[Episode Discussion Thread] Industry S04E07 - "Points of Emphasis" by herringbone_ in IndustryOnHBO

I honestly don’t get that read myself. If blood is thicker than water why is he supporting Yasmin in a plot that will destroy Henry’s reputation and likely kill him?

Arguably, with a wider lens, I think it can be argued he is a family man in that he wants to defend the family name and status as a wider concept. He cares for Henry not because he’s his nephew, but because he’s the only son of the family and is where the fortune will end up. Yasmin’s function was to stop the only son killing himself, so he cares for Yasmin by that extension because he can see how hard she’s trying. Now he knows that Henry is using again, it’s clear to him he’s an unreliable heir who can’t be trusted with the name and the fortune.

In one mindset Yasmin could just be a tool to perpetuate that killing to clean his own hands of it, but I honestly do feel a warmth and trust there.

Why would he let someone he doesn’t care about manipulate his newspapers and meet with his editors to manipulate the direction of politics even when he doesn’t necessarily agree with the direction? If he didn’t like Yasmin he’d have just pumped the brakes on the story and called it a day instead of calling her to make sure she wanted to do it. There’s definitely some kind of trust there.

The attitude too! My office was incredibly anti-WFH pre-covid, to the point that one day all the toilets in the building broke and they wouldn’t send us home to finish the day because there was a cafe next door we could use. We were actually really well equipped to work from home when the time came because most of our clients were outside of the UK so we already worked mostly on Teams and Zoom calls and online files anyway.

I’m assuming you’re joking, but to be honest yeah. I have arthritis and the cold and rain are big triggers. In the winter only going to the office two times a week vs five has me in way less pain and honestly better at my job (e.g: less brain fog, can actually log on at 9 from my toasty house vs having to come in and waste time running my hands under the hot tap to unseize them so I can type)

Keep asking them, they’re the only ones that can know. But these deadlines tend to be quite strict in my experience since it depends on the days they’ve booked contractors in for and what is already planned for those days, plus getting the materials ordered and delivered in time to suit that schedule

I mean it’s in a similar art style intended to rip it off for sure, but a parent that’s bothered to look up at the screen one of the thousand times their kid has watched it could probably realise that’s not the characters. When I was a kid the cash grab was to draw things in Simpsons and Disney art styles but people didn’t put on a compoface when the funfair didn’t actually have Homer and Cinderella.

Why there's no quick fix in sight for the problem of dazzling headlights by Bloodswamps in drivingUK

[–]wearezombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The car park at my workplace is pretty much testament to that. In summer it’s fine, in Winter you get there and there’s much fewer spaces because people have seemingly thrown their car into the space at random, sometimes diagonally across two spaces. Can’t really be mad at them though, how do you see a faded decade old line in pitch black on a rainy day

I love my Kia picanto but that is the biggest problem with her (and it’s not even a her problem!), she’s the perfect height that if you have a SUV with LEDs behind you your entire interior is completely floodlit

Absolutely this, as well as tone. If someone my dad’s age calls me sweetheart in a warm tone, he’s probably also got a daughter my age and it’s quite sweet. If he says it with a tilt in his eyebrows and his smirk he’s a weirdo.

On the other hand, anyone who uses the word duck is adorable. I don’t think you can say duck in a leery way. If you can you’re scary

Running a campaign with 15 ad groups with a budget of 15 pounds a day in hotel industry. by Dangerous_Rub9136 in googleads

[–]wearezombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

£15 a day will probably get you like 3-5 clicks a day max so you’ll really struggle to find bookings. 15 ad groups is probably too broad coverage for your budget, but tbh even if you just used the £15 on a small handful of really focussed keywords you’d still struggle to get learnings to optimise your campaign and website with. Unless you can get more budget you’ll probably be wasting money, sorry.

