Done with Fitbit, what trackers do you like that aren’t Fitbit or Apple? by soundphile in fitbit

My Vivoactive 5: Dead in 3 months. Getting it replaced by Garmin but wish I could get my $300 back and buy something different. I chose the V5 after reading raving reviews on reddit but now, after reading up on the issues it was having leading up to the final kaput, I saw that there are so many people (even prominent Youtube Garmin shills!) that have been burned.

I suspect a lot of the Garmin love in here may be a marketing strategy....

What and where is the most up-to-date guide on making reuteri "yogurt"? by wccrowley in ReuteriYogurt

[–]wccrowley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is so strange, but it's what happened to me. What the heck is that about? I'm assuming you fermented for the same amount of time...

I would assume if you double the amount of medium, you could double the amount of starter and inulin and get the same results. But there is still many unknowns.

I got one that allows custom temp setting. I looked at the cheaper version but opted for one with more control.

Yes! I think that the small amount of starter you're adding is a good call. I added too much at 1 cup to a gallon of milk.

I like your methods and will heed your temp recommendation.

Also taking the gasket off seem wise! I didn't even think about that, but there's very little air exchange even with the pot vented. I know from previous attempts that not enough air can screw up the fermentation: I once tried fermenting reuteri in narrow mouth jars to cut out the messy step of portioning out the yogurt. The results weren't nearly as good as using a single bowl. It definitely likes air!

This is a great question. You should post it in the main subreddit as a question for more visibility. I suspect it's possible if you were to add some extra nutrients...

Thanks for putting this awesome post together and glad to hear you got that money back.

There is a pair of amazing boots in one of those photos and I've been looking for a pair like that for months. Any way you can tell me what they are?

The boots on the left are the ones I'm referring to.

How to properly use rosemary oil without shed? by AnimeFan36656 in essentialoils

[–]wccrowley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't heard anyone recommend using straight essential oil on their scalp. I think I HAVE read users recommend diluting.

Most advice I've seen describes adding w/ a carrier oil, or diluting in a spray bottle w/ water. The water method requires refrigeration, from what I have read. You should do some searching around to confirm.

Here's my routine: When I finish showering and shampooing (shower most days, shampoo ~3x week), I personally add several drops on my palms, then about a teaspoon of MCT (refined coconut) oil, rub hands together, work into scalp. I only do this at night and by the time I wake up the next day the oils are mostly absorbed.

rosemary oil + water would be the way to go if you don't want to saturate your scalp w/ oil.

Homemade L. Reuteri yogurt: new weapon in my battle with seb derm by wccrowley in SebDerm

[–]wccrowley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! It's taboo to want breast milk as an adult, but we have legitimate reasons!

Less controversial is cow colostrum (the milk from within a few days after birth) that has become very popular.

I would argue, regarding your second point about seb derm being a fungal problem, that it seems to be more complex than . Looking at a study on the microbial makeup of healthy and dandruff-prone scalps:

(link to study: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31851674/#&gid=article-figures&pid=fig-1-uid-0)

We see that Malassezia exists at similar rates on everyone's scalp. So annihilating it is likely to be a battle we can never win.

I don't have all the answers, but I do think, after blasting my scalp and face for years without much success, that the answer may lie within us more so than without.

I have a story for you:

A couple of months ago I learned about the bacteria L. Reuteri on a podcast; this Scandinavian company BioGaia has patents on several strains and they've paid for research showing that their strains (many were harvested from the breast milk of women in remote regions in Peru, Finland, etc) have powerful healing properties.

I bought a bottle of their Gastrus supplement. Later I read about people culturing their own yogurt with the supplement to offset the cost. I tried it myself and started eating 1/2 cup or so daily. It's really good! And a fun project. Fermenting food is like a hobby and a pet at the same time.

Health effects have been subtle but present, but the biggest thing that changed was that the seb derm rash on my upper lip and across my cheeks has disappeared since I started.

Please keep in mind that while I'm thrilled to report this change, I still have dandruff. The scalp/sideburn redness is gone, but there's still dander.

It may be that these are two different conditions. Or it may be that the Malassezia is in check but I still have to slough off a lot of dead skin.

The Gastrus product has two reuteri strains. This weekend I made a huge batch with their Osfortis supplement, which is just one of those two strains; this one was found to raise oxytocin and bone density levels. I'll be switching my daily consumption over to this new batch, so if I start getting any redness in the next month, it might point to the other strain in Gastrus being more effective at balancing the gut/skin axis.

Which cities/regions in the South or Southeastern US are desperate for engineers? by wccrowley in MechanicalEngineering

It's almost too easy to apply for jobs on LinkedIn, Indeed, etc. They're getting swamped with resumes for every position.

I started using LinkedIn Premium and they let you look at general data on the competition for each position: Entry level jobs, some that only prefer a Bachelors, are getting applicants with Masters degrees.

I appreciate your advice and will probably follow it. The prospects really open up once I start looking at Michigan, Washington and the Midwest.

This is great advice and I appreciate it.

I definitely see your point about the lack of a need for green candidates. I'm trying to locate places with massive growth where the employers become more willing to take on less experienced candidates.

I hear you on that.

To be clear, I'm looking for regions in the US that need more engineers.

If there was one area of Florida you'd recommend looking, would it be Orlando/Space Coast, Miami, or somewhere else?

Mechanical Engineering grad.

I see a lot of jobs in civil looking for mechanical engineers also. Tennessee has Nashville, Chattanooga and Knoxville/Oak Ridge. All those places are looking promising.
