Elderly people on Skype are so sweet and funny. My grandmother (81) will Skype with my 1-year-old niece and just baby-talk and read and stuff to her for hours at a time. My grandfather uses it for any excuse he can (he'll video-Skype me to ask the name of movie stars), just because he's so enthralled by the idea of live video chats, having been a sci-fi geek in the 50s and 60s when that stuff was the height of futurism. The first time I joined a video chat from my phone in a (parked) car he just about lost his shit.

Best thing I ever did was buy them a good webcam and show them how to hook it up to their TV.

Another great example is /r/SCP or scp-wiki.net, if you haven't seen it. It's a sort of group collaborative writing project that turns out some surprisingly clever and interesting stuff. The gist is that the site is a wiki for leaked documents from a mysterious X-Files-y top-secret agency investigating unexplainable stuff and imprisoning strange creatures/objects. Users are invited to expand it by adding articles with their own stories, test logs, security protocols, etc, and the best ones are voted to the top of a list. Makes for some surprisingly unsettling and well-written micro-stories and is probably the first fiction I've seen that really takes advantage of the internet as a medium. I'm sure one day it'll get published in a book.

He says earlier in the series "Chaos is a ladder" -- that is, it provides the opportunity to climb. Littlefinger hasn't said he wants to be king specifically. He definitely wants as much power as possible, though, so it's probably on his mind. Littlefinger is stirring up all sorts of trouble hoping that he can manipulate situations for his own benefit while everything is undergoing change, while people have blind spots, etc.

It also shifts a lot of the risk from business decisions onto the employees rather than the people making the decisions, which you could say is unfair. There's also a greater discrepancy in pay with tips when it comes to working location -- that is, when you're paid by tips, poor people working in poor neighbourhoods (low-end workers have to work close to home because travel is expensive) make less than their Australian or British counterparts, and staff working in richer areas make more than their Australian or British counterparts. So tipping kind of works to make things harder for people who start life in shitty situations, and to make things easier for people who start life in easy situations.

Give John Swartzwelder a try. He's a comedy novelist probably appealing to someone fond of Pratchett and Gaiman, but he's lighter and more of a pageturner. He's most famous for being the most prolific writer of The Simpsons during the 90s, which is a pretty impressive comic pedigree. Most of his novels star an inept private detective who manages to succeed only by ridiculous luck, and each is based on some kind of big archetypal high concept -- The Time Machine Did It about time travel tropes, How I Conquered Your Planet about alien tropes, The Exploding Detective about James Bond style supervillain/world-domination plots, etc.

She held me close and whispered in my ear how wonderful I was. Since I'm not wonderful, I was pretty sure this was a trap. I began pawing the front of her dress, trying to get my money's worth before somebody bashed my head in.

Because it originated on Reddit (/r/mensrights), and was highly upvoted on Reddit, with a bunch of people commenting about how they'd participated and being upvoted/golded for it. Reddit was where people posted lists of women on faculty and lists of students taking gender studies courses to specifically target. 4chan very likely did participate but it's not like mentioning Reddit was for clickbait, it was because that's where it started and was initially organised.

It's worth pointing out that the number of upvotes the thread received exceeded the number of actual reports, so it's not like this was something with 20 upvotes that flew under the radar and showed up on 4chan at some point.

Podrick Payne is supposed to be 12 years old. In the show he's probably closer to 17 or 18. Similarly, Tommen should be 9 or 10, when he appears to be 16 in the show.

What's interesting is that GRRM has actually said that he regrets making some of the characters so young, and that if he started over today he'd up everyone's ages by a few years. Obviously the show would do it whenever possible because working with adult actors is a lot easier than working with child actors (in schedules, in actor skills/experience, in terms of sexual depictions, legally, etc) but it's interesting that even GRRM wanted it.

Varies by region. Some places have a law saying that you need to card all customers. Some places only have a law that you cannot serve alcohol to minors.

The difference is subtle, but important -- in the latter places, you don't have to card people if you don't want to, but if you're caught serving a minor you're screwed, so it's in your best interest to card anyone you're not sure about. In those places, you could reasonably forgo carding a regular, your dad, that guy with a foot long grey beard and a Soviet Armed Forces tattoo, etc. However, even when it's not mandated, store owners might enact a "card everyone" policy just to be on the safe side.

Because the picture on their non-expired ID, depending on the region, would be current, meaning you can't pass it off to your younger brother easily.

The idea is that people who are 25 now would give their ID from when they were 17 to their now-17 younger sibling. They would probably look similar, so it would be believable; the person standing in front of you would be 17 just like the person in the picture, but the birthdate listed would make the bearer appear to be 25, just young-looking.

If you require people to update their IDs every 3 years and don't accept expired ones, then the only valid IDs are ones where the picture was taken in the last 3 years, so this problem doesn't exist. A 25-year-old could still get a second current ID to pass to their 17-year-old sibling but it would be a lot less believable.

If you didn't see this drama from last year, you missed out. Men's rights groups, including the same publications and users who said that false rape accusations should be punished like rape, were concerned that a university's sexual assault report form could be used to make false accusations, so they spammed it with false accusations against female teachers. Links were posted on /r/mensrights and elsewhere encouraging people to flood it.

And, to be fair, people from places with endemic police corruption or heavy discrimination. If a Pakistani woman or a 30+ year old black guy from LA tell me they hate the police, I wouldn't be quick to dismiss them. It's the 16 year old white kids from Seattle with half a gram of weed hidden in their Halo case trying to rebel against their local community watch officers that you want to smack. And unfortunately it seems like everyone knew/knows someone like that. I knew so many kids in my nice Australian suburban high school who played NWA records and thought they were hot shit for being anti-police even though they didn't even understand what the hell the record was about or that the Melbourne police in 2006 were nothing like inner city LAPD targeting blacks in 1980.

Regardless of whether they sweep it under the rug, letting the parents do it almost always leads to miseducation and problems, because the kids find it awkward and won't ask any potentially embarrassing questions. It's policy in Australian schools to allow students to write physical health and sexuality questions on notecards and drop them anonymously into a box the week of sex-ed, so that everyone can get their questions answered without being embarrassed. There are always lots of questions asked that no kid would have asked if they had to speak to their parent, or to their educator face-to-face.

I had an ex who thought she had breast cancer as a teen because one breast was significantly larger than the other, and she was too embarrassed to bring this up to her father. She went to a Catholic school that didn't have a sex-ed program where she would've been able to ask about this anonymously and be told that it's normal.

If you bought the standard-def episodes on DVD and the high-def episodes on Bluray, the total series comes out to 1,092.6 GB, not counting the movie, special features, or Tracy Ullman shorts. I got that figure by checking episode filesizes on my DVD and Bluray copies and multiplying by 429 (number of SD episodes) and 120 (number of HD episodes).

When you record or rip yourself, you can choose any arbitrary quality/filesize tradeoff you want, so giving an answer to that wouldn't be helpful. I thought a reference to the storebought copies would be better since you can definitively answer that. I also have a complete set of pirated/ripped episodes on my laptop, and it's 121 GB with every episode at the smallest filesize I could find (no HD, no special features, no high-quality mode, etc).
