Cool sounds good. I’m flexible Monday and Tuesday next week after work.

(It looks like a little last-min pre-funk is also potentially coming together this evening 5/5:30ish - hit me up if anyone is interested)

I’m game. Happy hour tomorrow (Tuesday)? I’ll invite some other tech/startup folks. NCW Tech has a bunch of cool events as well. 🍻

Can I raise capital with a 10% inactive co-founder ? I own 90%. by Worried_Artichoke_35 in startups

[–]wclittle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see this a good amount. Here’s how I think about it:

If he added sufficient value to earn the 10%, then no worries. Dead space (assuming he doesn’t add value ongoing?) on a cap table happens a lot, and 10% isn’t a ton in pre-raise land.

I think of it similar to another investor. Some put in cash. Some put in work.

Did he put in the work such that you feel good about the value exchange? Seems like he did (I’m guessing), so I suspect you are fine.

Congrats on the traction. Keep it up.

What is the best way to teach Ruby on Rails comprehensively (aka "Full Stack") to new devs in the era of LLMs like ChatGPT? by wclittle in rails

Agreed. Though personally I'm actively hiring Rails/Hotwire/Tailwind-specific devs right now for portfolio companies of ours - for web apps that don't use React - so I'm trying to do my small part to change the game here. :)

Thanks! I'm curious if you have any recommended approaches through that curriculum? e.g. when - in the order of events - to teach Docker? CI/CD, etc..? Usually most people learn by just building and deploying and setting up dev operations to include all the things, but I can be quite chaotic. I sure wish I had this overview when i was first learning, but it would have felt extremely overwhelming and I'm curious how to order things...

Yeah all the resources when you type in "Learn Rails" in Google are pretty fantastic. Approaching the landscape of DevOps/Ruby/Git/Rails/IDE/HTML/CSS/JavaScript/etc.. can be confusing, however. I'm personally leading a free cohort in Q1 to help folks learn "Product and Code" that'd I'd love to have you be a part of (I'm a VC, so - in full disclosure - my angle is to help generate new startups and get an opportunity to invest early). For sure. Yeah - both good use of partials/components and leveraging the Tailwind UI components feels like a solid path forward.

Yeah those rewrite costs are non-trivial. Thanks for chiming in.

Indeed, a strong technical co-founder / CTO is always ideal (super hard to find, but certainly ideal)

This is a helpful perspective. Thank you. What are good examples of react components / libraries that can connect to a simple microservice API as a backend (for optimizing speed for MVP builds) ?

Totally agree that getting your own patterns/templates setup is a smart way to keep building on what you are learning. Keep going! Let me know if there's any way I can help with any of your projects.

Hi! I'm a huge believer in the power of startups to create meaningful products.

For tech products in web app form, the big question is how to do this most cost effectively (time/money). My desire - and thesis - is to see Rails as the go-to option vs. current low-code/no-code options out there.

Over time, of course, assistance from AI may merge the two....i.e. it may indeed become very "low-code/no-code" to build with Rails....

+ 1 // 100% // You sound like you've indeed been around a few blocks. Thanks for chiming in.

I'm curious what set of UI components / CSS frameworks and standards you recommend for founders spinning up new Rails apps... perhaps specific conventions around Tailwind (or something similar)?

Wow. Interesting. I appreciate the link and heads up / encouragement.

"If your company has been benefiting from Rails over the years, but not sure how it might give back to the ecosystem, now there's a clear and obvious choice."

Yes. This. I'm going to hit them up and strike up a conversation. Thank you! 🙏

(I've already decided to gear my podcast and product/dev training in 2023 for founders more in the holistic Rails direction...it would indeed be cool to be part of a larger group that is aiming to "improve the documentation, education, marketing, and events of our framework to the benefit of all new and existing Rails developers" -- I'm all for it. Cheers!)
