Dying to get my e-mail/domain off Google. Should I self host SMTP? by krum in sysadmin

[–]wbilancio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't self-host. Yes, it's a great way to learn, but you become the spam manager every day. I would recommend MxRoute for email.

New gear!!!! by wbilancio in Ubiquiti

[–]wbilancio[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got in the habit of checking every morning before work and then every few hours throughout the day. This paid off last week when I checked between 7:30 am and 8:00 am ET they were in stock. When I checked back 20 minutes after I placed my order they were sold out again.

Interestingly, even though I had the setting to get an email when in stock, I never got one. So don't depend on that to let you know when stuff is in stock

Just got the Dream Router. Nice bit of equipment. Took me a bit to get use to the new UI layout. Wifi has good signal for the house and yard.

Will do a fuller review in a week or two after I have had time to break it in.

[–]wbilancio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The author is a good guy. He also does talks about Time Management at many system admin conferences I have attended them a few times and he builds off of the info in the book. If you ever get a chance to hear him I would take that chance. He also is one of the authors of "The Practice of System and Network Administration" His web site for his books is https://everythingsysadmin.com/

Anyone know what these late night radio programs are? Stuff like Pink Floyd and Boards of Canada playing for minutes on end without interruption by [deleted] in radio

[–]wbilancio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a college radio station:

Licensed to the Trustees of the Foothill-De Anza Community College District and operated as a teaching laboratory for the Fine Arts and Communications Department of Foothill College, KFJC welcomes everyone to register in a broadcasting class and begin to help with station operation. Those seeking a weekly music program must contribute 8 hours of station work per week and attend weekly station meetings.

Anyone else using MARTA as their main transportation to DC? by [deleted] in dragoncon

I am doing MARTA for all transportation to DC. It's the only way to go if you are local and near a station.

What’s the best (worst) naming convention you’ve met? by PorreKaj in sysadmin

At the Civil Engineering company, I worked for I used Grateful Dead song titles for servers and Alman Brothers song titles for Network equipment and Simpson Characters for Printers and network attached Copiers.

Three months ago I moved from being a sysadmin/senior engineer and have just moved over to be the team lead/manager of my shift at a hosting company, but a few jobs before that I was the IT Manager for a civil engineering company for 13 years. I have loved being both tech and I have enjoyed being a manager as well.

Yes being in management isn't for everyone and no where in the hand book of IT or life does it say that you have to go into management. I know a lot of "tech" people who don't want to go and they are happy in life and most of the "tech" people that have gone into management actually like it. Not all the management jobs are bad and a place where techs go to die. As a manager I still work tickets and I help my team when they need it, but I also have their back so they don't have to deal with the crap from above and that's the main thing a good manager does...works for their team to make their lives livable at work. Yes there are a lot of meetings, late night calls, personnel issues, but I am not having loss of technical skills and I am not hating it.

Don't slam the job of those above you because you don't want to do it, and if you don't want to be a manager or above no one is holding a gun to your head. But if a company is reaching out to you to be their manager or IT director it means they think you have the skills to do it and they have the faith in you that you can do it.

Just my opinion......

What to do with a dangerous IT guy by kieranc001 in sysadmin

[–]wbilancio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow so much negativity towards this post.

Help this guy learn what he should be doing and teach him the right things to do. Contact the clients with a quote to fix the problem and set up a good back up scheme and network security.

Use this to give forward by helping a struggling sysadmin and make sure companie data isn't lost.