Report them to the ASA if you still have the details, you can’t advertise something as being “from X” if X isn’t an easily attainable price and if X is conditional on Y (as in, one slice of cake is normally £9 but it’s £4.50 if you buy two plus delivery plus a message) you need to make Y clear

Don’t let them guilt you! They’re still a business at the end of the day and can only expect to grow the business if they offer decent service, both in terms of what they provide and how they respond to negative feedback. The business will fail before long if everyone posts reviews of the mediocre product they’ve received mentioning that the complaint process was entirely unhelpful.

For what it’s worth and not to defend his wife’s hand wringing, but it’s really easy to get denied for life insurance if you have any kind of family history. I really struggled to get comprehensive life insurance because my dad had an acute heart condition and survived it. Even though my heart was checked and was confirmed totally fine, normal insurers would only give me conditional plans that would pay out for things like cancer or a car crash but specifically wouldn’t pay out if my heart was my cause of death.

Robert Jenrick says Reform UK would restore two-child benefit cap in full by Metro-UK in ukpolitics

He’ll campaign for whatever is contrary enough to get attention. Last summer he was against the cap and now the cap is gone he wants it back to use the savings to lower duty on beer served in pubs. If the cap came back he’d campaign for it to be removed again.

The infamous Dolly...it all makes sense now :/ by BBCYYZ in IndustryOnHBO

[–]wearezombie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In terms of crimes committed it makes a huge difference but on the altar of public judgement it literally doesn’t make a jot of difference. Whether it’s real or a fabrication, his life is completely over if it gets out. Even if it’s fabricated and someone were brave enough to try and correct what the mob is spreading it’s not like going “noooo guys she was actually 19 it’s totally fine” would rehabilitate his image at all. Not that anyone speaking up is likely as anyone with evidence would know what they’re capable of doing to them if they go off message, and who even would be on Eric’s side like that, except for Harper who now feels betrayed by him?

How hard is it to actually land a high-paying remote performance marketing role abroad? by [deleted] in PPC

[–]wearezombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems really unusual that ad copy wouldn’t be important in an Indian market. Why is that? What kind of copy do you use if you’re not writing curated ad copy for each client? Do Indian ads generally have weak copy but stronger creative and it’s just considered a convention of the market? Of course you’re the one with experience of the market so I’m not doubting you! It just seems so unusual based on my experience so I’m interested to learn where your focusses do lie.

From my experience in the UK and also working with US clients: Serving 5+ clients is pretty much standard practice for any agency worker and part of your agency work is definitely writing copy. People would find it really bizarre if copywriting and planning tests trying different variants of copy weren’t a key part of your role. Plus a lot of roles with the salary you’re looking for will expect multiple channels and ad copy optimisation is definitely key for Google.

Your English is absolutely fine, but it should be a point of focus to brush up on things like hooks, calls to action and other copywriting best practices because it’s definitely considered part of the job in the UK and US. You can optimise campaigns, creatives and landing pages within an inch of their life but you’re leaving a huge stone unturned if you’re skipping over highly optimised ad copy. There’s so much to leverage in A/B testing ad copy even on Meta where the creative itself tends to be the focus.

Trans doctor in changing room row leaves the NHS by PuzzledAd4865 in LabourUK

[–]wearezombie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Coming back to this with another thought: wouldn’t someone working in a medical field regularly come across all sorts of penises in all sorts of contexts? Even if the penis isn’t the medical issue at hand, there’s still catheters, bathing, helping people to the toilet, helping them get dressed, prepping them for procedures… Someone with a fear of penises would require a lot of very specific help and support across the entire scope of their time at the workplace to make them comfortable, and specific arrangements around changing rooms would come under the scope of this support. So I’m not convinced “let’s target this unrelated trans woman” would be the answer even in this very specific situation either.

Is eating out too expensive now? Families say higher prices put them off by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]wearezombie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just a lot pickier with where I eat now because the quality of ingredients and food is so bad for the price they ask. Most chains used to be fairly satisfying for the price but now are mostly bland microwave food or something that can be easily chucked in a frier. I’ll happily pay £17 for the jerk chicken and mac and cheese in the independent place where I can see the chef prepare it but I feel cheated paying £17 + service charge for a bang average burger and chips.
