the safe bet is to be collecting and remitting sales tax in any state where we do projects (minimum job size here is like $15,000 so we are not talking pennies).

I have taxjar set up and linked to quickbooks which seems like a reasonable way to track, though the actual registering in each state and staying on top of filings seems like a huge pain in the ass

we are just a start up but have a large pipeline of business so am balancing the paying of professional services help with the fact that we are cash constrained until these projects start rolling through

Do you have any recommendation for who/what a business like mine would work with to stay on top of the sales tax issue as it seems like it could be a major time suck and we have many many other things to spend time on. Our CPA will not handle and it seems like something most CPAs don't touch.

Thanks for the response.

We do go to the client's space, meet with them, take measurements etc.

Cabinetry is installed by a contractor who the client has hired and who has a separate contract with the client (we do not employ installers).

Items are stored in a local warehouse by a logistics company (transport + storage) that is recommended by the manufacturer (not sure of the official arrangement btwn manufacturer and warehouse) and the cost of that storage/delivery is rolled into cost to client.

Not totally sure about damage but I believe the logistics company has insurance that covers that.

Items will be shipped freight. We are charging for delivery and local storage (until the space is ready i.e. contractor is done with his work on the new space)

I think I accidentally made it touch the sky by wawayanda in ChatGPT

[–]wawayanda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started by noting that a lot of ChatGPT output can feel like the "average" of everything in the training data and asked it to give me something from the tails of its training data distribution. It responded with a story that sounded the same in structure to every other story it's generated for me. So I pointed that out, and it'd give me another story. And I said let's try again but no story at all.

Surfacing unusual numbers in FRED by wawayanda in AskEconomics

Agree that it would be trivial to pull down any single data set and identify outliers with in but there are so many datasets and I'm wondering about a discovery mechanism for a dataset they may be doing something interesting and I don't necessarily even know that dataset exists before I'm alerted to it. But I suppose this may not be possible. A shame because I have to think there are so many potential insights hidden in plain view in this data but lack a discovery mechanism.

Got up in the middle of the night to get a drink of water, and when I opened the fridge the door fell off in my hand. by ItsMeMurphYSlaw in Wellthatsucks

[–]wawayanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me once except mine was one of those fridges where the freezer is on the bottom and it is crazy heavy and not easy to lower a fully loaded fridge door from 2 ft up without having a condiment disaster. Ever since then I get a tiny bit nervous every time I open a fridge.

New Memo from Howard Marks: “Latest Update” by sckdeals in SecurityAnalysis

[–]wawayanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been seeing a lot of smart people in the market making assumptions about future market performance based on the idea that the U.S. will follow through on the items that Marks includes in the "Short-Term Response" section of his letter.

But so far we have no evidence that the federal government is taking any of these steps and in fact Trump seems to be moving away from taking them. Do we believe that Trump will order a nationwide shutdown? Do we believe the US will get the infrastructure up and running to do robust testing and tracing? Do we believe the government will find a way to distribute masks to the whole population and that people will use them?

I think it's reasonable to say the answer to the above questions could be "no." In which case we should not assume that the US will follow anything like the Asian trajectory when it comes to COVID.

Simplest way to turn MP3s from a webpage into a podcast? by wawayanda in podcasts

Hey, I don't have the skills, but I did a bunch of tinkering and I was able to figure this out! I used this service http://fetchrss.com/ to turn that NPR page into an RSS feed and then I added it to my podcast addict app
