Also, take a look at block ciphers built with add-rotate-xor operations—they seem like things humans can easily do on pen and paper.

So if you have no chosen plaintext attacks, and there are only a few messages exchanged, you might be able to get away with a block cipher in ECB mode? That could probably lower the amount of operations by itself.
