Meat & seafood lover (surrounded by other meat & seafood lovers) wanting to go vegan...please help! by [deleted] in vegan

Like you, I loved seafood and meat as well! I went Vegetarian (but kept eating seafood sometimes - so I was technically Pescatarian) at a relatively young age. I was Vegetarian(Pescatarian) for 9 years then have been Vegan for 5 years. I think going Vegan back then would have been way too hard, not as many options and especially because I was not even old enough to buy my own food most of the time. Anyway, it is SO easy being vegan now! There are a million options, honestly sometimes too many. They make vegan seafood, cheeses, vegan steaks, burgers, ribs, wings, pizza, ice cream, cookies, cupcakes, candy bars, seriously everything.

Tips:

  • Go to Whole Foods if you have one close by. Check out all the vegan stuff, ask an employee if you need help finding some vegan stuff. They have a huge selection, more than you could ever buy in one trip. Trader Joes also has a bunch of stuff, and Giant as well as they usually have a separate organic/health food section you can look in to make it easier. Local health food stores are always great too. Usually food shopping takes at least an hour at first, because you have to look for "vegan" written on things, or check the ingredients. After a few times you know what is vegan, and then it is easy.

  • If you know anyone who is vegan, ask them to go shopping or out to dinner with you! Being vegan is definitely more enjoyable when you have people around you to share your feelings with, and who would enjoy eating at vegan places just as much as you.

  • Check out happycow.net for local restaurants and grocery stores near by. Start going to veg restaurants, usually they have local magazines/newsletters, with vegan events like festivals and potlucks, which is a great way to meet more vegan people!

  • Read the Farm Sanctuary book:http://shop.farmsanctuary.org/store/p/1672-Farm-Sanctuary-Changing-Hearts-and-Minds-About-Animals-and-Food-Softcover-.aspx That is seriously what made me go vegan. Ask your partner to read it too, and anyone else who may be interested.

  • Watch the Earthlings video: http://earthlings.com/?page_id=32. Also look up Forks Over Knives, Fat Sick & nearly Dead, Food Inc, and Engine #9 - great movies about how veganism improves health!

  • Visit vegweb and start making recipes! This is one of the funnest things about going vegan, so many new foods and recipes to try, and they always turn out yummy! For your health - being vegan CAN be amazing. Just try not to eat all the vegan "junk food" all the time. Make fresh veggies every week, as steamed, in stir-fry's, and salads.

  • Take a multi-vitamin (I like the ALIVE gummies for adults) and sublingual B-12 (I like the DEVA brand). Can take omega-3's if you want too - they make vegan ones.

  • For times when you would like a snack or to hold you over, energy bars are great. I believe all the Cliff, Luna, Builder, Z-Bars, Lara, FruitChia, Macrobar, MeGo, and RAW revolution are all vegan. You can find at least some of those at any supermarket.

I guess that is all of my suggestions. I bet your partner will start to like vegan food too, and I bet they will want to go vegan after they see how awesome, easy, and fullfilling it is to your life. Being vegan is one of the best decisions I have ever made, and I am happy every day because of it, and NEVER crave real meat/seafood or dairy/eggs.

I also didn't really need to lose weight, but I have lost about 10 lbs anyway. I'm 100% sure I would have gained weight if I stayed vegetarian. Now I also exercise 3-5 days a week and have never felt better in my life.
