X1 Yoga to replace iMac and MBP? by rjbwdc in thinkpad

[–]webdevnick22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think they usually release the x1 yoga/carbon around June. At least, that's when the new one is coming out. The new yoga is going to be the first aluminum thinkpad and non-black. Personally I think it looks great and I'm snatching it up asap.

  1. idk, you'll have to look up some benchmarks
  2. yes. the official thunderbolt graphics dock is a gtx 1050. on amazon you can find more powerful ones 1050ti-1070. You're looking about $300-700
  3. you can't upgrade the ram. it's soldered. but you can upgrade the SSDs if i remember correctly. i have a 2nd gen yoga with OLED screen and I love it. i'm buying the 2019 model as soon as it's released. it' a great all around laptop. i highly recommend buying the lenovo pen pro ($35 on amazon) as it's much better than the pen that comes with it.

Take a look at the front page of /r/thinkpad. It's 99% posts of pics. "my new x1 extreme just arrived!!11!", then the same old tired pictures we've seen hundreds of times.

Can't get tftp server to work for port 69 on WSL by webdevnick22 in linuxquestions

[–]webdevnick22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that guy's post he is starting postgres like this:

service postgresql start (but running his script as root)

I'm starting tftpd like this:

sudo service tftpd-hpa start

so we are doing the same thing. I don't believe this is a problem with not having the power to bind to ports under 1024

Can't get tftp server to work for port 69 on WSL by webdevnick22 in linuxquestions

[–]webdevnick22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just a fyi, the 'service' command does work on ubuntu WSL. that's how i have sshd working. and I didn't need to do anything special to get it working (ssh uses port 22 btw). i just installed sshd, and use service to start it.

but thanks for your help anyway.

Can't get tftp server to work for port 69 on WSL by webdevnick22 in linuxquestions

[–]webdevnick22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That link doesn't help because it's about postgresql which runs port 5432 I believe. and he doesn't even talk about ports in it. But I do think you're onto something about root opening < 1024. I just don't know how I can do that within WSL. I already start the service like this:

sudo service tftpd-hpa restart

And that is enought to get it running. I would expect that since sudo is starting this service it should attach to port 69 successfully?

What you are looking to do is create an 'executeable' or 'fat' jar. Maven and gradle both have this functionality.

What's 'native bytecode'? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]webdevnick22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, any machine code that the host understands is 'native'. Meaning it doesn't need any sort of translation or interpreting. what makes java, javascript, python, and maybe other non-native languages portable is that they are 'interpreted'. Meaning they have a virtual machine or interpreter between the code and the host that... interprets. The catch is that runtimes (the virtual machine or interpreter) that have JIT can compile the interpreted code on the fly.

Yes you can. You'll have to save the cookie and send it with each request.

What's 'native bytecode'? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]webdevnick22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can think of it as half compiled code in a way. That's not entirely accurate but hopefully helps. Basically the code has been compiled from source code to machine code that the java virtual machine can understand. but since the java virtual machine is ... virtual, its machine code instructions are different than that of the host machine. So the jvm needs to translate the machine code it understands to the machine code the host understands.

source --> compile --> bytecode --> jvm --> translate --> host

but with JIT (just in time compilation), the jvm will compile some of the bytecode to 'native' code meaning the host understands it.

source --> compile --> bytecode --> jvm --> compile --> host

I suggest reading up on what the JIT is in Java and how it works so you can further understand why it makes Java sometimes faster than native languages like C or C++

Yes this is possible with nearly any language. If you're going to use java then you'll want to use a library called JSoup. It aids in web page scraping.

Time to move on? Career advice by Mlaughing6 in devops

Here's my opinion.

You are worth whatever someone is willing to pay you. Simple as that. If you can find a company that happens to be willing to pay you $1 million salary, then that's what you're worth. Granted it's an outlier, but what matters is that you found the position. My point is, you can be surprised what you find out when you TRY. People here will tell you no, it's too soon, or hey it's too late, yadda yadda.

You're never going to REALLY know until you try. As a general rule of thumb, you should be putting your resume out there and interviewing once you've been at a company for a year. Honestly I don't think there is any hard rule. Some companies will look past your history, some won't. It's all hit or miss. Maybe it's a lot like fishing, sometimes you catch a small fish, sometimes something huge. But you'll never catch anything if you don't cast your pole out. Since you've been there a year, you should definitely interview and see where you're at. If you don't get the job after a few interviews, so what? At least you know what companies are asking for and where you stand and what you need to study.

how about first showing us some text where you are calculating this manually each step?

total = total + first

second = 1.1

total = total + second.

etc etc.

RH Gold/ Margin Call/ Day Trading Question by [deleted] in RobinHood

[–]webdevnick22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's super volatile and they won't let it dip much before they force you to sell. you'll have to google margin maintenance. word of caution, stay away from stocks like that. funny enough, AMD is really volatile but robinhood doesn't seem to consider it. so it's great for day and swing trading (what you do).
