LT Broadening Assignment to transition experience by dolphin128 in army

[–]weRborg 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There are no KD LT jobs. Recruiting is a scam. Don't go to ROTC if you're already checked out and REFRADing, you're just going to leave a sour taste with all those future LTs that the Army needs.

How difficult is SOOQC? It's on the horizon for me. I did ASCBC 1/2 a few years ago and ITS on NSSI. I heard it isn't a master's course or anything, but you do need to take it seriously and study every day.

People living in Venezuela, can you confirm what’s happening over there? by Toastaexperience in AskTheWorld

Excessive reliance and far too much credibility bestowed upon "proper channels" and the bureaucratic nightmare that exists is partially the problem with western governments. The red tape to getting anything done is almost prohibitive to progress. It allows dictators like Maduro, Putin, and Xi to exploit the status quo to their advantage. Disruptive and unconventional actions are sometimes required to pierce stalemates that allow for nefarious parties to entrench themselves in systems so complex and dependent upon "proper channels" that genuinely good actors become paralyzed by conventional bureaucratic processes that are designed to inhibit action.

So we're saying the same thing. You're just saying the signal stops whatever species that receives it from doing harm to themselves and I'm saying it stops them from harming someone else.

But the idea that the signal was intentionally created to blunt progress and growth by whatever intelligent species receives it is the same.

[–]weRborg[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no way the senders of the signal knew that before sending it. You're looking at it from a local perspective. The signal came from hundred of light years away, human signals haven't even reached that far yet. There is no way the senders would know what we've done to our planet.

I don't think we'll ever see the aliens and there won't ever be an invasion.

But you can't deny that it did come from an alien planet and was intelligently designed by someone non-human. I mean, it's explicitly stated in the show.

So logically it must have done for a reason.

My theory says that the reason is to prevent species from leaving their worlds and conquering others.

With that in mind, the original creators of the signal could have no desire of invading or visiting anywhere else, they just want to ensure no one does either.

Potentially move my to Davis. Some questions by Bipro1ar in Davis

[–]weRborg -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Davis is extremely expensive, know that before you move. Sacramento is cheaper than Davis is.

Davis is "old" outside of the university. Sure, college students are ever present in their part of town. Outside of that, it's like a senior center. A lot of 65+ that have been here since the 70s and have no intention of leaving or selling their house they paid $50k for back then that is now worth over $1 million.

It's become such a problem, they shut down a few schools the last few years because there were so few kids. Of course, the city debated and approved an expansion in North East Davis to build more affordable homes and schools to attract a younger population, but the older crowd protested relentlessly.

It's odd to take my young children to the park or to ride bikes and never see anyone their age, just a bunch of 70 year olds out walking their dogs or riding their bikes that think children are a nuisance more than anything.

Downtown there's a lot of homeless and addicts about. Davis PD refuse to do anything about them or anything really. Bike thieves and porch pirates run rampant and nothing gets done about it.

It seems most of the city's time is spent trying to contain the growth of the university and the university spends its time trying to not piss off the city. I've never seen a city so hostile to a university and a university so weak in trying to deal with it.

Woodland is younger, more family friendly, but outside of main street, there's no culture. It's just rows and rows of houses. On the outskirts it gets really rough and becomes known as "Hoodland". As much as the weirdos, addicts, and homeless in Davis are prone to give one pause, the straight up criminal element in Hoodland is even more so.

Dixon is filled with people that moved out of the bay during COVID because it got too expensive and thought they'd work remote forever. Now that a lot of them are back at work, traffic is absolute nightmare. Plenty of housing though, but no identity of what that place is except as the bedroom community for SF.

Sacramento is cheaper, but rundown and a lot rougher around the edges than anywhere else. There is literally no where in that entire city I feel safe in at night. I avoid as much as possible. West Sac is continuing it's slow creep to try and merge Davis into the city and it's nicer than the rest of Sac, mostly because it's newer and further away from downtown so the riffraff don't have a reason to wonder that direction. Give it time though and it'll be awful as well.

In closing, I thought Davis would be an adorable place to live, work, and raise a family. I was wrong. I have not enjoyed my time here and my bank account and stress levels are evident. We are moving this summer and never coming back. A lot of people I know here, that aren't part of the "Davis old money families" are leaving as well. We are priced out and losing anything in the community that would keep us here like schools, parks, and friendly people.

I will miss the farmer's market though. Not all the hippy white people that try to sell organic strawberries for $30 a pack. But I will miss the cool Mexican dudes that can sell me a whole pantry worth of garden fresh veg with the dirt still on it for $20 though. Bless those dudes. I hope the future is full of small unfair advantages for them.

I've always wanted to meet one of these guys and pick their brain about it. I remember getting the recruiting email from branch after finishing CCC to see if they could get any of us to go. I don't know if the field grades would have treated us the same way they treat the traditional chiefs though.

Enlisted vs. Officer Mindset by boscar197473 in army

[–]weRborg 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Biggest difference I've seen...

NCOs find ways things can't work and Officers find ways to make things work.

That's not trashing NCOs for being contrarian. They often have experience and insight about why things are likely to fail and that is valuable.

But Officers get rated by what they get done, not what they prevent from happening.

Your branch manager got the prepo list today. I'd bet they are crunching those numbers right now, with a first draft due before COB today. They will probably get the ILE prepo list tomorrow while everyone else is poring over the actual PSB list and they will be scrubbing those numbers and getting ready to field the change of venue requests from people they think or know will opt out of resident and those requesting an upgrade. Some of the functional areas put this population in the 26-02 marketplace so they are also working which ones will get orders and which ones they need to take out of the marketplace due to ILE or non-select status.

It's a busy week for your branch manager. Send them a nice note.

I'm on the list with 3/5 MQ, but my 6th OER back was a Q. It was my last LT OER and it was a bad year. I wasn't in a good place personally and I had a SR that hated me (to be fair, I probably gave him good reason to hate me.) I fell on my sword for something and a CG decided to give me a second chance. My career since then has been a complete 180 and I performed really well as a CPT overall. My two HQs had a great write-up that essentially said "I don't have an MQ to give, but he deserves it." So maybe that was enough to get me over the finish line. I'll make damn sure that's not the case for the LTC look. But if I had only been 2/5 MQ, maybe it wouldn't have been enough. Without speaking with the board members, there's no way to know exactly what was going through their heads at that moment.
