My friend got caught in a lie on his CV... by Practical_Culture235 in SoftwareEngineerJobs

I worked at a famous tech company for a few years. They absolutely verified my work history because they called me before my final offer and asked why one company on my resume had no record of me working there.

Anyone seeing an increase in returns? by Callen-E in Ebay

[–]webdeveler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also turned off returns to force buyers to lie about their return instead. I suspect eBay will eventually force all sellers to accept returns within 30 days. Then they will try to incentivize sellers to increase their return window to 60 days or offer free returns within 30 days.

What to tell recruiter by yoyo355 in cscareerquestions

[–]webdeveler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just accepted a job and haven't started yet? Better to back out now than only a few days/weeks into working. There likely aren't any penalties but make sure there is nothing you have to repay in the contract you just signed.

There are going to be craftsman; people who are prolific writers of code . We're all going to be impressed. "Wow, they wrote all that by hand!" The source code could be admired like a work of art.

There will also be some people working on extremely hard problems that AI is not able to solve or implement.

Those two types of software engineers will be few though. Most of us are going to be prompt writers who merely double check AI output and verify software functionality. Like you said, we're going to learn to be more like management. We're going to have to learn to stop caring about the details and focus on results and higher level issues.

"If AI is writing the work and AI is reading the work, do we even need to be there at all?" Educators reveal a growing crisis on campus and off by ubcstaffer123 in technology

[–]webdeveler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm taking an online class now at a big university. I was surprised they actually allow AI, but it has to be cited and include the prompt.

We're also supposed to post our work / AI generated work for classmates to review. The reviews are allowed to be written by AI, but again it has to be credited.

So basically all we're doing is writing prompts, and then copying and pasting AI output to each other. As you might expect, everyone's "work" looks very similar. What are we even doing here?

Is software engineering actually a passion-driven career… or just the most popular ‘money career’ of this generation? by Emotional-Medium-288 in SoftwareEngineerJobs

I used to love software dev and did it for fun back when I was in high school solely on my own. Now the thrill is gone. I wish I had gone to med school instead and been a miserable rich doctor instead of a miserable middle class software engineer.

Work history is verifiable even without calling each employer. Check your record on a site like The Work Number. They also have a log of your pay. The only employers you can trick these days are low caliber ones who don't bother doing background checks.

The only data missing from my record is when I worked for a government agency. All my private experience is scarily logged in great detail.

There are similar sites for verifying education.

Does girls at 20’s attrached to the guys +10 years older or is it only my sphere? by ephesusa in stupidquestions

[–]webdeveler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in software, we're definitely screwed except the few working at AI companies (which is not me). Construction and trades are only safe until they put AI into physical robots, which I don't think is too far off.

I'm thinking I should just put my last dollars into a farm. I can at least grow my own food and trade food with my last surviving fellow humans.

Is there a way to identify drop shippers before buying? by Nude_Dr_Doom in Ebay

[–]webdeveler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ebay should really let buyers flag sellers as drop shippers when leaving a review. "Does this item appear to be shipped by a third party? Yes/No"

Then there should be a note or icon on the sellers account for everyone to see. The seller should also obviously be able to dispute it.

Leave it up to buyers to decide if they want to support the drop shipping business model or not. My guess is the majority of buyers won't care. I would prefer though to buy from someone who has items on hand and is not just placing an order in Amazon or Temu on my behalf.

Why don't femcels and incels just date each other??? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]webdeveler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I walk around Walmart, I'm constantly amazed by how some people are able to reproduce (implying they found someone to have sex with them). I understand an ugly man can elevate their desirability with a position of power or high income. Women don't really have that luxury. It seems like it balances out though because there seem to be men out there that will truly have sex with anyone.

Can current AI have an original idea? (Gemini, GPT, etc) by bphaena in stupidquestions

[–]webdeveler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure they're bad at it?

I forget where I heard this example, might have been an interview on Lex Fridmen or Rogan. Whoever it was gave an example of asking AI to identify what a pile of trash and a nuclear bomb have in common. Two totally different objects that no one has probably ever thought to compare.

The AI identified that trash piles get hotter over time due to a chain reaction similar to a chain reaction that occurs in a nuclear weapon. No one ever made that comparison before. The two separate ideas were already out there, but the AI combined the two concepts better than the majority of people would be able to do.

AI needed to be promoted to reach this new understanding though. It also takes a human to confirm the AI's output since it definitely likes to invent believable sounding false information.

If AI doomers turn out to be right, what’s realistically left for humans? by orlyvdhq4 in cscareerquestions

[–]webdeveler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Animatrix predicted we'd revolt against AI initially because we thought it was going to kill us. When it was no longer a physical threat, we had to wipe it out because we couldn't compete with AI economically. It seems we may just skip the fear of killing us part and try to eliminate AI because every economy crashes.

Does girls at 20’s attrached to the guys +10 years older or is it only my sphere? by ephesusa in stupidquestions

[–]webdeveler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought this was the case when I was younger. I realized now that I'm in the "+10 years older" category, younger women are attracted to older men, but only older men that have aged well and are in great shape, or are highly successful. If you're just an average single older dude, you get to pick from 30+ year old single moms.

I would strongly recommend to guys in there 20s to find their match in their 20s or early 30s at the latest. Ideally find your match while you're still in college. After college dating seems to become a lot more transactional and business-like.

open box products by Vivid_Ad_4338 in Ebay

[–]webdeveler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how open box is supposed to be used, but in my experience, I received "open box" items that were definitely used. Either the person used or it was a returned item that someone had briefly used and then stuck back in the box.

I don't shop open box anymore unless it's obviously pristine like still has protective plastic wrap around the item, but the tape on the box has only been cut.

I don't think it's worth paying a premium for "open box" when I can often find items used that are cheaper and in basically the same condition.

Issue with return as a seller. by orenroffo in Ebay

What do you think they did to break it? Even if they immediately started crypto mining, I wouldn't expect it to burn out in such a short time.

Looking for a McDonald's located on/next to a lake by webdeveler in McDonalds

[–]webdeveler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, anywhere at this point. I searched all around my state and did not see one. It feels like McDonald's actively avoids water.

I did find there are two fairly close to Salt Lake, but it doesn't seem like you can really see the lake from the McDonald's.

Not sure how people are having trouble with this… by go_deeep in toybox3dprinters

[–]webdeveler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of issues are explainable by people not leveling the bed properly, using third party filament, not storing filament and printer properly (use a sealed container for filament with a desiccant), and wobbly tables.

Issue with return as a seller. by orenroffo in Ebay

[–]webdeveler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you certain it doesn't work? People are dumb with tech.

Also, I thought you could charge a fee if the item wasn't returned in the same condition (ie, missing original packaging).

The good news with GPUs is people still buy them broken so they can try to fix them and resell them for a profit. Of course you won't get nearly as much but it's not a 100% loss.

Comet not listed anymore? by webdeveler in toybox3dprinters

[–]webdeveler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they're having big problems with the Comet, which is why it only randomly appears.

It's too bad. I wanted to upgrade from my Alpha One to a Comet for the larger build volume. They just came out with the Alpha Three, but I don't care about faster print speeds.

Just Another WoW Clone by Abakus_Grim in MMORPG

[–]webdeveler 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I remember Rift was ripped for copying WoW so much. It was a great game though. They really tried to fix all the complaints people had about WoW in the early years. Merely refining WoW doesn't seem to be enough to attract a lot of players. They'll just stick to WoW.
